Revascularization Technique for the Treatment of External Inflammatory Root Resorption: A Report of 3 Cases.

The current external inflammatory root resorption treatment protocol, which uses calcium hydroxide dressing, usually comprises multiple and long-term applications. In addition to the need for multiple appointments for calcium hydroxide replacement, the long-term maintenance of this compound in the root canal weakens dental structures. A modification of this therapy would be advisable. In this clinical investigation, 3 patients with external inflammatory root resorption were submitted to revascularization therapy protocol usually used in teeth with necrotic pulp and open apices. The teeth were

Response of the pulp of dogs to capping with mineral trioxide aggregate or a calcium hydroxide cement.

This study was conducted to observe the response of dogs' dental pulp to mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and a calcium hydroxide cement when used as pulp capping materials. After the pulps of 30 teeth were exposed, they were capped with either MTA or a calcium hydroxide cement. Histological analysis was performed 2 months after treatment. Results showed a healing process with complete tubular dentin bridge formation and no inflammation in any of the pulps capped with MTA. On the other hand, only five specimens from the calcium hydroxide cement group formed a complete dentin bridge. In this ex

Recent advances in drug repurposing for dentin repair.

OBJECTIVE: Exposure of a vital dental pulp following deep caries removal, accidental restorative procedures or trauma can severely affect the dentin-pulp complex in adult permanent teeth. To preserve a biologically functional healthy pulp, promote dentin repair, and minimize invasive and costly procedures, direct pulp capping is commonly used in vital pulp therapies. Despite its well-accepted therapeutic value, current pulp capping inorganic hydraulic calcium-silicate cements like mineral trioxide aggregate show limited targeted bioactive effects. Therefore, repurposing clinically approved dru…

Composite bone cements based on halloysite nanotube with enhanced drug elution.

Antibiotic-loaded PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate) bone cement (ALBC) is widely used to prevent and treat periprosthetic joint infections (PJIs), yet its clinical efficacy is limited by issues like burst release and short release duration. To address these challenges, this study developed a composite bone cement (HV-PMMA) loaded with vancomycin-functionalized halloysite nanotubes (HNTs-Van). The results showed that HV-PMMA optimized antibiotic elution: it avoided initial burst release, and the drug elution amount of HV-PMMA was superior to that of traditional ALBC with vancomycin formulation. The

Novel injectable strontium-hardystonite phosphate cement for cancellous bone filling applications.

Injectable bone cement (IBC) such as those based on methacrylates and hydraulic calcium phosphate and calcium sulfate-based cements have been used extensively for filling bone defects with acceptable clinical outcomes. There is a need however for novel IBC materials that can address some of the inherent limitations of currently available formulations to widen the clinical application of IBC. In this study, we characterized a novel hydraulic IBC formulation consisting of bioactive strontium-doped hardystonite (Sr-HT) ceramic microparticles and sodium dihydrogen phosphate, herein named Sr-HT pho
