Evolution of vocal patterns: tuning hindbrain circuits during species divergence.

The neural circuits underlying divergent courtship behaviors of closely related species provide a framework for insight into the evolution of motor patterns. In frogs, male advertisement calls serve as unique species identifiers and females prefer conspecific to heterospecific calls. Advertisement calls of three relatively recently (∼8.5 Mya) diverged species - Xenopus laevis, X. petersii and X. victorianus - include rapid trains of sound pulses (fast trills). We show that while fast trills are similar in pulse rate (∼60 pulses s-1) across the three species, they differ in call duration and pe

Does central sleep apnea occur in children with syndromic craniosynostosis?

AIM: To evaluate the prevalence and cause of central sleep apnea (CSA) and central sleep apnea syndrome (CAS) in patients with syndromic craniosynostosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective study included ambulant sleep study data to assess, central apneas and obstructive apneas. Data on hindbrain herniation were obtained using cerebral magnetic resonance imaging. RESULTS: One-hundred and thirty-eight syndromic craniosynostosis patients with a median (range) age of 7.8 (1.0-18.0) were included. Central apneas decreased significantly with increasing age (R=-0.25, p=0.003). An increased c

Androgen receptors in cranial nerve motor nuclei of male and female rats.

This study compared AR proteins in four cranial nerve motor nuclei among male and female rats that were intact, gonadectomized, or gonadectomized and given TP by immunohistochemistry. AR-immunoreactive (ir) neurons were found, in descending order of abundance, in the nucleus ambiguus, hypoglossal nucleus, and the facial and trigeminal motor nuclei of both males and females of intact and gonadectomized plus TP rats. Virtually every neuron of the nucleus ambiguus was AR-ir. In contrast, AR-ir neurons were either restricted to a specific area of the hypoglossal nucleus, or randomly distributed in

Epithelial involution and basement membrane loss during early rhombencephalic tectoria lamina development.

Extracellular material molecules play a key role in the regulation of morphogenesis and differentiation of a large number of organs including the central nervous system. However, the role of the neural basement membrane in the growth of different parts of the neural tube has yet to been delineated. Here, the structural and compositional modifications of the basement membrane (BM) of rhombencephalic tectoria lamina anlage (RTLA) have been examined during the process of RTLA epithelial attenuation. Between stages 10 to 11-the presumptive RTLA epithelium showed a structure, thickness and cell-pro

Programmed cell death and the morphogenesis of the hindbrain roof plate in the chick embryo.

The spatial and temporal distribution of apoptosis in the dorsal midline of the developing chick hindbrain was examined in relation to the development of the neuroepithelium and neural crest using scanning and transmission electron microscopy, immunocytochemistry and in situ hybridization. The pattern of TUNEL labeling and Slug expression in the dorsal midline at stages 10 and 11 differed from that at stages 12-15. At stages 10 and 11, TUNEL labeling and Slug expression were observed in the dorsal part of location II of rhombomere 1/2 (i.e., between the surface ectoderm and the neuroepithelium

Somatosensory evoked potentials to median nerve stimulation in meningomyelocele: what is occurring in the hindbrain and its connections during growth?

Twenty patients with meningomyelocele (MMC) and shunted hydrocephalus, ranging in age from 3 to 23 years old, underwent serial recording of short-latency somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) to median nerve stimulation, on the basis of which to assess the evolution of dysfunction in the brainstem and its connections (cervical spinal cord, cervical nerve roots, lower cranial nerves). Eighteen patients had Chiari type II malformations, none of which was symptomatic. In all 20 patients, serial SEP recordings were obtained repeatedly after periods ranging from 2 to 7 years. The results were as f

Presence of S-100 beta in cholinergic neurones of the rat hindbrain.

The double staining of S-100 beta and choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) revealed that S-100 beta immunoreactivity was localized in most, but not in all, cholinergic neurones in the somatomotor nuclei of the cranial nerves and in the ambiguus nucleus. S-100 beta was present in almost all cholinergic neurones in the brain stem reticular, red, vestibular (excluding medial), mesencephalic trigeminal and cerebellar nuclei. However, S-100 beta immunoreactivity was lacking in cholinergic neurones in the parabrachial complex, the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagal nerve and most sensory nuclei. No S-100

Multiple developmental defects in Engrailed-1 mutant mice: an early mid-hindbrain deletion and patterning defects in forelimbs and sternum.

During mouse development, the homeobox-containing gene En-1 is specifically expressed across the mid-hindbrain junction, the ventral ectoderm of the limb buds, and in regions of the hindbrain, spinal cord, somites and somite-derived tissues. To address the function of En-1 during embryogenesis, we have generated mice homozygous for a targeted deletion of the En-1 homeobox. En-1 mutant mice died shortly after birth and exhibited multiple developmental defects. In the brains of newborn mutants, most of the colliculi and cerebellum were missing and the third and fourth cranial nerves were absent.

The morphogenesis of hindbrain crowding associated with lumbosacral myeloschisis.

