BACKGROUND: In Sweden, sick leave is taken more frequently by pregnant women than by nonpregnant women. This led us to ask if the taking of sick leave during pregnancy could possibly be explained by attitudes to sickness absence held among obstetricians working in antenatal care.
METHODS: All obstetricians (n = 45) engaged in public antenatal care and at work in May 2001 in seven hospitals in South Eastern Sweden were asked to anonymously respond to questions/statements concerning their work; 87% participated. The results were presented as percent (the median value) on a visual analog scale.

Recent studies have recorded a tendency of individuals with Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC) to continually change their choices in repeated choice tasks. In the current study we examine if this finding implies that ASC individuals have a cognitive style that facilitates exploration and discovery. The concept of competence seems to be duovocal. In one sense, competence has been viewed as abilities or attitudes leading to academic and occupational achievement. In the other, competence represents the converse of antisocial, disruptive behavior-what might be viewed as a dimension of social adjustment. We explored the deviance gender gap in relation to alcohol abuse and tobacco smoking with a national sample of adults. Sex role theory inspired the hypotheses that much of the influence of gender on deviance is conveyed through the relationship of gender to social bonds and to the experience of physical violence in childhood. Our results indicated that being female was positively associated with belief and attachment bonds that inhibited alcohol abuse and smoking and negatively associated with the experience of physical violence as a child, which promoted alcohol abuse and smoking.
