The incidence of enteric fever caused by Salmonella enterica serotype Paratyphi A has been increasing in India since 1996. In 1998, the incidence of enteric fever caused by drug- resistant S. Paratyphi A abruptly increased in the New Delhi region. In the first 6 months of 1999, 32% of isolates were resistant to both chloramphenicol and cotrimoxazole and another 13% were resistant to more than two antibiotics.

Nonpoliovirus enteroviruses cause a variety of diseases that are common in young children and adults. The "gold standard" for laboratory diagnosis of enteroviruses is cell culture isolation, followed by serotype identification by neutralization assay. These procedures are time-consuming and expensive. Restriction endonuclease maps of the genome of fowl adenovirus (FAV) serotype 9 have been constructed for the restriction endonucleases NdeI, NotI and XbaI. The total size of the FAV-9 genome was estimated to be 44.5 kb pairs, consistent with previous reports that FAV genomes are approximately 10 kb larger than human adenovirus (HAV). The pathogenicity of this virus in day-old chickens was intermediate between the pathogenicity of the non-pathogenic and the highly pathogenic FAVs.

Pathogenicity of feline reovirus serotype 2 isolates, Nos. 114 and 140 strains recovered from the feces of cats with diarrhea, was experimentally determined. The antigenic structure of 48 tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBE) strains isolated in the Irkutsk region and the Buryat ASSR in 1960-1981 was studied. Antigenic analysis was performed by the agar gel diffusion-precipitation test using adsorption of the immune sera. Comparative studies of some properties of Herpes simplex viruses type I and II and their ability to reproduce latent infection in vitro revealed no essential differences between them. Virus-neutralizing and hemagglutinating antibodies to the virus type II are detected reliably more frequently in cervical cancer patients than in healthy ones. Forty six per cent of cervical cancer patients and thirty nine per cent of healthy females along with antibodies against the virus of serotype II showed a specific cellular response, which was demonstrated in the reaction of leucocyte migration inhibition.

To learn the prevalence of penicillin-resistant pneumococci and the distribution of serotypes in proved pneumococcal infections, we studied 98 pneumococci recovered from blood over a 4-year period. Penicillin susceptibility was determined by the agar dilution method. Serotyping was done by the capsular swelling (quellung) test. Only one strain showed diminished susceptibility to penicillin (minimal inhibitory concentration, 0.12 micrograms/ml). This is a report on the experimental infection of cattle with Leptospira interrogans serotype szwajizak. The principal clinical features in three 4-week-old Holstein-Friesian heifers intravenously inoculated were fever, listlessness, anorexia, weakness, and diarrhea. During a five-year period, 1965 to 1969 inclusive, pneumococci from 294 patients with acute pneumococcal infections were serotyped. Pneumococci of 33 serotypes were encountered, of which types 3 and 19 were most frequent. The spectrum of infections included pneumonia, meningitis, peritonitis, otitis media and mastoiditis, wound infection and conjuctivitis.
