The influence of an artificial playing surface on injury risk and perceptions of muscle soreness in elite Rugby Union.

This prospective cohort study investigated the influence of an artificial playing surface on injury risk and perceptions of muscle soreness in elite English Premiership Rugby Union players. Time loss (from 39.5 matches) and abrasion (from 27 matches) injury risk was compared between matches played on artificial turf and natural grass. Muscle soreness was reported over the 4 days following one match played on each surface by 95 visiting players (i.e., normally play on natural grass surfaces). There was a likely trivial difference in the overall injury burden relating to time-loss injuries betwe…

Are we ready? Preparedness of acute care providers for the Rugby World Cup 2011 in New Zealand.

UNLABELLED: New Zealand is hosting the Rugby World Cup (RWC) 2011. It is the largest sporting event in New Zealand's history, with around 70,000 fans estimated to visit the country from September to October 2011. This influx of tourists will have an impact on its already stretched healthcare services. The preparedness of New Zealand's healthcare system to handle this mass event is unclear. OBJECTIVES: The two main objectives of this study were (1) to determine the perceived preparedness of acute care providers in New Zealand to respond to the healthcare demands of RWC 2011; and (2) to determi…

The Relationship between Dynamic Balance and Jumping Tests among Adolescent Amateur Rugby Players. A Preliminary Study.

Rugby is a demanding contact sport. In light of research, poor balance, reduced jumping ability, muscle strength, and incorrect landing patterns might contribute to the increased risk of injury in athletes. Investigating the relationship between tests assessing these abilities might not only allow for the skillful programming of preventive training but also helps in assessing the risk of injury to athletes. Thus, the main purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between dynamic balance, vertical and horizontal jumps, and jump-landings movement patterns. Thirty-one healthy amat…

Predicting Noncontact Lower Limb Injury Using Lumbar Morphology in Professional Australian Football and Rugby League Players.

INTRODUCTION: Noncontact lower limb injuries are common within the Australian Football League (AFL) and National Rugby League (NRL). Smaller (<8.5 cm2) lumbar multifidus at the fifth vertebra (LM L5) and larger (>8.2 cm2) quadratus lumborum (QL) cross-sectional area (CSA) have been associated with increased noncontact lower limb injury risk in AFL players. These associations have not been explored in an NRL cohort. This study will attempt to replicate previous research findings by confirming that muscle morphology is associated with noncontact lower limb injury. METHODS: AFL (n = 87) and NRL …

Functional Connectivity Changes in Retired Rugby League Players: A Data-Driven Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study.

There is considerable interest in the long-term brain health of retired contact and collision sport athletes; however, little is known about possible underlying changes in functional brain connectivity in this group. We evaluated whole-brain functional connectivity patterns using multi-voxel pattern analysis (MVPA) to determine whether alterations in functional connectivity distinguish retired professional athletes from a matched group of healthy community control subjects. Thirty-two retired athletes with a history of multiple self-reported sport-related concussions and 36 healthy community c

Can a novel computer vision-based framework detect head-on-head impacts during a rugby league tackle?

BACKGROUND: Head-on-head impacts are a risk factor for concussion, which is a concern for sports. Computer vision frameworks may provide an automated process to identify head-on-head impacts, although this has not been applied or evaluated in rugby. METHODS: This study developed and evaluated a novel computer vision framework to automatically classify head-on-head and non-head-on-head impacts. Tackle events from professional rugby league matches were coded as either head-on-head or non-head-on-head impacts. These included non-televised standard-definition and televised high-definition video c…

The role of power and kinetic asymmetry in differentiating elite vs. sub-elite wheelchair rugby sprint performance.

Wheelchair sprint performance varies by sports classification. Yet, it is unclear how spatio-temporal, kinetic and kinetic asymmetries of wheelchair sprinting differ among wheelchair rugby players of different performance standard. The study purpose was to examine the associations between 30s sprint performances and spatio-temporal, kinetic and kinetic asymmetries on a dual-roller ergometer in elite and sub-elite wheelchair rugby players (n = 20). Kinetic differences between groups were investigated using statistical parametric mapping. Peak velocities were associated with the acceleration pha…
