Myolipoma of the uterus with bizarre-nucleated cells: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Myolipoma is a rare benign mesenchymal tumor composed of mature adipose tissue, smooth muscle bundles and blood vessels, which predominantly occurs in the retroperitoneum, inguinal region and abdominal wall. Primary uterine involvement is extremely uncommon, and the presence of bizarre-nucleated cells within such tumors is even rarer. The morphological features of these cells may mimic malignant neoplasms, posing great challenges for clinical and pathological diagnosis. METHODS: We report a 61-year-old female patient with imaging and ultrasonographic findings suggestive of a uteri

Role of stem cells in human uterine leiomyoma growth.

BACKGROUND: Uterine leiomyoma is the most common benign tumor in reproductive-age women. Each leiomyoma is thought to be a benign monoclonal tumor arising from a single transformed myometrial smooth muscle cell; however, it is not known what leiomyoma cell type is responsible for tumor growth. Thus, we tested the hypothesis that a distinct stem/reservoir cell-enriched population, designated as the leiomyoma-derived side population (LMSP), is responsible for cell proliferation and tumor growth. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: LMSP comprised approximately 1% of all leiomyoma and 2% of all myometrium-derive

[Relationship between CT findings and immunohistochemical types of gastrointestinal stromal tumors].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between CT findings and immunohistochemical types of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST). METHODS: CT imaging and clinicopathological data of 85 patients with GIST were analyzed retrospectively. The CT findings of GIST including lesion location, size, contour, boundary, tumor growth pattern, degree of enhancement, necrosis and calcification, were summarized and compared with the immunohistochemical types of the GIST. RESULTS: Of the 85 patients, smooth muscle differentiation was in 26 cases (30.6%), neural differentiation in 20 (23.5%) , both smooth

Congenital smooth muscle hamartoma of the nipple: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Hamartoma is a benign developmental disorder. This focal malformation is composed of mature tissues normally observed in a given organ but randomly distributed, often in disturbed quantitative ratio, with growth rate similar to that of the surrounding tissues. Congenital smooth muscle hamartoma presents as flesh-colored or variably pigmented plaque or macule. To our knowledge this is the first case of congenital smooth muscle hamartoma of the nipple reported in the available literature. CASE: A 44-year-old woman with a history of left breast cancer, for which she had mastectomy an

Angiomyolipoma of the liver: a collective review.

This review summarizes the clinical and pathological findings of 52 cases of hepatic angiomyolipoma to discern and establish the most pertinent clinical and pathologic characteristics of the tumor. The disease was symptomatic in 60% of the patients. Abdominal pain or distress was the most common symptom, appearing in 37% of the patients, followed by malaise and upper abdominal mass or hepatomegaly. Of the 52 patients, only three (5.8%) showed associated tuberous sclerosis. Antemortem diagnosis of the tumor has been made with increasing frequency with the recent advent of computed tomography (C

Non-trophoblastic tumor of the placenta with combined histologic features of chorangioma and leiomyoma.

Chorangioma is the most common non-trophoblastic tumor of the placenta, which represents an excessive vascular proliferation within chorionic villi. While the histologic picture of a chorangioma may vary greatly from lesion to lesion, the presence of abundant smooth muscle tissue within a chorangioma has not been previously reported. Herein we report a case of a 34-year-old primigravida woman with a peculiar mesenchymal placental tumor, characterized by combined features of chorangioma and leiomyoma; large lobules of numerous small blood vessels within loose stroma, separated by broad bundles

Perivascular Leiomyomatosis: A Unique Case Report.

There are 3 histologically benign smooth muscle neoplasms that have unusual growth patterns. These include intravascular leiomyomatosis, benign metastasizing leiomyoma, and leiomyomatosis peritonealis desseminata. We report a unique case of perivascular leiomyomatosis. The tumor showed multiple nodules of benign smooth muscle with some of the nodules closely associated with the periphery of the medial muscle layer of venous channels. All the neoplastic nodules were located on the outer surface of venous channels, thus precluding a diagnosis of intravascular leiomyomatosis. To the best of our k

Bilateral testicular atrophy and hypogonadism induced by paratesticular leiomyosarcoma and untreated cryptorchidism.

Paratesticular leiomyosarcomas are rare low-grade malignancies from smooth muscle, presenting as painless scrotal masses in middle-aged men. This case describes a 48-year-old with a left-sided tumor and contralateral cryptorchidism, leading to bilateral testicular compromise and hypogonadism. He presented with asymptomatic left scrotal enlargement; examination revealed a 7-cm left mass and atrophic right inguinal testis. Labs showed normal tumor markers but primary hypogonadism. Imaging confirmed no metastasis. Bilateral orchiectomy yielded grade 1 pT1 leiomyosarcoma (positive for smooth muscl

Identification of suitable reference genes for gene expression measurement in uterine sarcoma and carcinosarcoma tumors.

