[Conditions for the manifestation of cyanide-resistant respiration in Pseudomonas aeruginosa].

Conditions for manifestation of cyanide-resistant respiration were studied in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Transition of the culture from the logarithmic to the stationary phase of growth, once the source of carbon (hexadecane, glucose, citrate, succinate) or nitrogen was exhausted, was accompanied with a decrease in the sensitivity of bacterial respiration to cyanide. As soon as the limiting factor was added, the culture started to grow again and its respiration became more sensitive to the inhibitor. Changes in the sensitivity of respiration to cyanide were observed when the bacterial growth was …

Localization of CO2 sensor related to the inhibition of the bullfrog respiration.

CO2 sensitivity in the airways and the general skin surface of the bullfrog under urethane anesthesia or without anesthesia was investigated … ed by the nasal mucosa and electrical stimulation of the proximal cut end of these nerves inhibited respiration. These findings suggested the existence of afferent reflex pathways from the nasal mucosa by these cranial nerves. Significance of this CO2-induced reflex was discussed.

[Functional assessment of respiration and blood circulation in pectus excavatum].

Functional investigation was carried out on respiration and cardiovascular system of 57 adolescents with pectus excavatum. Right cardiac catheterization was performed to 10 of them. Two thirds of the cases with right bundle branch block and 7 out of the tenth with catheterizatium were established to have elevated telediastolic pressure in right ventricle and diminished cardiac index, supplying grounds to the authors to presume a difficulty in the filling of the right ventricle resulting from the mechanic pressure due to the deformity. Respiratory deviations proved to be negligible. The indicat…

The effect of progressive hypoxia on respiration in the toad Bufo marinus.

1. As Bufo marinus became progressively hypoxic over a period of 90 min, there was a rise in arterial pH, presumably brought about by hyperventilation. The alkalosis gradually disappeared when oxygen levels became very low. It is suggested that this is the result of a respiratory or a metabolic pH adjustment, or both. 2. Hypoxic animals developed a characteristic breathing pattern in which discrete periods of lung ventilations alternated with buccal oscillations or respiratory pauses. 3. A pronounced bradycardia was associated with the concomitant decline of inspired and arterial PO2. 4. Altho

[Relation of the growth of Anabaena variabilis cyanophages to photosynthesis and respiration].

Cyanophages A-1 (L) and A-4C (L) grow within the cells of Anabaena variabilis under aerobic conditions in the dark in the presence of endogenous or exogenous (surcose) sources of energy. DNP inhibits the growth of cyanophages in the light and almost completely supresses it in the dark, o-phenanthroline entirely supresses the growth in both cases. DCMU has almost no effect on the yield of the virus in the light. Virus particles can apparently be synthesized at the account of the energy of both oxidative and cyclic photophosphorylation.

Role of peripheral and central chemoreceptors in the initiation of fetal respiration.

The relationship between fetal femoral arterial P02 and PC02 was evalulated in 13 fetal sheep with intact and denervated peripheral chemoreceptors. With intact chemoreceptors, a significant relationship was found between fetal Pa02 and PaC02 at the time of the first breath (Pa02 = 2.57 + 0.09 PaC02; r = 0.62, P less than 0.05)mfollowing bilateral carotid sinus nerve section (CSN) or total peripheral chemodenervation (TD), PaC02. Comparison of the intact, CSN, and TD blood gases at the time of the first breath demonstrated that a) severe hypoxemia stimulates fetal respiration even following tot…

Effect of experimental pneumococcal meningitis on respiration and circulation in the rabbit.

Pathophysiological studies in bacterial meningitis in man have been limited by clinical variability and the necessity for immediate therapy. After the development of a reliable animal model of pneumococcal meningitis, we studied respiration and circulation in 25 anesthetized New Zealand white rabbits during untreated pneumococcal meningitis and in 33 healthy controls. In meningitis, we found increased lactic acid in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Increased ventilation, perhaps due to CSF lactic acid accumulation, resulted in respiratory alkalosis; the concomitant lowering of Pco(2) acted as a home…

The action of trialkyltin compounds on mitochondrial respiration. The effect of pH.

1. Inhibition of 2,4-dinitrophenol-stimulated respiration by trialkyltins is dependent on the presence of Cl(-) in the assay medium and is only apparent at acid pH values. It appears to be a result of the Cl(-)-OH(-) exchange mediated by trialkyltins. 2. In a KCl medium at alkaline pH values, the maximum rate of respiration produced by uncouplers is further increased by the presence of trialkyltins. 3. The inhibition of uncoupled succinate oxidation at acid pH values is not reversed by increasing the external substrate concentration, suggesting that depletion of intramitochondrial succinate is…

Altered mitochondrial respiration in a chromosomal mutant of Neurospora crassa.

A mutant of Neurospora crassa (cni-1) has been isolated that has two pathways of mitochondrial respiration. One pathway is sensitive to cyanide and antimycin A, the other is sensitive only to salicyl hydroxamic acid. Respiration can proceed through either pathway and both pathways together in this mutant account for greater than 90% of all mitochondrial respiration. The cni-1 mutation segregates as a nuclear gene in crosses to other strains of Neurospora. Absorption spectra of isolated mitochondria from cni-1 show typical b- and c-type cytochromes but the absorption peaks corresponding to cyto…
