Leptospirosis is a widespread zoonotic disease and lacks in efficient diagnostic tools. In the present study, a nanogold based dot blot immunoassay was developed and evaluated for the detection of leptospirosis in human urine samples. This method was found to be rapid (<4 h) with higher sensitivity (>4.2-14.6%) than horse radish peroxidase (HRP) conjugated dot blot assay.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been widely used in commercial products. This study aims to understand the impact of AgNPs on the early developmental stages in zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos. Embryos were exposed to two sizes of AgNPs at three dose levels, as well to free Ag(+) ions, for a range of 4-96 h post-fertilization (hpf). A small rehabilitation hospital in northern Arkansas had a problem with catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI). A review of practices and policies provided no reason for the trend. The facility trialed an ionic silver Foley catheter finding that it dramatically reduced the incidence of CAUTI in their patient population.

Many thousands of urinary tract infections (UTIs) are linked to the insertion of an indwelling urethral catheter (Saint et al 2000). Catheterisation is often prolonged unnecessarily (Saint et al 2002), thereby increasing the infection risk. In this audit of 133 medical and surgical patients who were catheterised in an acute NHS hospital trust, the potential of a new silver alloy hydrogel-coated catheter to reduce the rate of infection was demonstrated.
