Evidence suggests that neutrophils are important in host defenses against invasive aspergillosis and mucormycosis, although hyphae in these lesions are too large to be phagocytized. Rhizopus oryzae was the causative organism in a fatal case of rhinocerebral and then pulmonary mucormycosis in a patient cured of her underlying leukaemia by bone marrow transplantation. We discuss the risk factors involved and the need for maintaining a high index of suspicion of fungal infection in the late post-transplant period.

Zygomycosis is an aggressive infection by an angioinvasive fungus seen in patients with defects in phagocytosis. We describe a neutropenic child with primary cutaneous Rhizopus infection presenting with a bull's-eye appearance. The patient was treated with aggressive surgical debridement along with amphotericin B followed by skin grafting, with full recovery.

A patient with pulmonary mucormycosis caused by Rhizopus oryzae was treated with a total dose of intravenous amphotericin B 2060 mg which resulted in medical cure. This is the first reported medical cure in the RSA of pulmonary mucormycosis. Mucormycosis with brachial plexus involvement and Horner's syndrome has not been previously reported.

The Zygomyces are an increasingly frequent cause of invasive mold infection in immunocompromised patients. Here we describe the first well-documented case of Rhizopus infection of odontogenic origin, which presented as a rapidly progressive soft tissue infection in a neutropenic child. The infection resolved with limited surgical debridement and antifungal therapy.

Mediastinal mucormycosis is an uncommon but lethal infection associated with an 83% mortality. We describe a case of fatal Rhizopus microsporus mediastinitis despite three exploratory mediastinal surgeries and complementary systemic and mediastinal irrigation with liposomal amphotericin B. We report a case of neonatal infection with rhizopus, one of the Mucoraceae family. Human infection is rare but the mortality is high without prompt, correct treatment. The infant had a simultaneous candida septicaemia secondary to colonisation of a central venous line. Serial C reactive protein estimations are valuable in monitoring treatment.
