PURPOSE: To compare the astigmatic correction outcomes of small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) surgery with or without two different cyclotorsion compensation methods.

BACKGROUND: Photic sneeze reflex (PSR) also known as autosomal dominant compelling helioophthalmic outburst is a rare condition characterized by uncontrolled sneezing in response to bright light. The exact mechanism causing this is poorly understood. However, various hypotheses have been proposed. Ophthalmic examination involves exposing the patient to bright light like slit lamp, indirect ophthalmoscopy, and surgical microscope, which can trigger sneezing in PSR patients.

A 31-year-old white woman with relapsing polychondritis presented with profound, diffuse episcleritis, marked conjunctival chemosis, and corneal-limbal inflammation and melting, which was refractory to corticosteroid treatment. With the initiation of chlorambucil the inflammation subsided, leaving an almost normal slit-lamp picture. The associated findings of nasal cartilage and pinna cartilage inflammation helped to establish the diagnosis of relapsing polychondritis in this patient.

An abnormal change in skin colour is designated as discolouration of the skin. A 73-year-old male patient with circumscribed discolouration of the upper lid margin near the lacrimal pathway is presented. Slit lamp biomicroscopy showed no other signs of pathomorphological change. An excisional biopsy was performed. The whole abnormal area was removed. The oculoplastic procedure was the surest way to establish a definite diagnosis of Prurigo nodularis.

A 45-year-old female patient from Bosnia complained of recurrent swelling and redness of the upper eyelid and 24 h later the patient consulted the Salzburg eye hospital because of a subconjunctival swelling. The slit lamp investigation showed a living Dirofilaria repens which could be removed by forceps.