OBJECTIVE: To date no suitable reference genes have been identified in carcinosarcomas and non-epithelial malignant tumors of corpus uteri for normalizing real-time RT-PCR (qRT-PCR) assays. The purpose of this study was to select appropriate references for gene expression studies in these tumors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used RNA extracts from 75 tissue samples, representing 50 tumors and 25 fragments of normal uterine tissues obtained from 50 patients treated for mixed tumors, smooth muscle sarcoma and stromal sarcoma of the uterus. qRT-PCR for five potential reference (housekeeping) genes,

Cotyledonoid leiomyoma in pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Benign smooth-muscle tumors (leiomyomata) are the most frequent tumors found in the female genital tract. They are easy to diagnose in pregnancy and usually managed conservatively. Some variant forms with unusual infiltrative growth pattern have been known, but they are rare in pregnancy. The variant forms pose diagnostic and management difficulties. CASE: An unusual type of leiomyoma (cotyledonoid), adhering to the bowels and occupying the whole left broad ligament, was excised completely at 14 weeks of gestation, and the pregnancy continued to term. CONCLUSION: Familiarity with

Angiomyofibroblastoma of the vulva with sarcomatous transformation ("angiomyofibrosarcoma").

We report on a locally recurrent vulvar tumor in an 80-year-old woman that we believe represents the first example of malignant transformation of an angiomyofibroblastoma. The tumor was predominantly a typical angiomyofibroblastoma, composed of epithelioid or oval cells with eosinophilic cytoplasm that tended to cluster in small groups and around blood vessels. These areas merged imperceptibly with a high-grade sarcoma that resembled a myxoid malignant fibrous histiocytoma. The tumor cells in the benign areas were diffusely immunoreactive for vimentin; many cells were positive for smooth muscl

Leiomyosarcoma of the splenic vein.

Leiomyosarcomas are smooth muscle-derived tumors generally found intra-abdominally in the retoperitoneum, mesentery, or omentum. Only approximately 5% of these tumors originate from vessel wall smooth muscle. Those derived from the splenic vein are exceedingly rare, with only one previously published case in the literature. We present a second case of leiomyosarcoma of the splenic vein in a 58-year-old woman with 2 months of epigastric pain. A distal pancreatectomy was performed to include the tumor found centered in the splenic vein at the splenic and portal vein confluence and growing into t

Lingual Leiomyosarcoma: A Histopathological Case Report.

Leiomyosarcomas are rare malignant mesenchymal neoplasms originating from smooth muscle cells. Although leiomyosarcoma is commonly located in the female reproductive system, gastrointestinal tract, and subcutaneous tissues, it is a rare entry in the head and neck area, probably due to the scarcity of smooth muscle tissue in this topographical region. Herein we present a histopathological case report of a 60-year-old male with a slow-growing painless mass on the middle third of the right lateral lingual margin, with focal ulceration measuring 1x1.5cm. After gross excision, histopathology reveal

Angioleiomyoma (Vascular Leiomyoma) of the Oral Cavity.

A 70-year-old male presented with a slow growing, dome shaped and painless mass of the hard palate. The mass was excised. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of a angioleiomyoma (vascular leiomyoma). A leiomyoma is an uncommon benign tumor of smooth muscle differentiation. True leiomyomas of the oral cavity are rare and most oral tumors are derived from the smooth muscle of walls of blood vessels. Therefore, they are called vascular leiomyomas or angioleiomyomas. Clinically, they may resemble a myriad other conditions both benign and malignant. A definitive diagnosis depends

Leiomyoma of the hard palate: a case report.

Leiomyoma is a benign smooth muscle tumor that is very rarely located in the oral cavity. It is accepted that the smooth muscle giving rise to this tumor corresponds to the tunica media of the arteries. The tumor can develop at any age, with no clear gender predilection, and typically manifests as a slow-growing, asymptomatic lesion. The diagnosis is based on the histopathological study, with the use of specific staining techniques, including immunohistochemical markers. Treatment consists of complete resection of the lesion, with due safety margins. We present the case of a 57-year-old male w…

Gastric Adenomyoma: The Unexpected Mimicker.

Gastric adenomyoma is a rare benign tumor composed of epithelial structures and smooth muscle stroma. Here, we report an unusual case of gastric adenomyoma mostly composed of smooth muscle that was incidentally found during a laparoscopic intervention. On radiology, it mimicked an acquired hypertrophic pyloric stenosis in an adult patient, and pathologically it resembled a pure smooth muscle hamartoma. Complete submission of the lesion for histology was necessary to find the epithelial component and make the right diagnosis. As a mimicker of benign and malignant entities, gastric adenomyoma is

Pelvic ureteral angiomyoma mimicking urothelial carcinoma: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Angiomyoma is a rare benign tumor that can occur in any organ with smooth muscles. No one has already described an angiomyoma of the ureter. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 44 year old woman who presented with intermittent hematuria and left flank pain. The diagnosis of left ureteral tumor was evoked by the scannographic aspect. She underwent a radical nephro-ureterectomy. Final histological examination concluded to ureteral angiomyoma. DISCUSSION: Angiomyoma is rare benign smooth muscle tumor with a vascular component. Symptomatology depends on the organ that angiomyo…

Pathogenesis of infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis: recent progress.

Although infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (IHPS) is the most common condition requiring surgery in the first few months of life, its pathogenesis is not fully understood. Reviews of the recent progress in the pathogenesis of IHPS show: (1) there is increasing evidence to suggest that smooth-muscle cells in IHPS are not properly innervated; (2) because non-adrenergic, non-cholinergic nerves are mediators of smooth-muscle relaxation, it is likely that the absence of these nerves in pyloric muscle is the cause of excessively contracted hypertrophic circular pyloric muscle; (3) there are ab
