RESPeRATE: the role of paced breathing in hypertension treatment.

Despite a good adherence to lifestyle modifications and antihypertensive drugs, hypertension remains resistant in more than one-third of patients, thus creating the need for additional strategies, including non-pharmacologic approaches. Slow and deep breathing ("paced breathing") associated in the past with meditation has a direct antihypertensive effect by increasing baroreflex sensitivity. With the method of guiding the pace of breathing, a US Food and Drug Administration-certified device, RESPeRATE, may offer an easy, efficient, inexpensive, and noninvasive option for treating hypertension.

Biofeedback and relaxation-response training in the treatment of pediatric migraine.

To assess the efficacy of electromyographic biofeedback, relaxation-response training and pain behavior management as a treatment for pediatric migraine, we studied 18 children between the ages of eight and 12 years (mean = 10 X 1) in a prospective, randomized, controlled investigation. Six patients received all three treatment procedures, six received relaxation-response training and pain behavior management, and the remaining six constituted a waiting-list control group. All patients kept a record of their headaches for the 15-week study period and then for four weeks one year later. Followi

Challenges and pitfalls in anesthesia for electroconvulsive therapy.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) refers to the application of electricity to the patients' scalp to treat psychiatric disorders, most notably, treatment-resistant depression. It is a safe, effective, and evidence-based therapy that is performed with general anesthesia. Muscle relaxation is used to prevent injuries related to the tonic-clonic seizure caused by ECT. Hypnotics are administered to induce amnesia and unconsciousness, so that, patients do not experience the period of muscle relaxation, while the generalized seizure is left unnoticed. For the anesthesiologist, ECT is associated with t

Oxygen free radicals and the penis.

Penile erection is dependent upon vascular smooth muscle relaxation in erectile tissue and penile arteries, the principal mediator of relaxation being nitric oxide (NO). Evidence from basic scientific studies indicates that oxidative stress mediated through the superoxide radical (superoxide) and other reactive oxygen species (ROS) may be central to impaired cavernosal function in erectile dysfunction (ED). Increased inactivation of NO by superoxide results in impaired penile NO transmission and smooth muscle relaxation. Furthermore, propagation of endothelial dysfunction by ROS may result in

Multistrategic Approaches in the Treatment of Acute Migraine During Pregnancy: The Effectiveness of Physiotherapy, Exercise, and Relaxation Techniques.

Background and Objectives: Migraine is a common neurological condition that significantly impacts quality of life, especially in women during their reproductive years. Pregnancy poses unique challenges for migraine management due to hormonal changes and the limited use of pharmacological treatments. Non-pharmacological interventions, such as physiotherapy, exercise, and relaxation techniques, offer promising alternatives for managing migraines during this critical period. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of physiotherapy, structured exercise, and relaxation techniques in reducing

Five-year outcome of cognitive behavioral therapy and exposure with response prevention for bulimia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Few data exist examining the longer-term outcome of bulimia nervosa (BN) following treatment with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and exposure with response prevention (ERP). METHOD: One hundred and thirty-five women with purging BN received eight sessions of individual CBT and were then randomly assigned to either relaxation training (RELAX) or one of two ERP treatments, pre-binge (B-ERP) or pre-purge cues (P-ERP). Participants were assessed yearly following treatment and follow-up data were recorded. RESULTS: Eighty-one per cent of the total sample attended long-term follow-

[Stammering: a new approach to its treatment].

Conventional approaches to the treatment of stammering were judged ineffective in terms of both the percentage of patients cured and the relapses rate. Application of the new devices, e.g., biofeedback ones, combined with the conventional techniques only fairly improved the situation. A new combined technique is offered. It derives from a neurophysiological approach allowing one to destabilize the pathological speech pattern and create prerequisites for a quick learning (10 to 20 days) of the logopedical skills. The technique proved highly effective both in adults and in pre-school children. I

Complementary and alternative approaches to the treatment of tension-type headache.

While pharmacotherapy with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) and tricyclic antidepressants comprises the traditional treatment of tension-type headaches (TTH), the use of other therapeutic approaches in combination with medications can increase the success of treatment. Patients with comorbid mood disorders and frequent headaches may particularly benefit from some nonpharmacologic approaches. This review focuses on complementary and alternative approaches to tension-type headache treatment, including psychological therapies, acupuncture, and physical treatments. The current evidence in

Biofeedback-assisted relaxation in migraine headache: relationship to cerebral blood flow velocity in the middle cerebral artery.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if migraineurs with aura respond differently to biofeedback/relaxation than those without aura and, if so, whether the variability in outcome can be explained by blood flow velocity. Background.-The relationship between cerebral blood flow velocity and treatment response to biofeedback/relaxation in migraine with and without aura is uncertain. METHOD: Twenty migraineurs underwent 12 sessions of biofeedback/relaxation therapy, while 20 controls simply were told to relax on their own. Cerebral blood flow velocity was measured bilaterally in the middle cerebral artery wit…

[Music therapy effectiveness to decrease anxiety in mechanically ventilated patients].

