Colonization and pathology of Borrelia afzelii in its natural hosts.

Studies of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in laboratory mice and humans have shown that spirochaetes disseminate from the site of infection (skin) to internal tissues, and cause various pathological effects. However, less is known about colonization and pathology of Lyme borreliosis spirochaetes in their natural hosts. In the present study, we assessed the colonization and manifestations during B. afzelii infection in reservoir hosts (yellow-necked mouse, Apodemus flavicollis; bank vole, Myodes glareolus; common shrew, Sorex araneus) infected in the wild. The infection prevalence and bacteria

Host-utilization differences between larval and nymphal deer ticks in northeastern U.S. sites enzootic for Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto.

In the northeastern U.S., Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto, the agent of Lyme disease, is maintained between vertebrate hosts and subadult deer ticks (the northern clade of Ixodes scapularis, formerly known as Ixodes dammini). Theoretical arguments suggest that the force of transmission would be greatest when infected nymphal ticks focus their bites on the same host as the uninfected larvae. Stage-specific differences in host utilization would reduce the force of transmission, but to date such differences remain understudied. We determined the host utilization differences of larval and nymph

Metagenomic analysis of commensal small mammal samples from an international cargo shipping area, Bangkok Port, reveals potential zoonotic pathogens and implications for One Health surveillance.

Commensal small mammals, such as rats and shrews, are recognized reservoirs for numerous zoonotic pathogens; however, their role in pathogen circulation at transport hubs remains underexplored. This study employs shotgun metagenomic sequencing to characterize microbial communities and assess zoonotic potential in tissue samples from commensal small mammals captured at Bangkok Port, an international cargo shipping hub in Thailand between June and August 2025. Following host read depletion, taxonomic profiling was performed to identify bacterial taxa of public health relevance, including sequenc

Circumventing the polydactyly 'constraint': the mole's 'thumb'.

Talpid moles across all northern continents exhibit a remarkably large, sickle-like radial sesamoid bone anterior to their five digits, always coupled with a smaller tibial sesamoid bone. A possible developmental mechanism behind this phenomenon was revealed using molecular markers during limb development in the Iberian mole (Talpa occidentalis) and a shrew (Cryptotis parva), as shrews represent the closest relatives of moles but do not show these conspicuous elements. The mole's radial sesamoid develops later than true digits, as shown by Sox9, and extends into the digit area, developing in r

Diversity in mammalian chiasmatic architecture: ipsilateral axons are deflected at glial arches in the prechiasmatic optic nerve of the eutherian Tupaia belangeri.

Permanent ipsilaterally projecting axons approach the chiasmatic midline in rodents but are confined to lateral parts of the optic chiasm in marsupials. Hence, principally different mechanisms were thought to underlie axon pathway choice in eutherian (placental) and marsupial mammals. First evidence of diversity in eutherian chiasmatic architecture came from studies in the newborn and adult tree shrew Tupaia belangeri (Jeffery et al. [1998] J. Comp. Neurol. 390:183-193). Here, as in marsupials, ipsilaterally projecting axons do not approach the midline. The present study aims to clarify how th

Tick-borne zoonotic bacteria in wild and domestic small mammals in northern Spain.

The prevalence and diversity of tick-borne zoonotic bacteria (Borrelia spp., Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Coxiella burnetii, and spotted fever group rickettsiae) infecting 253 small mammals captured in the Basque Country (Spain) were assessed using PCR and reverse line blot hybridization. Trapping sites were selected around sheep farms (study 1, 2000 to 2002) and recreational parks (study 2, 2003 to 2005). The majority of the studied mammals (162) were wood mice (Apodemus sylvaticus), but six other different species were also analyzed: yellow-necked mice (Apodemus flavicollis), shrews (Crocidura

Tiny cystine stones in the gallbladder of a patient with cholecystolithiasis complicating acute cholecystitis: a case report.

Cystine stones, the main component of which is cystine, are very common urinary calculi, but are rare in the gall bladder. In animals, there has been only one report of cystine gallstones in tree shrews, and to our knowledge, this is the first report of cystine gallstones in humans.

Borna Disease Virus 1 as Cause of Fatal Meningoencephalomyelitis in Wild Hedgehogs, Germany, 2022-2025.

Borna disease virus 1 (BoDV-1) causes encephalitis with a fatality rate of >90% in domestic mammals and humans. Currently, the bicolored white-toothed shrew is the only known reservoir host. We report BoDV-1 infections in 15 wild European hedgehogs from an endemic area in Germany. Because hedgehogs are distant relatives of shrews and often cared for by humans, the cases raise concern regarding a potential zoonotic risk. All the hedgehogs that tested positive for BoDV-1 died of neurological disease and exhibited severe polio-predominant lymphoplasmohistiocytic meningoencephalitis. However, beca

AFB1 consolidates HBV harm to induce liver injury and carcinogenic risk by inactivating FTCD-AS1-PXR-MASP1 axis.

