Morphoea, also known as localized scleroderma, is a debilitating fibrosing disorder of uncertain aetiology, affecting the skin and subcutaneous tissues. Paediatric-onset disease is not uncommon and is associated with frequent relapses. The disease has complex pathogenetic mechanisms and multiple clinical subtypes, and affects children of all ages. Recent research has focused on elucidating the disease pathophysiology and identifying measures of disease activity. We performed a literature search on PubMed, MEDLINE and Google Scholar, using keywords such as 'pediatric morphea', 'juvenile localis

BACKGROUND: Pansclerotic morphea is a poorly described but extremely debilitating variant of localized scleroderma. We report a case with a rapidly fatal outcome in an 11-year-old girl.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: An 11-year-old girl with a 2-year history of morphea presented at our institution in April 2012. The sclerosis had started on her trunk and progressed rapidly to involve her entire skin. Initial treatment with corticosteroids was ineffective and she presented extremely painful ulcerations of the lower limbs. The outcome was rapidly fatal, in early 2014, due to cachexia and sepsis after tw

Connective tissue disorders (CTD), which are often also termed collagen vascular diseases, include a number of related inflammatory conditions. Some of these diseases include rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, systemic sclerosis (scleroderma), localized scleroderma (morphea variants localized to the skin), Sjogren's syndrome, dermatomyositis, polymyositis, and mixed connective tissue disease. In addition to the systemic manifestations of these diseases, there are a number of cutaneous features that make these conditions recognizable on physical exam. Lower extremity ulcers and

BACKGROUND: Linear scleroderma en coup de sabre is a rare subtype of localized scleroderma that may present with extracutaneous manifestations, including neurological and ophthalmological involvement. While uveitis has been described, it typically occurs in conjunction with active systemic or cutaneous disease. Asymptomatic anterior uveitis in the setting of long-standing remission is a rare occurrence. This report presents a pediatric case of linear scleroderma characterized by asymptomatic anterior uveitis that was asynchronous with systemic disease activity.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report th

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Linear scleroderma is the most common subtype of localized scleroderma (LoS) in children. It can be associated with extracutaneous manifestations and long-term sequelae. Thus, appropriate diagnosis and management are key to improve the prognosis. In this review, we summarize the most relevant recent publications for the diagnosis, evaluation of disease activity and adequate management of patients with linear scleroderma.
RECENT FINDINGS: There are specific clinical features that indicate activity in LoS; dermoscopy and Wood's lamp may be useful. Summarizing, scoring methods

A 51-year-old female developed linear-like scleroderma in the left thigh following a linear wound caused by a car accident. 27 years later she also developed a typical diffuse cutaneous systemic sclerosis with extensive skin involvement and bibasilar pulmonary fibrosis. The second case is a 39-year-old female who had a history of Raynaud's phenomenon since early childhood. She developed a morphea following a burning injury of the left thigh. 17 years later she also developed a typical limited cutaneous systemic sclerosis with sclerodactyly, skin ulcers and subcutaneous calcinosis. The third ca

Scleroderma is a diverse group of conditions which have in common fibrosis of skin and other tissues. Although less common in children than in adults, these conditions are an important cause of morbidity and occasional mortality when they occur in the pediatric population. Children are more likely than adults to develop localized forms of scleroderma, and because of the impact on growth, these can result in major facial or limb asymmetry, flexion contractures, and disability. Management approaches must take into consideration the effect of medications on the child (for example, growth failure

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Scleroderma or progressive systemic sclerosis is a systemic connective tissue disease of unknown origin, which normally courses with microangiopathy, extremities ischemia and severe pain. This report aimed at describing a case of intravenous lidocaine to treat ischemic pain and at emphasizing potential anti-inflammatory action of local anesthetics in scleroderma patients.
CASE REPORT: Female patient, clear mulatto 34 years old, nursing assistant, with scleroderma for approximately 8 years, presented with severe continuous, daily pain (numeric scale = 10) in upper an

BACKGROUND: Lichen sclerosus (LS) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease in which numerous therapies have been used, with only limited success. Because low-dose UVA1 phototherapy has been shown to be an effective treatment option for localized scleroderma, which shares several similar clinical and histologic features with LS, we initiated a clinical trial with this phototherapeutic modality in patients with LS.
METHODS: Ten patients suffering from extragenital LS were treated with low-dose UVA1 phototherapy 4 times weekly with single UVA1 doses of 20 J/cm(2). Forty treatment sessions were per
