Drawing on cognitive rumination theories and conceptualizing customer service interaction as a goal attainment situation for service employees, the current study examined employee rumination about negative service encounters as an intermediate cognitive process that explains the within-person fluctuations in negative emotional reactions resulting from customer mistreatment. Multilevel analyses of 149 call-center employees' 1,189 daily surveys revealed that on days that a service employee received more (vs. less) customer mistreatment, he or she ruminated more (vs. less) at night about negative

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Reduced Autobiographical Memory Specificity (rAMS) is a hypothesized vulnerability factor for depression. Rumination is thought to be one of the processes underlying rAMS, but research has failed to show an association between trait rumination and rAMS in individuals who are not currently depressed (e.g., community samples, college samples, and formerly depressed samples). The present study tested whether a challenge procedure that induces a self-discrepancy focus can elicit an association between trait rumination and rAMS in formerly depressed participants.

OBJECTIVE: Given the high prevalence of self-injury but low treatment-seeking among young adults, brief, accessible interventions might help reduce risk of self-injurious thoughts and behavior in this population. This cross-sectional study examined the moderating effects of decentering-a cognitive-affective regulation strategy-in the relation between non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and suicide ideation via cognitive-affective factors that increase risk for both NSSI and suicide ideation.
METHODS: College students (N = 125, 79% women), ages 18-27, pre-screened for moderate levels of depression

Self-focused rumination, defined as an excessive attentional focus on one's depressive symptoms and their causes, meanings, and consequences, is well-established for its contribution to the onset and maintenance of depressive and anxiety symptoms. However, it remains unclear how this cognitive style can be manifested in older adults and how it might bridge the influences of different stressful life events (SLEs), namely dependent SLEs (partially attributable to one's behaviours) and independent SLEs (entirely beyond personal control), with the two symptom dimensions. Data were from 1868 commun

BACKGROUND: Sleep problems are common among primary care nurses and are closely associated with psychological stress and maladaptive cognitive processing. Understanding the complex interplay among these psychological factors is critical for improving health outcomes and care quality.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the relationships between perceived stress, rumination (both positive and negative), and sleep quality in primary care nurses using a network analysis approach.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 316 primary care nurses in public primary healthcare institu

Insomnia is a significant public health concern associated with cognitive difficulties and mental health problems. Growing evidence suggests that anxiety and rumination may explain how insomnia contributes to paranoid thoughts. Yet, the specific roles of non-constructive rumination and the distinction between daytime and nighttime insomnia symptoms remain unclear. This study investigated the relationships among insomnia symptoms, anxiety, rumination styles, and paranoid thoughts in adults with and without insomnia. A total of 486 French-speaking participants completed self-report measures asse

Cyber-ostracism, a prevalent form of online social exclusion among college students, has been increasingly associated with aggressive behaviors in digital environments. Grounded in the General Aggression Model (GAM) and the Temporal Need-Threat Model (TNTM), this study examines the longitudinal mechanisms through which cyber-ostracism promotes cyber-aggression, emphasizing the mediating role of negative rumination and the moderating effect of positive rumination. A two-wave longitudinal design spanning six months was employed, involving 1166 college students (51.63 % female; M = 19.79, SD = 1.

OBJECTIVE: Perseverative cognitive processes, such as rumination, may indirectly influence effects of personality traits on cannabis use and related problems. Understanding relations among personality, rumination, and cannabis use motives may lead to better understanding of problematic cannabis use. The present study examined personality traits' influence on negative cannabis-related consequences via rumination and cannabis use coping motives.
METHODS: We tested a sequential path model across two independent samples such that the model was tested in one sample and replicated in the second sam

OBJECTIVE: To conduct a systematic review of the literature about the symptom of rumination in bipolar disorder (BD).
METHODS: We searched the MEDLINE (PubMed), ISI Web of Knowledge, PsycINFO, and SciELO databases using the descriptors "rumination" and "bipolar disorder" and no time limits. This strategy yielded 105 references, of which 74 were selected. Inclusion criteria were studies involving patients with BD and the use of at least one validated scale for the assessment of rumination. Review articles were excluded. Seventeen articles were ultimately analyzed and included in the review.

BACKGROUND: This study explored the relationship between humiliation, rumination and happiness. Humiliation is a very difficult and intense emotion that can be ruminated upon by an individual, with a consequent reduction in well-being. The introduction highlights the importance of dimensions of cognitive functioning and sets the stage to explore the consequences of humiliation for overall happiness.
PARTICIPANTS AND PROCEDURE: A total of 320 participants from Poland took part in an online survey via Qualtrics, providing questionnaire data on happiness (Oxford Happiness Questionnaire; OHQ), ru

BACKGROUND: Rumination is regarded as a cognitive risk factor and a focal point of clinical interventions aimed at mitigating suicidal ideation. Nonetheless, the mechanisms how rumination affects suicidal ideation warrant further exploration.
METHODS: A cohort of 831 Chinese college students (M age = 19.30 years, SD age = 1.17; 444 females) completed a questionnaire composed of the Ruminative Responses Scale, Entrapment Scale, Mindfulness Attention Awareness Scale, and Self-Rating Idea of Suicide Scale. A moderated mediation model was used to explore the relationship between rumination, entra

Although it is well known that exercise reduces depressive symptoms, the underlying psychological mechanisms remain unclear. This experimental study examined the acute effect of exercise on mood, and depressotypic memory bias and state rumination. Trait rumination was tested as a possible moderator. A sample of non-regular exercisers (N = 100) was randomized to exercise or rest. After a negative mood induction, the exercise condition cycled for 24 min at moderate intensity, while the rest condition rested. Negative and overgeneral memory bias, as well as positive and negative affect were asses

Individuals with acquired brain injuries (ABI) often experience depression following injury, with estimated rates between 20 and 40% within the first year and up to 50% thereafter (Fleminger et al., 2003). Previous studies with non-brain-injured individuals have identified that rumination is prevalent in both the development and maintenance of depression. The study aimed to explore how depressive rumination may contribute to overgeneral memory recall in ABI patients, by assessing the effects of manipulating ruminative self-focus on autobiographical memory performance across levels of brain inj

Rumination is a cognitive style characterized by repetitive thoughts about one's negative internal states and is a common symptom of depression. Previous studies have linked trait rumination to alterations in the default mode network, but predictive brain markers of rumination are lacking. Here, we adopt a predictive modeling approach to develop a neuroimaging marker of rumination based on the variance of dynamic resting-state functional connectivity and test it across 5 diverse subclinical and clinical samples (total n = 288). A whole-brain marker based on dynamic connectivity with the dorsom

Worry is the defining feature of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and rumination is a central process in depression. GAD and depression are highly comorbid, and worry and rumination reflect similar perseverative cognitive processes. Prior studies have largely assessed these emotion regulation strategies at the trait level, which has resulted in a limited understanding of their phasic characteristics, including associated physiological processes. We addressed this limitation by examining the relationship between spontaneous state-level worry and rumination and heart rate variability (HRV)-a

Forgiveness is crucial for emotional wellbeing and good mental health. It is therefore important to understand what cognitive processes may promote forgiveness to achieve optimal outcomes for individuals. There is some evidence to suggest that core self-evaluation (CSE) is related to how forgiving an individual may be. However, these studies have shown that this influence may be mediated by other cognitive processes. To date, the combined role of anger rumination and mindfulness as potential mediators has not been considered. This is despite recognized associations with constructs that underly
