Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that negatively impacts patients' quality of life. We sought to review important aspects of the pathogenesis of rosacea and the role of new treatment options in its management. New, emerging treatments show promise; however, quality randomized controlled trials for many of these drugs are lacking. Brimonidine tartrate is an effective newly approved treatment for erythematotelangiectatic rosacea. Topical oxymetazoline has potential for the treatment of erythematotelangiectatic rosacea, with efficacy described in case reports and randomized contro…

PURPOSE: To report the clinical course of 2 pediatric ocular rosacea cases with a significant delay until diagnosis.
METHODS: We report 2 interventional case reports. Case 1 is a 10-year-old boy with 2 years of recurrent bilateral blepharitis, repetition chalazion, conjunctival hyperemia, and corneal ulcers, without response to topical antibiotics or topical and systemic steroids. Case 2 is a 9-year-old girl with keratoconjunctivitis and repetition chalazion since she was 2 years old, without improvement after consulting several ophthalmologists and performing several treatments throughout th…

BACKGROUND: Rosacea is a chronic condition affecting the facial and ocular surface tissues. It is historically underdiagnosed and affects people of all ethnicities. The exact pathophysiology of rosacea is poorly understood. A variety of medical therapies are available to treat the various signs and symptoms of rosacea. Currently, there is no cure for the condition.
METHODS: This report is a literature review.
RESULTS: The clinical manifestations of rosacea are diverse, with periods of exacerbation and remission. Many short- and long-term treatments are available to alleviate the symptoms and…

The epidemiological data on rosacea remain fragmentary and the methodological quality debatable. Rosacea affects mainly adults around the age of 30 years and classically predominates in females. Recent Estonian and Irish studies suggest that the female predominance may not be as high as previously believed. However, prevalence does increase with age. The prevalence statistics published in Europe and the United States are highly variable, ranging from less than 1% to more than 20% of the adult population; actually, the methods used and the populations studied vary greatly from one study to anot…

Rosacea is like no other disease a problem for patients regarding the use of skin care and cleaning products. The subjective assessment of the severity of the illness is an important factor regarding the development of depression in these patients. Inadequate skin care and cleaning products can lead to irritation and stinging of the skin. Dermatologists should address questions regarding skin care, cleaning and sun screens. Because of the higher irritability of the skin of rosacea patients, all possibly irritating cleaning products or procedures should be avoided. The water temperature is also…

Many options exist for the treatment of rosacea, including topical and systemic therapies, laser and light-based therapies, and surgical procedures. A classification system for rosacea identifies 4 subtypes (i.e., erythematotelangiectatic, papulopustular, phymatous, and ocular), which may help guide therapeutic decision-making. The goals of therapy include reduction of papules, pustules, erythema, physical discomfort, and an improvement in quality of life. Standard topical treatment agents include metronidazole, azelaic acid, and sodium sulfacetamide-sulfur. Second line therapies include benzo…

Rosacea is a common chronic, and sometimes progressive, dermatosis. It is characterized, alone or in combination, by central facial erythema, symmetric flushing, stinging sensation, inflammatory lesions (papules and pustules), telangiectasias, and phymatous changes (tissue hyperplasia and nodules). Rosacea can occur in adults of any ethnicity, and adversely affects patients' quality of life. The condition can be effectively controlled with therapy tailored to the specific subtype of rosacea that is affecting the patient. Topical metronidazole, sulfacetamide/sulfur, and azelaic acid are generally…

Rosacea is a very common skin disorder in the clinical practice that primarily affects the convex areas of the face. Extrafacial rosacea lesions have occasionally been described, but extensive involvement is exceptional. In the absence of its typical clinical or histological features, the diagnosis of extrafacial rosacea may be problematic. We describe an unusual case of rosacea with very exuberant extrafacial lesions, when compared with the limited involvement of the face.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about how individuals with a predisposition for rosacea appear in childhood. This retrospective, matched control, longitudinal study examined the relationship between childhood stye and adult rosacea.
METHODS: The records of the Rochester Epidemiology Project were examined to identify patients who received care for stye or blepharitis between ages 2 and 17 years, and received care for any cause at age 40 years or older. Patients were matched by group to control subjects (1:2).
RESULTS: Patients with stye during childhood (N = 201) had a higher prevalence of adult …

Acne rosacea is one of the most common diagnoses seen in the clinical dermatologic practice. The classic presentation of rosacea, acneiform papules, and pustules on a background of telangiectasia, is often easily identified by primary care physicians, patients, or their similarly afflicted friends or family members. However, rosacea actually represents a spectrum of disease from chronic skin hypersensitivity and flushing to rhinophyma. Although the pathogenesis of rosacea remains unknown, it is important to understand its various presentations and possible etiologies prior to developing indivi…

BACKGROUND: Rosacea is a common chronic skin and ocular condition. It is unclear which treatments are most effective. We have conducted a Cochrane review of rosacea therapies. This article is a distillation of that work.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to assess the evidence for the efficacy and safety of rosacea therapies.
METHODS: Multiple databases were systematically searched. Randomized controlled trials in people with moderate to severe rosacea were included. Study selection, assessment of methodologic quality, data extraction, and analysis were carried out by two independent researchers.
RESULT…

PURPOSE: To report a case of dendritic keratopathy secondary to ocular rosacea in a 62-year-old man.
METHOD: Case report.
RESULTS: We discuss the ophthalmologic findings, management, and course in a patient with an unusual dendritic corneal lesion resistant to medical therapy. Other causes of dendritic lesions on the cornea were ruled out after investigation. The patient experienced symptomatic and objective improvement in the lesion with treatment of ocular rosacea.
CONCLUSION: This case represents an interesting presentation of rosacea with dendritic keratopathy associated with typical sk…

BACKGROUND: Rosacea is a common chronic dermatosis that involves the cutaneous microvasculature of the face. There are no objective measures for assessing the severity of erythematotelangiectatic rosacea.
OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to characterize and provide objective measures of vessel changes in erythematotelangiectatic rosacea by videocapillaroscopy.
METHODS: We compared 30 patients with erythematotelangiectatic rosacea with 30 age- and sex-matched patients with facial seborrheic dermatitis and 30 healthy control subjects. Videocapillaroscopy was performed both on the cheeks and on the n…
