A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial of Motivation-Based Social Skills Group Treatment with Parent Training.

Despite the popularity of social skills groups, there remains a need for empirical investigation of treatment effects, especially when targeting pivotal aspects of social functioning such as initiations to peers. The goal of the present study was to conduct a randomized controlled trial of a 12-week social intervention (SUCCESS), which combined an inclusive social group with a parent education program. Twenty-five 4- to 6-year-olds with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) were randomized to SUCCESS (N = 11) or to treatment as usual (N = 14). Combining a peer group model with a parent training progr

Gay, lesbian, and bisexual adolescents: providing esteem-enhancing care to a battered population.

Suicide, HIV infection, violent victimization, homelessness, and substance use are known to affect gay (gay males, lesbians, and bisexual persons of both genders) youths at disproportionately high rates. This article explores the difficulties gay youths experience in this society specific to their sexual orientation. These difficulties become internalized by many gay youths, leading to high rates of preventable morbidities and mortalities. Stages of the "coming out" process for gay persons are reviewed within the framework of child and adolescent development. Barriers within the health care sy

Autism, bullying, and mental health: a comprehensive systematic review.

This review investigates the relationship between autism, vulnerability to bullying, and the impact of bullying on mental health for this cohort. Neurotypical social mores can be exclusionary, creating social risks for autistic people, while differences in communication and social engagement can impact peer-to-peer interaction, making autistic people more vulnerable to bullying and social discrimination. The current systematic review investigates risk factors related to the bullying of autistic people, considering both societal and individual factors. Our PRIMA guided search reported 74 studie

Exploring the impact of stigmatization on mental health in persons with liver disease: a scoping review.

Patients with liver conditions such as hepatitis B, C, and D, cirrhosis, metabolic dysfunction - associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), and metabolic dysfunction - associated steatohepatitis (MASH) frequently experience public, self, and structural stigma, which contribute to psychological distress, reduced Quality of Life (QoL), and lower engagement with healthcare. Stigma is often fueled by misconceptions linking liver disease to personal behaviour, moral failure, or contagion, disproportionately affecting marginalised populations. In this context, this scoping review examines how stigm

The relationship between physical exercise and social trust: evidence from the CGSS 2023 and the potential roles of social interaction, social support and class identity.

INTRODUCTION: Physical exercise (PE) may play an important role in enhancing residents' social trust; however, further research is needed to clarify the mechanisms underlying this association. This study examines the relationship between PE and social trust among Chinese residents and explores its potential mediating mechanisms, thereby providing empirical evidence for understanding the social psychological effects of exercise and promoting social harmony. METHODS: This cross-sectional observational study used data from the nationally representative China General Social Survey (CGSS) 2023. Af

"We Take Care of Our Young, No Matter What," Experiences of Engagement in HIV Care Among Black Mothers Parenting Dependent Children in Southwestern Pennsylvania: A Retrospective Descriptive Qualitative Study.

This retrospective descriptive study sought to explore the lived experiences of Black mothers with HIV navigating HIV medical care while parenting dependent children. Six themes were generated from the semi-structured interviews conducted with mothers ( N = 9) related to motherhood, interactions with health care systems and providers, coping, social support, HIV self-management, and HIV prevention. Findings suggested that supportive interpersonal relationships with HIV health care providers, HIV nondisclosure to family and friends, and social network support, inclusive of health care providers

Do investments in sport pay off: a systematic review and exploratory quasi meta-analysis of social return on investment in sport and physical activity.

BACKGROUND: Physical inactivity remains one of the most pressing global health concerns, contributing to millions of deaths each year and placing a considerable financial burden on public health systems through increased healthcare expenditure. Sport and physical activity have been recognised as effective tools for promoting health, strengthening social inclusion, and improving overall well-being. Traditional evaluation approaches, such as cost-benefit and cost-effectiveness analyses, have helped demonstrate economic value but often fail to capture wider social outcomes. The Social Return on I…

Deficits in the knowledge of social norms and their correlates in Alzheimer's disease.

Objective: Compared to other components of social cognition, knowledge of social norms has received less attention in the scientific literature. While social cognitive and semantic memory deficits appear early in the course of Alzheimer's disease (AD), no study has examined knowledge of social norms at earlier stages of the disease. In addition, it is unclear whether the knowledge of social norms in AD is associated with socioemotional deficits, as may be seen in the behavioral variant of frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD). Method: This study included 136 participants with amnestic mild cognitive

The Missing Pipeline: Access to Plastic Surgery Reconstruction After Mohs Surgery for Head and Neck Skin Cancers.

BACKGROUND: Mohs Micrographic Surgery (MMS) is the gold standard for minimizing damage to healthy tissue surrounding nonmelanoma skin cancer. However, extensive or complex lesions may require reconstructive plastic surgery to restore form, function, and aesthetic outcomes for patients. Social determinants of health (SDOH)-including socioeconomic status, geographic location, healthcare access, and insurance coverage-significantly shape patient outcomes. Disparities in access to MMS and subsequent reconstruction remain underexplored. This review highlights the need for Mohs and reconstructive pl

Motor, linguistic, personal and social aspects of children with Down syndrome.

A global developmental delay is expected from Down syndrome, affecting motor, cognitive, linguistic and personal-social skills. However, not always these delays are proportional; different conditions occur due to several intrinsic and extrinsic variables that must be controlled to form groups of greater homogeneity. Objective To enhance personal-social, fine motor-adaptive, gross motor and linguistic skills among children with Down syndrome and compare them with typically developing children, matched for gender, socioeconomic status and mental age, while controlling some variables that interfer

Digital inclusion and depressive symptoms among Chinese older adults: The moderating role of cognitive function.

BACKGROUND: Digital inclusion has become increasingly important for healthy aging, yet evidence on its association with depression among older adults remains limited, particularly with respect to potential cognitive heterogeneity. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the association between digital inclusion and depressive symptoms among Chinese older adults and explored whether cognitive function moderates this association, as well as potential mediating pathways. METHODS: Data were drawn from the 2020 wave of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, including 9,111 individuals aged 60

Navigating Barriers and Challenges: A Narrative Review of the Experiences of Autistic People and Their Families in Latin America.

Research on autism in Latin America has grown substantially over the past two decades; however, evidence regarding the experiences of autistic people and their families remains fragmented across countries and disciplines. This narrative review aimed to synthesize the available evidence on the experiences of autistic people and their families while navigating health, education, and social protection systems across Latin America. A literature search was conducted in PubMed for studies published between January 2000 and July 2026. The search combined the terms "autism spectrum disorder," "autism,

Mapping the social contours of social comparison orientation: Online social identification might make us more susceptible to ability comparisons.

Social comparisons, especially ability comparisons, are one of the primary mechanisms through which social media use may harm its users. Yet little is known about what motivates this activity, and how social comparison tendencies are encouraged by the social environment. Furthermore, it is not clear what individuals might try to attain by making social comparisons beyond self-evaluation. We investigated how ability-comparison orientation, the motivation to compare one's own abilities and attributes to other people, is associated with social identification with online groups and networks. Using
