Possible mechanisms for horizontal gaze deviation and lateropulsion in the lateral medullary syndrome.

We report a patient who developed conjugate horizontal gaze deviation and ipsipulsion of saccades from a lateral medullary infarction. Recent evidence suggests that the gaze deviation may result from increased inhibition of the ipsilateral vestibular nucleus and ipsipulsion of saccades from decreased excitation of the contralateral ocular premotor areas of the brainstem reticular formation. Interruption of the olivocerebellar pathways may account for both of these ocular motor abnormalities.

Homeostatic mature dendritic cells instruct fibroblast specialization via Notch2 signaling to establish T cell niches.

Compartmentalization of secondary lymphoid organs is orchestrated by specialized fibroblastic reticular cells (FRCs), which guide immune cell migration, interaction, and function. Here, we investigated the pathways driving FRC differentiation into functionally distinct subsets. A Notch signaling signature distinguished lymph node (LN) FRCs, and deletion of Notch1 and Notch2 in FRCs restricted functional specialization, particularly for T-zone FRCs (T-zone reticular cells [TRCs]). Dendritic cell (DC)-specific deletion of the Notch ligand Jagged-1 prevented Ccl19hi TRC differentiation, with home

Fibroblastic reticular cells form reactive myeloid cell niches in human lymph nodes.

Lymph nodes play a key role in maintaining fluid balance in homeostatic and inflamed tissues and provide fibroblastic niche environments for optimal immune cell positioning and interaction. Here, we used single-cell and spatial transcriptomic analyses in combination with high-resolution imaging to molecularly define and functionally characterize niche-forming cells that control inflammation-driven remodeling in human lymph nodes. Fibroblastic reticular cells responded to inflammatory perturbation with activation and expansion of poised niche environments. Inflammation-induced adaptation of lym

Electrophysiological responses of cochlear root neurons.

Cochlear root neurons (CRNs) are second-order neurons interspersed among the fibers of the cochlear nerve in certain rodents. They project, … rties were consistent with the suggestion that CRNs provide the short-latency acoustic input to the reticular formation that leads to an ASR.

Morphological analysis of descending tracts in mouse spinal cord using tissue clearing, tissue expansion and tiling light sheet microscopy techniques.

Descending tracts carry motor signals from the brain to spinal cord. However, few previous studies show the full view of the long tracts fro … ucleus crossed the midline of spinal cord to the contralateral side; those arising in the medullary reticular formation ventral part gave many branches in both cervical and lumbar segments; the axons from superior colliculus terminated only at upper cervical but with abundant branches in the hindbrain. In utero brain lesions in SIDS.

Serial examination of the cerebral hemispheres of 20 sudden infant death syndrome victims revealed high incidence of leukomalacia (40%), leptomeningeal glioneuronal heterotopias (70%) at the base of the cerebrum, and astrogliosis (65%) in the white matter and medulla reticular formation compared with 20 age-matched controls. These results suggest that an antepartum insult may become an important predisposing risk factor in some patients for sudden infant death syndrome.

Macaque monkey trigeminal blink reflex circuits targeting orbicularis oculi motoneurons.

The trigeminal blink reflex plays an important role in protecting the corneal surface from damage and preserving visual function in an unpre … tly terminated on ipsilateral ObOc motoneurons. The observed pattern of labeling indicates that the reticular formation ventromedial to the principal and spinal nuclei also contributes extensive bilateral input to ObOc motoneurons. Thus, much of the trigeminal sensory complex is in a position to supply a monosynaptic drive for lid closure, and the adjacent reticular …

Suppression of the Swallowing Reflex during Rhythmic Jaw Movements Induced by Repetitive Electrical Stimulation of the Dorsomedial Part of the Central Amygdaloid Nucleus in Rats.

A previous study indicated that the swallowing reflex is inhibited during rhythmic jaw movements induced by electrical stimulation of the anterior cortical masticatory area. Rhythmic jaw movements were induced by electrical stimulation of the central amygdaloid nucleus (CeA). The swallowing central pattern generator is the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS) and the lateral reticular formation in the medulla. Morphological studies have reported that the CeA projects to the NTS and the lateral reticular formation. It is therefore likely that the CeA is related to the control of the swallowing r…

Microfibrils: a cornerstone of extracellular matrix and a key to understand Marfan syndrome.

The extracellular matrix is made of collagen, reticular, elastic and oxytalan fibers, amorphous ground substance and adhesive proteins playing a structural role, such as fibronectin; the basement membrane is a specialized matrix compartment which adheres to non-connective tissues and is continuous with the remaining matrix thanks to reticular fibers, anchoring fibrils, collagen VI filaments and oxytalan fibers. Microfibrils are constituents of elastic and oxytalan fibers that confer mechanical stability and limited elasticity to tissues, contribute to growth factor regulation, and play a role

Neurogenesis in the brain stem of the rabbit: an autoradiographic study.

