UV Inactivation of SARS-CoV-2 across the UVC Spectrum: KrCl* Excimer, Mercury-Vapor, and Light-Emitting-Diode (LED) Sources.

Effective disinfection technology to combat severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) can help reduce viral transmission during the ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic and in the future. UV devices emitting UVC irradiation (200 to 280 nm) have proven to be effective for virus disinfection, but limited information is available for SARS-CoV-2 due to the safety requirements of testing, which is limited to biosafety level 3 (BSL3) laboratories. In this study, inactivation of SARS-CoV-2 in thin-film buffered aqueous solution (pH 7.4) was determined across UVC irradiation wavelengths

Skull-base surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic: the Italian Skull Base Society recommendations.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), which causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), is highly contagious with devastating impacts for healthcare systems worldwide. Medical staff are at high risk of viral contamination and it is imperative to know what personal protective equipment (PPE) is appropriate for each situation. Furthermore, elective clinics and operations have been reduced in order to mobilize manpower to the acute specialties combating the outbreak; appropriate differentiation between patients who require immediate care and those who can receive telephone

Scientific assay methods as the basis for glove selection.

Allergies to latex proteins and glove chemicals are increasing in the clinical practice setting. Inasmuch as latex is ubiquitous in the health environment, individuals may be exposed to latex antigens by a number of different routes, including compromised skin, mucous membranes of the respiratory and urogenital tracts, and internally during surgery. As demonstrated by numerous research articles, the key factors that appear to play a role in acquired latex hypersensitivity are chemicals used in the manufacture of products; the level of residual latex proteins, and the presence of glove powder,

Clinical Manifestation, Evaluation, and Rehabilitative Strategy of Dysphagia Associated With COVID-19.

Dysphagia is the difficulty in swallowing because of the presence of certain diseases; it particularly compromises the oral and/or pharyngeal stages. In severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection, neuromuscular complications, prolonged bed rest, and endotracheal intubation target different levels of the swallowing network. Thus, critically ill patients are prone to dysphagia and aspiration pneumonia. In this review, we first discuss the possible cause and pathophysiology underlying dysphagia associated with coronavirus disease 2019, including cerebrovascular events, such as stro

Glucose control using an artificial pancreas in a severe COVID-19 patient on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation: a case report.

The usefulness and safety of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems in adult patients with severe coronavirus disease (COVID-19) have been reported. Using CGM might reduce the exposure patients and healthcare workers to COVID-19 and limit the use of personal protective equipment during the pandemic. CGM devices measure glucose in the subcutaneous interstitial fluid, but the accuracy of this technique has not been established in critically ill patients. The artificial pancreas, STG-55 (Nikkiso, Tokyo), is a closed-loop device that conducts continuous blood glucose monitoring using a periph

Aspiration after Anesthesia: Chemical versus Bacterial, Differential Diagnosis, Management, and Prevention.

Aspiration following anesthesia is a major patient issue and a difficulty for anesthesiologists. Aspiration syndromes are more common than anticipated, and the condition is frequently undetected. Clinical signs are often dictated by the characteristics of aspiration, such as the infectivity of the material, its volume, and the severity of the underlying clinical condition. Pulmonary aspiration can cause an acute or persistent inflammatory response in the lungs and upper airways that can be complicated by tracheobronchitis, aspiration pneumonia, aspiration pneumonitis, acute respiratory distres

Health hazards in drawing and painting.

Most health hazards in drawing and painting fall into two primary categories: volatile organic solvents used in many painting mediums and fixatives for dry drawing mediums; and respirable powders and dusts such as powdered pigments and dyes, which may be toxic and/or suspected or known carcinogens. User safeguards, such as appropriate ventilation and protective attire, and protection of the environment through careful emission and waste disposal, can be readily implemented with the education of artists and their employers. This chapter succinctly outlines the risk factors, symptomatology, and

Association of In-Ear Device Use With Communication Quality Among Individuals Wearing Personal Protective Equipment in a Simulated Operating Room.

IMPORTANCE: The COVID-19 pandemic has brought forth new challenges for health care workers, such as the daily use of personal protective equipment, including reusable facial respirators. Poor communication while wearing respirators may have fatal complications for patients, and no solution has been proposed to date. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether use of an in-ear communication device is associated with improved communication while wearing different personal protective equipment (N95 mask, half-face elastomeric respirator, and powered air-purifying respirator [PAPR]) in the operating room. Aerosol emission rates from breathing, speaking, and speaking with a surgical mask.

Transmission risk assessment of airborne diseases such as COVID-19 requires a detailed understanding of respiratory aerosol generation and emission during activities such as breathing and speaking, as well as the influence of protective devices such as surgical face masks. We measured integral aerosol emission rates from n = 44 participants during breathing, speaking, and speaking while wearing a surgical mask, with each condition performed for 20 min. All measurements were conducted in a closed 20 m3 cabin under standardized initial conditions in an operating theater environment. Particle emi

Preventing Respiratory Viral Illness Invisibly (PRiVII): protocol for a pragmatic cluster randomized trial evaluating far-UVC light devices in long-term care facilities to reduce infections.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory viral illness (RVI)-e.g., influenza, COVID-19-is a serious threat in long-term care (LTC) facilities. Standard infection control measures are suboptimal in LTC facilities because of residents' cognitive impairments, care needs, and susceptibility to loneliness and mental illness. Further, LTC residents living with high degrees of frailty who contract RVIs often develop the so-called atypical symptoms (e.g., delirium, worse mobility) instead of typical cough and fever, delaying infection diagnosis and treatment. Although far-UVC (222 nm) light devices have shown potent a

Extracorporeal life support in adult critically ill patients: mechanisms of benefit in respiratory and cardiac failure.

Extracorporeal life support provides temporary cardiorespiratory support for patients with severe, potentially reversible cardiac and/or respiratory failure refractory to conventional measures. Its application has broadened across a wide spectrum of critical illness, yet the mechanistic basis of its physiologic benefit remains incompletely defined. This review explores the mechanisms through which extracorporeal life support may confer benefit in respiratory and cardiac failure. These include restoration of gas exchange, optimization of circulatory dynamics, and mitigation of secondary organ i