The teratogenicity of ethylenethiourea (ETU) was investigated in Sprague-Dawley rats and Landrace pigs. Pregnant rats each received a single intragastric dose of ETU on a given day from day 8 to day 19 of gestation, and pregnant pigs were given a single dose of ETU from day 15 to day 19. Control animals received an ETU-free vehicle. The newborn pigs were all normal, whereas there were high incidences of specific types of congenital malformation of the central nervous and other systems in the rats. A high incidence of lumbosacral myeloschisis associated with hindbrain crowding was observed in r

Central Neurocircuits Regulating Food Intake in Response to Gut Inputs-Preclinical Evidence.

The regulation of energy balance requires the complex integration of homeostatic and hedonic pathways, but sensory inputs from the gastrointestinal (GI) tract are increasingly recognized as playing critical roles. The stomach and small intestine relay sensory information to the central nervous system (CNS) via the sensory afferent vagus nerve. This vast volume of complex sensory information is received by neurons of the nucleus of the tractus solitarius (NTS) and is integrated with responses to circulating factors as well as descending inputs from the brainstem, midbrain, and forebrain nuclei

Ear transplantations reveal conservation of inner ear afferent pathfinding cues.

Vertebrate inner ear neurons project into the correct brainstem nuclei region before target neurons become postmitotic, or even in their absence. Moreover, afferents from transplanted ears in frogs have been shown to navigate to vestibular nuclei, suggesting that ear afferents use molecular cues to find their target. We performed heterochronic, xenoplastic, and heterotopic transplantations in chickens to investigate whether inner ear afferents are guided by conserved guidance molecules. We show that inner ear afferents can navigate to the vestibular nuclei following a delay in afferent entry a

An unusual presentation of Listeria monocytogenes rhombencephalitis.

We describe a case of 52-year-old woman with a medical history of Crohn's disease presented abrupt fever, asymmetrical multiple cranial nerve palsies and focal neurological symptoms localized to the brainstem. The patient was initially diagnosed with ischaemic stroke, because of acute clinical course and results of neuroimaging. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis revealed mild infection with negative Gram staining and culture. Final diagnosis of Listeria monocytogenes brainstem infection (rhombencephalitis) was set up on the basis of further clinical course and positive blood cultures. Listerial rho

Hindbrain GLP-1 receptor mediation of cisplatin-induced anorexia and nausea.

While chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting are clinically controlled in the acute (<24 h) phase following treatment, the anorexia, nausea, fatigue, and other illness-type behaviors during the delayed phase (>24 h) of chemotherapy are largely uncontrolled. As the hindbrain glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) system contributes to energy balance and mediates aversive and stressful stimuli, here we examine the hypothesis that hindbrain GLP-1 signaling mediates aspects of chemotherapy-induced nausea and reductions in feeding behavior in rats. Specifically, hindbrain GLP-1 receptor (GLP-1R) blockad

Involvement of hindbrain and peripheral prostanoids in gastric motor and cardiovascular responses to delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol in the rat.

We previously reported that delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-9-THC), the primary psychoactive constituent of Cannabis sativa, inhibited gastric motor activity and evoked bradycardia and hypotension upon its parenteral administration in the rat. As prostanoids are important mediators of the actions of cannabinoids, we hypothesized that the inhibitory gastric motor and cardiovascular effects of delta-9-THC could depend on cyclooxygenase (COX) activation in the hindbrain and/or in the periphery. To test this hypothesis, vehicle or delta-9-THC (0.2 mg/kg, i.v.) were administered before and 15-m

Reactivity to visual signals and the cerebellar vermis: Evidence from a rare case with rhombencephalosynapsis.

The modulatory role of the cerebellum was investigated in a case with rhombencephalosynapsis (RS), a rare dysplasia characterized by the absence of the cerebellar vermis. The visual psychophysical task involved localizing a target and ignoring a distractor appearing either before, at the same time as, or after the target. It allowed us to assess reactivity to warning signals, distraction, and reactivity to signals appearing during attentive processing. Compared with a control sample, the patient exhibited greater reactivity to warning signals and difficulties interrupting attentive processing,

Effects of electrical stimulation of the raphe area on the micturition reflex in cats.

The raphe nucleus has a variety of physiological functions, including emotion, regulation of skeletal muscle motoneurons, spinal transmission of nociceptive signals, sleep, respiration, gastric motility, and cardiovascular function. Recent evidence has shown that centrally administered serotonin has modulatory effects on micturition function, and that decreased brain serotonin might underlie depression and an overactive bladder. We applied high-frequency stimulation (HFS; 0.2-ms duration, 100 Hz) in the raphe nucleus and the adjacent midline area in 20 supracollicular decerebrate cats, which m

Localization of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) immunoreactivity in the brain of a caecilian amphibian, Dermophis mexicanus (Amphibia: Gymnophiona).

The organization of the cholinergic system in the brain of anuran and urodele amphibians was recently studied, and significant differences were noted between both amphibian orders. However, comparable data are not available for the third order of amphibians, the limbless gymnophionans (caecilians). To further assess general and derived features of the cholinergic system in amphibians, we have investigated the distribution of choline acetyltransferase immunoreactive (ChAT-ir) cell bodies and fibers in the brain of the gymnophionan Dermophis mexicanus. This distribution showed particular feature