With the aid of (H3)-thymidine autoradiography, neurogenesis was documented in the nuclear groups of the medulla oblongata, pons, and mid-brain, as well as in the brain stem reticular formation of the rabbit. Following single injections of (H3)-thymidine, counts were taken of intensely labeled neurons within the nuclei of the functional columns related to the cranial nerves, nuclei of several other functional classifications, and nuclei that did not fit into a functional category. In the brain stem as a whole, neurogenesis was found to occur between days 10.0 and 18.5 of gestation: however, th…

Role of the IL-33/ST2 Activation Pathway in the Development of the Hepatic Fibrosis Induced by Schistosoma mansoni Granulomas in Mice.

Schistosoma mansoni eggs retained in host tissues induce innate cytokine release, contributing to the induction of Type-2 immune responses and granuloma formation, important to restrain cytotoxic antigens, but leading to fibrosis. Interleukin(IL)-33 participates in experimental models of inflammation and chemically induced fibrosis, but its role in S. mansoni-induced fibrosis is still unknown. To explore the role of the IL-33/suppressor of the tumorigenicity 2 (ST2) pathway, serum and liver cytokine levels, liver histopathology, and collagen deposition were comparatively evaluated in S. manson

A genetically defined pontine nucleus essential for ingestion in mice.

The first phase of feeding consists in the procurement of solid foods from the environment by biting, and their preparation for swallowing by chewing. These actions require the precise coordination of tens of orofacial muscles for the jaw and tongue. The seat for this motor patterning is known to reside in the reticular formation, a complex and poorly mapped region of the hindbrain, but the neuron groups involved are still elusive. Here, we characterize a group of excitatory reticular interneurons located in the supratrigeminal area that express the homeodomain transcription factor Phox2b. Thi…

[Electroencephalographic analysis of the central action of halonal].

The experiments on rabbits revealed the depressant effect of anticonvulsant drug halonal on spontaneous bioelectrical activity and electroexcitability of the motor area of the cerebral cortex, caudate nucleus, intralaminar nuclei of the thalamus and midbrain reticular formation. The drug exerts no effect on the amygdala and hippocamp. The mechanism of the anticonvulsant effect of halonal involves inhibition of the caudo-thalamo-cortical synchronizing system that presumably disorders the occurrence of the hypersynchronous charge in the cortical neurons and prevents the development of a convulsi…

[Clinical picture and diagnosis of a myotonic syndrome in children resulting from birth injury].

The authors observed 68 ill children with pronounced muscular hypotonia (myotonia), who were thoroughly examined. The authors describe a group of cervical syndromes and present the symptomatology of myotonic manifestations. On the spondylograms, and with the help of REG and EMG, the signs typical for the natal damage of the cervical area of the spine and spinal cord were revealed. It is concluded that in most of the cases myotonia arises as a result of natally caused ischemia of the reticular formation of the brain stem.

Prosencephalic afferents to the mediodorsal thalamic nucleus.

The afferent projections from the prosencephalon to the mediodorsal thalamic nucleus (MD) were studied in the cat by use of the method of retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP). Cortical and subcortical prosencephalic structures project bilaterally to the MD. The cortical afferents originate mainly in the ipsilateral prefrontal cortex. The premotor, prelimbic, anterior limbic, and insular agranular cortical areas are also origins of consistent projections to the MD. The motor cortex, insular granular area, and some other cortical association areas may be the source of cortical co

Medullary visceral reflex circuits: local afferents to nucleus tractus solitarii synthesize catecholamines and project to thoracic spinal cord.

Visceral feedback circuits in lower brainstem were elucidated with retrograde tracers by mapping neurons that issue local projections to the … tariotegmental tract. Newly discovered afferents arise from circumscribed cell groups in the dorsal reticular formation and periventricular zone. Another source was traced to a paraambigual cell column in the apex of the rostral ventrolateral reticular nucleus (n.RVL). In study 2, catecholaminergic afferents were initially defined with combined retrograde transport-i …

Regulation of cerebello-cortical transmission in the rat ventromedial thalamic nucleus.

On the basis of antidromic stimulation we have identified two distinct neuronal populations in the rat ventromedial thalamic nucleus. The largest population (96%) are thalamo-cortical relay cells which project via the internal capsule to the cerebral cortex. The smaller population of cells (4%) project caudally to the reticular formation and superior colliculus. These two cell types could be distinguished further on the basis of their patterns of spontaneous discharge. Relay cells fluctuate between two activity patterns (i) a rhythmic pattern characterized by periods of high-frequency bursting…

Excitotoxic lesions of the nucleus paragigantocellularis facilitate male sexual behavior but attenuate female sexual behavior in rats.

Little is known regarding the descending inhibitory control of genital reflexes such as ejaculation and vaginal contractions. The brainstem nucleus paragigantocellularis (nPGi) projects bilaterally to the lumbosacral motoneuron pools that innervate the genital musculature of both male and female rats. Electrolytic nPGi lesions facilitate ejaculation in males, leading to the hypothesis that the nPGi is the source of descending inhibition to genital reflexes. However, the function of the nPGi in female sexual behavior remains to be elucidated. To this end, male and female rats received bilateral
