Prevalence and genetic diversity of viral gastroenteritis viruses in children younger than 5 years of age in Guatemala, 2014-2015.

BACKGROUND: Acute diarrhea is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in children and is associated with approximately 500,000 deaths/year globally. Rotavirus and norovirus are leading causes of acute diarrhea accounting for more than half of this burden. OBJECTIVE/STUDY DESIGN: To determine the prevalence and genotype distribution of acute diarrhea caused by rotavirus, norovirus, sapovirus and astrovirus among children <5 years of age at two departments in Guatemala from January 2014 to December 2015, we tested 471 stool specimens (202 samples from hospitalized children and 269 samples

Etiological epidemiology of viral diarrhea on the basis of sentinel surveillance in children younger than 5 years in Gansu, northwest China, 2009-2013.

To explore the etiological spectrum of diarrhea and its epidemiological characteristics in diarrhea symptoms surveillance cases younger than 5 years from 2009 to 2013 in Gansu province, northwest China. Systematic diarrhea symptoms surveillance were conducted in 27 sentinel sites in Gansu province and outpatients with three or more loose, watery, or sticky pus stools per day were defined as surveillance cases. All stool specimens were tested for Rotavirus, Human calicivirus, Adenovirus, and Astrovirus. Totally, 1,119 cases (51.54%) were identified as any enteric virus. The average isolation ra

A human vaccine strain of lamb rotavirus (Chinese) NSP4 gene: complete nucleotide sequence and phylogenetic analyses.

A lamb strain of rotavirus has recently been licensed for use in China as a live vaccine to prevent rotavirus diarrhea in children. As rotavirus NSP4, especially the cytotoxic domain alone is considered to be associated with diarrhea, we sequenced gene segment 10, which encodes NSP4, of lamb rotavirus. Comparative analyses was performed to identify differences from human rotavirus strains, that might be associated with attenuation, and to ascertain whether the lamb rotavirus gene fits among the NSP4 of other sequenced rotavirus strains. Our comparative nucleotide sequence analysis suggests its

Immune response to rotavirus vaccines in low- and middle-income countries: Challenges and perspectives.

Rotavirus is a highly contagious pathogen and a leading cause of severe diarrhea cases in children under 5 y of age worldwide. Although effective oral rotavirus vaccines have been developed and implemented globally, their performance varies substantially by setting. In high-income countries (HICs), these oral vaccines exhibit 85-90% efficacy in preventing rotavirus-associated hospitalizations, with protection lasting until at least 2 y of age. In contrast, vaccine efficacy in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is considerably lower, ranging from approximately 45% to 65%. To address this

Associations of Intussusception With Adenovirus, Rotavirus, and Other Pathogens: A Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Intussusception is the leading cause of acute intestinal obstruction in infants. Intussusception is mostly idiopathic, but infectious pathogens are sometimes implicated. In addition, live oral rotavirus vaccines have been associated with intussusception. METHODS: We searched the literature published between January 1, 1990, and March 16, 2020, to describe the association between intussusception among infants and young children and various pathogens, particularly adenovirus and wild rotavirus. We tallied the number of evaluations reporting a statistically significant positive assoc

Silencing of the rotavirus NSP4 protein decreases the incidence of biliary atresia in murine model.

Biliary atresia is a common disease in neonates which causes obstructive jaundice and progressive hepatic fibrosis. Our previous studies indicate that rotavirus infection is an initiator in the pathogenesis of experimental biliary atresia (BA) through the induction of increased nuclear factor-kappaB and abnormal activation of the osteopontin inflammation pathway. In the setting of rotavirus infection, rotavirus nonstructural protein 4 (NSP4) serves as an important immunogen, viral protein 7 (VP7) is necessary in rotavirus maturity and viral protein 4 (VP4) is a virulence determiner. The purpos

Serum and cerebrospinal fluid nitrite/nitrate levels in patients with rotavirus gastroenteritis induced convulsion.

