Transcranial direct current stimulation modulates ERP-indexed inhibitory control and reduces food consumption.

Food craving can be defined as the "urge to eat a specific food". Previous findings suggest impairment of inhibitory control, specifically a regulatory deficit in the lateral prefrontal circuitry that is associated with a compulsion for food. As demonstrated by three previous studies, bilateral transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) (anode right/cathode left) reduces food craving and caloric intake. We designed the present study to evaluate the neural mechanisms that underlie these effects. We replicated the design of one of these previous

Motivations for self-injury in an adolescent inpatient population: development of a self-report measure.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to develop and pilot an instrument for the assessment of self-injury in adolescent inpatients. METHODS: The Self-Injury Motivation Scale was modified for use in adolescents. Thirty-eight consenting adolescent inpatients with a history of self-injury completed the Self-Injury Motivation Scale-Adolescent version (SIMS-A) and the Self-Injury Interview (SII) to collect information about a range of factors associated with self-injury, other clinical variables and demographic details. RESULTS: The SIMS-A was acceptable to this adolescent sample and motivations

Self-regulation and inhibition in comorbid ADHD children: an evaluation of executive functions.

The relationship between executive function and comorbid diagnoses in ADHD children is examined. One hundred six children between 7 and 15 years of age are assessed using the Tower of London (TOL), a test of executive function, and the Kiddie Schedule of Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia, Present and Lifetime Version, a diagnostic interview. All children met the diagnostic criteria for ADHD. A majority of the children had comorbid anxiety disorders, mood disorders, or oppositional defiant disorder. Measures on the TOL are total move score, total initiation time, and total rule violations.

Circumcision: a consideration of some of the controversy.

This article considers the procedure known as male circumcision. This is practised throughout the world for a variety of reasons, including medically essential reasons, health promotion, health protection, cultural, religious and aesthetic. It has been estimated that approximately one-third of the male population has been circumcized. As with some other surgical interventions its use is controversial, and there are a number of ethical and moral issues that are of interest to the children's nurse. The anatomy and physiology of the prepuce is summarized and the practice of circumcision and some

Social mind representation: where does it fail in frontotemporal dementia?

We aimed at investigating social disability and its cerebral correlates in frontotemporal dementia (FTD). To do so, we contrasted answers of patients with early-stage FTD and of their relatives on personality trait judgment and on behavior prediction in social and emotional situations. Such contrasts were compared to control contrasts calculated with answers of matched controls tested with their relatives. In addition, brain metabolism was measured in patients with positron emission tomography and the [(18)F]fluorodeoxyglucose method. Patients turned out to be as accurate as controls in descri

"If I can do it I will do it, if I can't, I can't": a study of adaptive self-regulatory strategies following lower limb amputation.

PURPOSE: To explore the goal-related strategies employed by people following lower limb amputation using a framework based on the dual-process model of adaptive self-regulation. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 30 individuals with a lower limb amputation. RESULTS: Theoretical thematic analysis identified four broad assimilative/goal pursuit strategies; internal resource use, planning, technology use and help use. The most common strategies were maintaining a specific leisure activity (n=20), seeking instrumental help (n=15) and determination (n=15). Three broad categor

Positive effects of methylphenidate on social communication and self-regulation in children with pervasive developmental disorders and hyperactivity.

This report examined the effect of methylphenidate on social communication and self-regulation in children with pervasive developmental disorders and hyperactivity in a secondary analysis of RUPP Autism Network data. Participants were 33 children (29 boys) between the ages of 5 and 13 years who participated in a four-week crossover trial of placebo and increasing doses of methylphenidate given in random order each for one week. Observational measures of certain aspects of children's social communication, self-regulation, and affective behavior were obtained each week. A significant positive ef

Sources and processes of social influence on health-related choices: A systematic review based on a social-interdependent choice paradigm.

BACKGROUND: Most choices in healthcare are not made in social isolation. However, current econometric models treat patients' preferences as the sole determinants of their choices. Through the lens of sociology and medical sociology theories, this paper presents a systematic literature review of identifiable social influences on patients' choices, serving as a first step in developing a social-interdependent choice paradigm. METHODS: Following the PRISMA guideline and using nine databases, we identified the individual agents or groups involved in health-related choices, the functional content

Psychosocial boundaries of digital well-being: Exploring smartphone addiction, information overload, and sense of belonging in mobile ecosystem.

In the digital era, mobile applications have become ubiquitous in China's organizational and daily life, creating a condition in which constant connectivity coexists with social disconnection, posing critical challenges to user well-being management. This study investigates how smartphone addiction undermines sense of belonging, treated here as one key dimension of the broader digital well-being construct rather than as digital well-being in full, through the mediating role of information overload, with self-control and social media fatigue as boundary conditions. Based on a sample of 326 Chin

Neural Correlates of Social Perception in Children with Autism: Local versus Global Preferences.

