Partial pulpotomy and tooth reconstruction of a crown-fractured permanent incisor: a case report.

Pulp exposure due to traumatic injuries in the anterior permanent teeth of adolescents is a common occurrence. A vital permanent maxillary incisor with complex crown fracture and pulp exposure was treated by partial pulpotomy and assessed clinically through pulpal sensitivity tests and radiographically for periapical healing. Partial pulpotomy consisted of pulp tissue removal to a depth of only 1 to 2 mm, then capping the pulpal wound with calcium hydroxide, lining with resin-modified glass-ionomer cement, and restoration with resin composite. At each recall (7, 15, 21, 50, 90, 150, and 250 da

Effect of traumatic occlusion on periapical lesions in rats.

The effect of traumatic occlusion on periapical lesions in rats was investigated histologically and histometrically. Rats were divided equally into groups A to D. Rats in group A received no treatment; in group B, rats received pulpal exposure of the left mandibular first molar; in group C, a resin plate was cemented onto the occlusal surface of the corresponding maxillary molar; and in group D, the molar pulp was exposed and the resin plate was installed. At 1 and 2 wk, compression of the periodontal ligament and inflammation were less in group D than in group B. Lesions in the periapical per

Clinical Performance of Minimally Invasive Monolithic Ultratranslucent Zirconia Veneers: A Case Series up to Five Years of Follow-up.

There is a lack of reports in the literature on the long-term clinical performance of ultratranslucent zirconia, especially considering its use in manufacturing monolithic veneers. The purpose of this case series is to describe the aesthetic treatment steps of three patients with minimally invasive ultratranslucent zirconia veneers and to report the clinical findings up to five years. Three patients (woman: 2, man: 1; mean age: 30 years) unsatisfied with their dental aesthetics sought dental treatment. The treatment plan involved cementing ultratranslucent zirconia veneers. Air-abrasion was pe

Novel dental adhesive resin with crack self-healing, antimicrobial and remineralization properties.

OBJECTIVES: Secondary caries at the tooth-restoration margins is a primary reason for restoration failure. Cracks at the margins lead to leakage which can trap bacteria, producing acids to cause caries. To date, there has been no report on developing an adhesive resin that has self-healing, antibacterial and remineralizing capabilities. The objectives of this study were to: (1) develop the first self-healing adhesive with antimicrobial and remineralizing capabilities, and (2) investigate the effects of incorporating microcapsules, dimethylaminohexadecyl methacrylate (DMAHDM) and nanoparticles

Dental iatrogenesis, Part 2.

To substantiate biocompatibility of dental materials and techniques, and thereby reduce iatrogenesis, tests for pulp and dentinal responses have been developed. These have shown that high-speed tooth cutting techniques are superior to low-speed techniques even when both incorporate air-water coolant sprays; pressure when placing restorative materials intensifies pulp responses induced by the cutting procedure, and that chemically self-cured resin composites requiring the application of a matrix to enhance adaptation intensify pulp response as compared to visible light-cured equivalents applied

Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty: filler materials.

Over 700,000 osteoporotic compression fractures occur each year in the United States, twice the number of hip fractures. These vertebral fractures, most of which occur in the elderly, represent significant personal and societal burdens. Percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) is a minimally invasive method that involves the percutaneous injection of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) into a collapsed vertebral body to stabilize the vertebra. Kyphoplasty is an advanced minimally invasive technique with a number of potential advantages over PVP, including lower risk of cement extravasation and better resto

Prosthetic reconstruction of a fractured canine tooth in a dog using post and core.

A 6-year-old spayed female poodle dog weighing 5 kg was presented with a fractured right upper canine tooth (#104). Dental examination using an intraoral camera and radiography confirmed a tooth fracture with an exposed pulp, resulting in the loss of ~2/3 of the crown. Tooth #104 was diagnosed with a complicated crown fracture. Consequently, root canal therapy was undertaken, involving root canal preparation with hand files and subsequent canal filling with appropriate filling materials. After the root canal therapy was completed, part of the filling material was removed to facilitate post pla