Nitric oxide (NO) is a highly reactive free radical that is involved in a variety of different biological process. In recent reports, the putative role of NO in the neuropathogenesis of brain inflammation has been demonstrated. And then the relation between neuronal NO and convulsive seizures induced by virus has been suggested. However, there are few reports about NO in vivo under viral neurological infections. In order to evaluate the relation between NO production and neurological disorders induced by viral infection, sixty-six cases including 11 patients with rotavirus gastroenteritis admi

Evaluation of Systemic Injury in Calves with Rotavirus-Induced Diarrhea Using Sensitive Biomarkers and Immunopathology.

Studies in human medicine have demonstrated that rotavirus infection can also affect extraintestinal sites due to its systemic effects. However, in veterinary medicine, the injury caused by rotavirus diarrhea is limited to the intestines, and its effects on various systemic structures remain poorly understood. In this observational case-control study, we aimed to determine the effects of HSP-27, Caspase-3, IL-2, γ-H2AX, HMGB-1, SP-D, and GDH (or GLDH) on the pathogenesis of rotavirus infection by using biomarkers for diagnostic purposes in lung and liver injury in neonate diarrheic calves natu

Trends in voluntary vaccination coverage in a Japanese city.

BACKGROUND: Large numbers of patients with diseases preventable by voluntary vaccines have been reported in Japan. However, it is difficult to analyze the impact of voluntary vaccination on disease prevention, as governments do not aggregate the number of recipients of vaccines that are not included in the national immunization program. This study investigated the association between the coverage rates of two voluntary vaccines (rotavirus and mumps vaccines) and the incidence of the diseases preventable by these vaccines. METHODS: We performed a prospective questionnaire-based observational s

Prospective characterization of norovirus compared with rotavirus acute diarrhea episodes in chilean children.

BACKGROUND: Rotavirus and more recently noroviruses are recognized as main causes of moderate to severe acute diarrhea episodes (ADE) in children < or =5 years of age. Comparing epidemiologic and clinical features of norovirus to rotavirus ADE will aid in the decision-making process required to develop norovirus vaccines. METHODS: Surveillance for ADE occurring in children < or =5 years of age was implemented in the emergency department (ED) and ward of a large hospital in Santiago and Valparaiso, and in 4 outpatient clinics in Santiago. A stool sample was obtained within 48 hours of consulta

Caputo fractional-order SVIR model for rotavirus: Numerical solutions using Laplace-Adomian decomposition method.

Rotavirus is a leading cause of severe gastroenteritis and diarrheal mortality in children under five years of age, especially in developing countries. Mathematical modeling plays a crucial role in understanding the transmission dynamics of rotavirus and in evaluating the impact of vaccination strategies. In this study, a Caputo fractional-order susceptible-vaccinated-infected-recovered (SVIR) epidemic model is proposed to explore the transmission dynamics of rotavirus while capturing memory and hereditary effects associated with disease progression and immune response. The disease-free and en

Rotavirus Vaccines: Effectiveness, Safety, and Future Directions.

Rotavirus is the leading cause of diarrheal death among children < 5 years old worldwide, estimated to have caused ~ 215,000 deaths in 2013. Prior to rotavirus vaccine implementation, > 65% of children had at least one rotavirus diarrhea illness by 5 years of age and rotavirus accounted for > 40% of all-cause diarrhea hospitalizations globally. Two live, oral rotavirus vaccines have been implemented nationally in > 100 countries since 2006 and their use has substantially reduced the burden of severe diarrheal illness in all settings. Vaccine efficacy and effectiveness estimates suggest there i

Risk of intussusception following rotavirus vaccination: An evidence based meta-analysis of cohort and case-control studies.

BACKGROUND: International post-licensure studies on rotavirus vaccines have identified an increased risk of intussusception in infants after administration. The first developed rotavirus vaccine (Rotashield (RRV-TV)) was suspended post-licensure in 1999 after an association with intussusception was found. The currently available second-generation rotavirus vaccines (Rotateq (RV5) and Rotarix (RV1)), are recommended as a routine vaccine by the World Health Organisation (WHO). Post-licensure studies of these vaccines have shown a smaller but temporal increased risk for developing intussusception