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) has been reported to synergize with hepatitis B virus (HBV) to induce development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Precise daily exposure to AFB1 and its contribution to liver injury have not been quantified and have even been disregarded due to lack of convenient detection, and the strong species specificity of HBV infection has restricted research on their synergistic harm. Hence, our objective was to investigate the molecular mechanisms by which AFB1 exacerbates HBV-related injury. We constructed tree shrew models with 400 μg HBV plasmid and 4 mg/kg AFB1 co-exposure fo

Comparative Evaluation of Different Tissues and Molecular Techniques for the Zoonotic Surveillance of Scrub Typhus.

Background and Objectives: Scrub typhus (ST) is detected in one-fourth of patients with acute febrile illnesses, confirming its nationwide re-emergence. The disease, if not diagnosed, can lead to multiple organ dysfunction and mortality. Being a vector-borne zoonotic disease, the molecular survey for pathogens in animal hosts is essential to predict the risk of its transmission to humans. Hence, this study aimed at identifying the effective animal tissue and molecular technique for zoonotic surveillance of ST infection in small animal hosts. Methods: Rodents/shrews were trapped from seventeen

Molecular Prevalence and Genotype Detection of Babesia microti in Multiple Wild Rodent Species and Suncus murinus From Subtropical Mountainous Regions of South-Central Zhejiang, China.

Human babesiosis, an emerging zoonosis with ongoing geographic expansion, is primarily caused by Babesia microti, a tick-borne apicomplexan parasite that resides within host erythrocytes. While small mammals serve as its recognized reservoir hosts, the relative contribution of sympatric wild rodents and shrews in subtropical mountain endemic areas of Eastern China remains poorly characterized. In South-central Zhejiang, an endemic focus of human babesiosis, systematic data on local small-mammal hosts remain limited. In this study, 630 small mammals, comprising six rodent species and the shrew

Abundance and distribution of Xenopsylla cheopis on small mammals collected in West Java, Indonesia during rodent-borne disease surveys.

During February 2004 and September 2005, Xenopsylla cheopis were collected from small mammal hosts during rodent-bone disease surveys in Jakarta and Bandung, Indonesia. During 4 trap nights in Jakarta, 4 rodent species (Rattus exulans, Rattus norvegicus, Rattus tanezumi and Mus musculus) and one shrew species (Suncus murinus) were collected. Rattus tanezumi had the highest X. cheopis load (128 X. cheopis from 84 R. tanezumi) but R. norvegicus had the highest flea index, 1.8. In Bandung, over 6 trap nights 3 rodent species were collected (R. norvegicus, R. tanezumi and M. musculus) and the shre

The veterinary manuals by Vegetius, Pelagonius and Chiron Kentauros, all three dating from the 4th century, contain remarks about livestock being poisoned by animal venoms. It is suggested, that livestock bitten by contaminated shrews, reptiles, scorpions, beetles and spiders shows signs of poisoning. The authors present various possible therapies for the sick livestock.

Unexpectedly high diversity of trypanosomes in small sub-Saharan mammals.

The extremely species-rich genus Trypanosoma has recently been divided into 16 subgenera, most of which show fairly high host specificity, including the subgenus Herpetosoma parasitizing mainly rodents. Although most Herpetosoma spp. are highly host-specific, the best-known representative, Trypanosoma lewisi, has a cosmopolitan distribution and low host specificity. The present study investigates the general diversity of small mammal trypanosomes in East and Central Africa and the penetration of invasive T. lewisi into communities of native rodents. An extensive study of blood and tissue sampl

Leptospirosis in sugarcane plantation and fishing communities in Kagera northwestern Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis is a bacterial zoonotic disease of worldwide importance, though relatively neglected in many African countries including sub Saharan Africa that is among areas with high burden of this disease. The disease is often mistaken for other febrile illnesses such as dengue, malaria, rickettsioses and enteric fever. Leptospirosis is an occupational disease likely to affect people working in environments prone to infestation with rodents which are the primary reservoir hosts of this disease. Some of the populations at risk include: sugarcane plantation workers, wetland farmers

Trypanosome diversity in small mammals in Uganda and the spread of Trypanosoma lewisi to native species.

Uganda's diverse small mammalian fauna thrives due to its rich habitat diversity, which hosts a wide range of blood parasites, including trypanosomes, particularly the subgenus Herpetosoma typical for rodent hosts. We screened a total of 711 small mammals from various habitats for trypanosomes, with 253 microscopically examined blood smears and 458 tissue samples tested by nested PCR of the 18S rRNA gene. Of 51 rodent and 12 shrew species tested, microscopic screening reaches 7% overall prevalence (with four rodent species positive out of 15 and none of the shrew species out of four), while ne

High Prevalence of Sarcocystis in a Collapsed Black Rat (Rattus rattus) Population from the Florida Keys, Florida, USA.

We collected and screened black rats (Rattus rattus) in Key Largo, Florida, USA, to determine the potential role of disease or parasites in the collapse of the local population. Rats appeared healthy, but 94% (n=15/16) tested positive for Sarcocystis sp. The partial 18S rRNA gene sequence was 98.7-99.7% similar to a strain of Sarcocystis zuoi that is now considered a strain of the newly described Sarcocystis kani within the larger S. zuoi species complex that contains numerous new species. These Sarcocystis spp. use Asian snakes as definitive hosts and rodents, shrews, or tree shrews as interm
