The bending stiffness of shoes is beneficial to running energetics if it does not disturb the natural MTP joint flexion.

A local minimum for running energetics has been reported for a specific bending stiffness, implying that shoe stiffness assists in running propulsion. However, the determinant of the metabolic optimum remains unknown. Highly stiff shoes significantly increase the moment arm of the ground reaction force (GRF) and reduce the leverage effect of joint torque at ground push-off. Inspired by previous findings, we hypothesized that the restriction of the natural metatarsophalangeal (MTP) flexion caused by stiffened shoes and the corresponding joint torque changes may reduce the benefit of shoe bendin…

Medial shoe-ground pressure and specific running injuries: A 1-year prospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: Achilles tendinitis, plantar fasciopathy and medial tibial stress syndrome injuries (APM-injuries) account for approximately 25% of the total number of running injuries amongst recreational runners. Reports on the association between static foot pronation and APM-injuries are contradictory. Possibly, dynamic measures of pronation may display a stronger relationship with the risk of APM-injuries. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to investigate if running distance until the first APM-injury was dependent on the foot balance during stance phase in recreational male runn

Evaluation of DNA damage by the Comet assay in shoe workers exposed to toluene and other organic solvents.

The alkaline single-cell gel electrophoresis (or Comet) assay was applied to evaluate DNA damage in cryopreserved peripheral blood mononuclear leukocytes from 34 female shoe workers exposed to organic solvents and a group of 19 non-exposed women. We also investigated whether the polymorphisms of glutathione S-transferase M1 (GSTM1) and T1 (GSTT1) genes affect individual level of DNA damage possibly induced by the solvent exposure. Chemical measurements of workplace air in the two factories studied showed that the workers were exposed to acetone, gasoline, and toluene in both factories and to e

The impact of high-heel shoes on knee joint space width in healthy young females: A real-time ultrasound study.

BACKGROUND: Wearing high heel shoes is thought to increase the risk of knee osteoarthritis in females by altering knee joint alignment and increasing muscle activation. However, direct measurements of knee joint space width using ultrasound have been limited. This study aimed to investigate the effects of 8-cm high-heel shoes on knee joint articular space in healthy young females during standing. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 30 healthy females (age 22 ± 1.3 years). Participants' knee medial, lateral and patellofemoral joint space width were measured using an ultrasound …

In their shoes: Health care professionals walking a day in the life of patients with short bowel syndrome & intestinal failure.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Short bowel syndrome leading to intestinal failure (SBS-IF) is a condition characterised by the inability of the gut to absorb the amount of water, nutrients and micronutrients needed to survive and requires long term home parenteral nutrition (HPN) to sustain life. Health care professionals (HCPs) working with patients with SBS-IF are aware of the daily challenges patients face. However, few have experienced the condition first-hand and put themselves 'in the shoes' of their patients. In Their Shoes (ITS) is an immersive simulation delivered through a smartphone application…

How do rocker-soled shoes influence the knee adduction moment in people with knee osteoarthritis? An analysis of biomechanical mechanisms.

The primary objective was to examine mechanisms behind previously observed changes in the knee adduction moment (KAM) with rocker-soled shoes, in participants sub-grouped according to whether they experienced an immediate decrease, or increase, in peak KAM. In subgroups where frontal plane knee ground reaction force (GRF) lever-arm emerged as a significant predictor, a secondary aim was to examine biomechanical factors that contributed to change in this parameter. Thirty individuals with symptomatic, radiographic knee osteoarthritis (OA) underwent 3D gait analysis in unstable rocker-soled shoe…

Design of a user-centered intelligent shoe cabinet for smart home hygiene using Kano-AHP-TRIZ.

In Internet of Things (IoT)–enabled smart home environments, managing entryway hygiene is becoming increasingly important for residential health and indoor environmental quality. Intelligent shoe cabinets are expected to integrate functions such as sterilization, drying, energy efficiency, noise reduction, and space optimization. However, most existing designs address these functions independently and lack a systematic, user-centered design framework. This study proposes an IoT-enabled intelligent shoe cabinet design based on an integrated Kano–Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP)–Theory of Invent

How Does Manipulation of Advanced Running Shoe Midsole Compliance Influence Frontal Plane Kinematics and Kinetics?

Advanced footwear technology distance running shoes (AFTs) have been shown to reduce the oxygen cost of running at a given speed compared to traditional distance running shoes. This may be at least partly driven by the compliant, resilient midsole properties of AFTs. Increasing the compliance of AFT midsoles may further improve running economy but may also result in increased frontal plane motion and therefore instability. This study quantified frontal plane kinematics and kinetics during running with one type of advanced footwear technology running shoe with three different midsole properties…

Measuring In-Shoe Plantar Strain Outcomes in the Presence of Callus: A Preliminary Study Using the STAMPS3D Measurement System.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetes-related foot ulcers (DFU) are growing in prevalence, driven by the global rise in diabetes. Plantar callus has been identified as a risk factor for DFU formation, with its presence considered highly predictive for ulceration. Preventative strategies, such as debridement and offloading aim to reduce the thickness of localised hard skin formed through repetitive high pressure and shear stress. Although several studies have looked at the quantitative effects of callus and its removal in the neuropathic foot, assessments have relied solely on pressure measurements, neglectin
