An aneurysmal bone cyst was identified in the rib of a 3 1/2-year-old domestic shorthair cat. Surgical excision of the cyst, with reconstruction of the thoracic wall, was performed. Though aneurysmal bone cyst is a benign neoplastic condition that may be associated with locally aggressive growth, it does not metastasize. The condition is rare in any species other than human beings, but has been reported in cats, dogs, and horses.

There are differing opinions in the literature regarding the significance of first rib fractures. The plan at Westmead Centre is to standardize the initial assessment of patients with such fractures. A 3 year retrospective study of 170 trauma victims who sustained fractured ribs, was undertaken. Of the 15 patients with first rib fracture, all were involved in motor vehicle accidents. Over two-thirds of these patients sustained major chest injuries. Multisystem trauma involving cranial, abdominal or skeletal injury was common. One patient died as a result of head injury. Similar results were ob…

Pectus excavatum is generally regarded as a cosmetic deformity; however, some children with pectus excavatum complain of chest pain and exercise limitation. Physiologic studies sometimes show mild restrictive changes and suggest an increased oxygen cost of breathing. Limitation of rib cage mobility related to the deformity may explain these findings. If rib cage mobility is limited, the ability of the actively inspiring rib cage to lower abdominal pressure would be decreased. If this were so, increased swings in abdominal pressure would be seen during the respiratory cycle, especially at times

The diagnosis of skeletal tuberculosis in human remains has traditionally been based upon the detection of secondary skeletal lesions which … , 39 (56%) were found to display a specific set of lesions restricted to the internal aspect of the ribs. These lesions take one of two forms: (1) diffuse periostitis or (2) localized abscess, and appear to correspond to areas of chronic pulmonary infection. The diffuse type of rib lesion is more commonly observed than the localized type. In our observ …

As discussed by Urschel [13], 50 to 70 percent of patients with symptoms of thoracic outlet syndrome may be treated conservatively by nonsurgical methods. Patients who still have symptoms after years of such therapy are referred to us for surgical treatment. Failure to obtain symptomatic relief after scalenotomy alone [8] caused us to abandon this treatment. The advantages of the subclavicular approach to first rib resection are as follows: (1) The operation is easy and fast. (2) There is good visibility in the operative field. (3) The neurovascular bundle to the arm lies cephalad and out of h
