The psychological impact of rosacea and the influence of current management options.

BACKGROUND: Rosacea is a common problem that is underdiagnosed; if left untreated can result in physical disfigurement and emotional distress. OBJECTIVE: We reviewed the current literature to determine the degree of psychosocial impact of rosacea and the importance of treatment. We also reviewed the current treatment options. METHODS: A search of the MEDLINE, EMBASE, and psycINFO databases from 1946 to present was performed to identify previous articles regarding the psychosocial and quality-of-life (QoL) impact of rosacea. RESULTS: A total of 17 studies were found that focused on the follo

Self-disturbance and schizophrenia: structure, specificity, pathogenesis (Current issues, New directions).

This paper offers an overview and clarification of the ipseity-disturbance or self-disorder hypothesis regarding schizophrenia, with focus on some recent and recommended research and theoretical refinements. There is need to expand research and theorizing in several directions-in order to: 1, specify more precisely what is truly distinctive in the schizophrenia spectrum, 2, explore internal structure and explanatory potential of this purported disturbance of minimal- or core-self experience, 3, generate testable hypotheses concerning pathogenetic pathways and psychotherapeutic interventions. Perception, experience and body identity.

Physician has to know the patient in the disease and not only the disease in the patient, from the dual perspective of the body as object and the body as subject. This also affects the patient who has to cope with the reality of having a body that bursts into the subject's consciousness as a vital threat, as source of discomfort and inability and being a body (Marcel). The human body in its dual aspect has been and is a great unknown, if not a great outrage in spite of the fact that we are our body and our body is each of us. We sometimes do not feel as we are and thus a confrontation arises,

Basic principles for applying cognitive-behavioral therapy to anorexia nervosa.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy continues to be one of the recommended evidenced-based interventions in the treatment of eating disorders. Cognitive-behavioral therapy is clearly of benefit in anorexia and bulimia nervosa, can be learned in a reasonable time, and is guided by manuals on cognitive-behavioral therapy. This article looks at theoretic and clinical interventions in the treatment of anorexia nervosa and suggests strategies related to effective psychotherapeutic treatment that can be used across a continuum of care.

Cosmetic breast augmentation and eating disorders.

AIMS: To comment on the relation between eating disorders and requests for cosmetic surgery in some women. METHODS: We report two cases of women who were accepted for cosmetic breast augmentation while suffering from current anorexia and bulimia nervosa. RESULTS: For both women, the motivation for seeking cosmetic surgery was directly related to the body image distortion and dissatisfaction which were an inherent part of the eating disorder. CONCLUSION: It is our contention that women with eating disorders require treatment to address the distortion in body image, and the belief that cosmet

Association between self-regulatory modes and alexithymia mediated by mindfulness and cognitive reappraisal.

This research examined alexithymia through the lens of personality as a dynamic regulatory system and focused on the ways in which two distinct self-regulatory modes, assessment and locomotion, are linked to alexithymia. Assessment involves the inclination to evaluate the value of something by weighing its strengths and weaknesses against other options leading to self-doubt and over-comparison. In contrast, locomotion reflects tendency to transition between states while investing psychological resources to actively pursue goals. Locomotion is associated with greater emotional intelligence, sel

The Link Between Child Sexual Abuse, Identity, and Self-Harm: A Study of Identity Statuses in Youth.

This study investigates the relationships between childhood sexual abuse (CSA), self-injurious thoughts, and behaviors within a sample exhibiting diverse identity statuses. Despite no significant correlations between identity statuses and CSA, self-injurious thoughts and behaviors were prevalent, with notable incidences in the Undefined and Arrested Moratorium statuses. The functions and triggers of self-injurious thoughts and behaviors have been analyzed, identifying significant associations with emotional states and family dynamics. Findings suggest a cyclical relationship between negative e

Self-Evaluation in Childhood Social Anxiety Disorder: Effects of Repeated Exposure with Support Strategies.

Children with social anxiety disorder (SAD) often perceive their social performance more negatively than external observers, reinforcing negative self-appraisals. Cognitive models suggest a vicious cycle between such distortions and heightened anxiety. This study tested whether repeated exposure to a social-evaluative task, paired with brief, ecologically valid support strategies, improves self-appraisal in children with SAD compared to baseline without support. Participants were 76 children (SAD: n = 33, Mage = 11.73, SD = 1.46, 64% female; healthy controls [HC]: n = 43, Mage = 11.40, SD = 1.

The relationship between major life events and non-suicidal self-injury among college students: the effect of rumination and body image.

BACKGROUND: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) poses a growing risk to public health worldwide. While numerous studies have identified major life events as key risk factors for NSSI, the mechanisms by which emotional and cognitive problems mediate or moderate this relationship remain unclear. To enhance the understanding of this field, we will draw upon the cascade theory of self-injury and the benefits and barriers model, to examine the relationship between major life events and NSSI, as well as the effect of rumination and body image. METHODS: A sample of 2,717 college students (Mage = 19.81 y

Self-destructive processes and suicide.

This paper focuses on theoretical, empirical and clinical accounts of self-destructive processes in the general population, with a particular focus on suicidal individuals. The theoretical perspective includes views on self-destruction as (A) a motivated wish or need, (B) an outcome of emotional distress, (C) an outcome of distorted cognitions, and (D) as a general personality feature. The different principles of destructive operations that are inherent in each of the theoretical propositions are delineated. Examination of the empirical data reveals that various self-destructive processes desc

Becoming a problematic consumer of narcotics.

Based on participant observation studies of problematic consumers of narcotics in Stockholm, Sweden, this paper presents a life-history model illuminating why the research subjects started using narcotics and continued to do so. The model consists of four stages. The first two are initiated before the individual begins taking drugs. and lead to the development of a drastically negative self-image. The third stage consists of consciously breaching societal norms, thereby provoking responses which confirm and consolidate the negative self-image. In the fourth stage still more drastic deviant beh

Refining the conceptualization and assessment of internalized weight stigma: A mixed methods approach.

Internalized weight stigma has gained increasing attention in empirical studies, though questions remain about the adequacy of existing measures. The current study utilized a mixed methods approach, including a novel semi-structured interview, to revisit the conceptualization of internalized weight stigma and explore in more depth the stereotypes and impacts of weight reported by individuals with high scores on the widely-used Weight Bias Internalization Scale. All participants were interviewed as part of the screening procedures for two clinical trials (Study 1 n = 84, mean age=47.8 years, 83