The aim of this review is to find out whether or not music therapy is an effective nursing intervention to decrease anxiety and promote relaxation in ventilator-dependent patients. For the purpose of this review, relaxation has been considered as a reduction in state anxiety and physiologic signs (heart rate, blood pressure or respiratory rate). A comprehensive search has been conducted in electronic databases (Cochrane Library, Medline, CINHAL, Embase and PsycLit) in order to identify systematic reviews on music therapy effectiveness or randomised control trials that compare the effectiveness

Neuronal and smooth muscle receptors involved in the PACAP- and VIP-induced relaxations of the pig urinary bladder neck.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: As pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide 38 (PACAP 38)- and vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) are widely distributed in the urinary tract, the current study investigated the receptors and mechanisms involved in relaxations induced by these peptides in the pig bladder neck. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: Urothelium-denuded strips were suspended in organ baths for isometric force recordings and the relaxations to VIP and PACAP analogues were investigated. KEY RESULTS: VIP, PACAP 38, PACAP 27 and [Ala(11,22,28)]-VIP produced similar relaxations. Inhibition of neur

Psychological differences noted in aircrewmembers undergoing systematic desensitization and their subsequent functioning.

This study presents the results of a 3-year follow-up of patients treated for flight anxiety via relaxation/desensitization. Noted differences between successfully and unsuccessfully treated patients are discussed as well as the long-range effectiveness of relaxation/desensitization. Significant differences were noted on MMPI (Minnesota Multiphase Personality Inventory) scale elevations and major presenting symptoms. There was a significant relationship between specific MMPI profiles and failure to successfully treat flight anxiety. Individuals most likely to benefit from therapy were those su

Comparison of utilizing a hypertonic saline solution and mannitol to improve brain relaxation during craniotomy in patients with brain tumours: a prospective randomized controlled trial.

Hyperosmolar therapy, specifically the use of mannitol, has been employed to improve brain relaxation, but mannitol use may cause hypovolemia and electrolyte imbalance. Given these risks, hypertonic saline was introduced as an alternative; however, data on its efficacy and safety are limited. Researchers conducted a prospective, double-blind, randomized controlled trial. Sixty-six patients with supratentorial or posterior fossa brain tumours undergoing craniotomy were randomized into two groups. Group M received 20% mannitol at 3 ml/kg, and Group H received 3% hypertonic saline at the same dos

Left bundle branch block increases left ventricular diastolic pressure during tachycardia due to incomplete relaxation.

We investigated whether tachycardia in left bundle branch block (LBBB) decreases left ventricular (LV) diastolic distensibility and increases diastolic pressures due to incomplete relaxation, and if cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) modifies this response. Thirteen canines were studied at baseline heart rate (120 beats/min) and atrial paced tachycardia (180 beats/min) before and after induction of LBBB and during CRT. LV and left atrial pressures (LAP) were measured by micromanometers and dimensions by sonomicrometry. The time constant τ of exponential pressure decay and degree of incomp

Combined HRT-WB and mandala art therapy in university groups: A mixed-methods study.

First-year university students often experience increased psychological distress during adaptation. Guided by the Dual-Factor Model, this study evaluated a combined intervention of mandala art therapy and Hypnotic Relaxation Therapy for Well-Being (HRT-WB) in reducing negative symptoms and enhancing well-being. Twenty-eight students with low mental health scores were randomly assigned to an experimental group (8-week intervention) or a control group (routine counseling). Outcomes were measured using the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21), and post-i…

Evidence that a protein kinase A substrate, small heat-shock protein 20, modulates myometrial relaxation in human pregnancy.

For a successful human pregnancy, the phasic smooth muscle of the myometrium must remain quiescent until labor. Activation of cAMP/cAMP-dependent protein kinase A (PKA) pathways contributes to this quiescence. The small heat-shock protein 20 (HSP20) is a target of PKA, and phosphorylated HSP20 (pHSP20) modulates relaxation of tonic vascular smooth muscle via interaction with actin, independent of myosin dephosphorylation. Our objective was to determine whether relaxation in human myometrium is associated with changes in phosphorylation of HSP20. Myometrium was obtained at elective cesarean. El