The Weak Central Coherence account of autism spectrum disorders posits that individuals with ASD utilize a detail-oriented information processing bias. While this local bias is helpful in visual search tasks, ASD individuals falter in social cognition tasks where coherence is advantageous. The present study examined the neural correlates of Weak Central Coherence in ASD during visual and social processing. Fifteen ASD and sixteen typically developing children/adolescents completed a social/visual information processing task in an fMRI scanner. The stimuli consisted of human characters, compose

Social Processing in Eating Disorders: Neuroimaging Paradigms and Research Domain Organizational Constructs.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Social and environmental factors have been related to both symptom expression of disordered eating in individuals and changes in the prevalence of eating disorders (EDs) in populations. Neural differences in processing social information may contribute to EDs. This review assesses the evidence for aberrant neural responses during social processing in EDs. RECENT FINDINGS: This review examines how constructs within the social processing domain have been evaluated by neuroimaging paradigms in EDs, including communication, affiliation, and understanding of both oneself and oth

Toward a conceptual model of motive and self-control in cyber-aggression: rage, revenge, reward, and recreation.

Despite widespread public attention to cyberbullying, online aggression and victimization have received scant conceptual development. This article focuses on how opportunities for aggression are distinct online from those of offline social contexts. The model developed here is informed by a recent aggression typology, which extends the reactive-proactive distinction by distinguishing aggression based on the affective motive (appetitive vs. reactive) and the recruitment of self-control. This typology informs an analysis of psychological processes linked to individual differences that are releva

Experiences with cigarette smoking among veterans with serious mental illness: A rapid qualitative evaluation.

Tobacco use is prevalent among military veterans. Veterans with serious mental illness (SMI) smoke cigarettes at higher rates than their counterparts, which causes major health disparities. Additional efforts are needed to support smoking cessation in this population. This study was informed by the theory of planned behavior and used a rapid qualitative matrix approach to explore how attitudes, perceived behavioral control, and social norms influenced smoking among veterans with SMI to inform tailored treatment. In a sample of 20 veterans, smoking initiation was often linked to military cultur

Brain mediators of biased social learning of self-perception in social anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterized by an excessive fear of social evaluation and a persistently negative view of the self. Here we test the hypothesis that negative biases in brain responses and in social learning of self-related information contribute to the negative self-image and low self-esteem characteristic of SAD. Adult participants diagnosed with social anxiety (N = 21) and matched controls (N = 23) rated their performance and received social feedback following a stressful public speaking task. We investigated how positive versus negative social feedback altered self-evalua

Is social support sometimes a mixed blessing?

BACKGROUND: Child behavioural problems in epilepsy originate from a poorly understood interplay between intrinsic, family and social factors. METHODS: We re-analysed data from a randomized controlled trial of antiepileptic treatment in rural India, using regression analysis to find risk factors for behavioural problems. RESULTS: Parental satisfaction with social support was positively and independently correlated with child behavioural problems (P=0.03). CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest parents' interactions within their informal social support network, contrary to expectation, may increase

Participants' descriptions of social support within a multisite intervention for HIV-seropositive injection drug users (INSPIRE).

HIV-positive injection drug users (IDUs) are at risk for transmitting HIV to their sex and injection partners, and compared with non-IDUs, they have poorer access to medical care and adherence to antiretroviral therapies. Social support has been linked with decreased injection and sexual risk behaviors and slower disease progression. In this qualitative process evaluation, we explored emotional support (ie, caring, empathy), informational support (ie, information, guidance, feedback), and appraisal support (ie, information for self-evaluation or understanding) received by participants in the I

The relationship between social media addiction and metacognitions in patients with social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Mental health problems including depression, eating disorders and anxiety disorders are associated with extensive social media use. The literature has examined the relationship between social anxiety and social media addiction; however, there is a lack of studies conducted in clinical patient populations. This study aimed to investigate the role of metacognitions related to social media addiction in individuals diagnosed with social anxiety disorder (SAD). METHODS: In this cross-sectional case-control study, 99 participants aged 18-65 years with social anxiety disorder and 113 con

Stress appraisal and social support of Chinese mothers of adult children with mental retardation.

Thirty Chinese mothers of adult children with moderate to severe mental retardation were interviewed to explore the source and nature of their stress and social support. Results revealed child-related and parent-related stress specific to these mothers. The most common stressors were future planning and behavioral problems of the target offspring. Mothers received tangible, emotional, and informational support mainly from family members and training center staff. Some evidence was also found for the optimal-matching model of stress appraisal and social support. Regardless of the duration of st
