Spatiotemporal dynamics of equine group formation reveal the gradual emergence of social cohesion.

Stable social relationships are essential for horse welfare, yet domestic management often involves regrouping unfamiliar individuals, potentially causing social stress. Fine-scale dynamics of social integration remain poorly quantified due to limitations of observational sampling. Using ultra-wideband real-time positioning, we tracked the development of spatial and social relationships in two newly formed equine groups (n = 19) over 2-12 months. Inter-individual distances decreased significantly, with time spent within 3 m of conspecifics increasing from 1.2 to 27.3% within two months, demons…

Social cognition in Korsakoff's syndrome: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Korsakoff's syndrome is an alcohol-related neurocognitive disorder characterized by episodic memory impairments, apathy, confabulations and poor illness-insight. This meta-analysis aimed to estimate mean effect sizes of performance in social cognition in people with Korsakoff's syndrome (KS) compared with controls. METHOD: A systematic literature search was conducted in May 2024 to identify research articles that examined social cognition in patients with KS and control groups. Weighted effect sizes (Hedges' g) were calculated for the three levels of social cognition: emo

"No more falling through the cracks": A qualitative study to inform measurement of integration of care of HIV and opioid use disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Integration of HIV- and opioid use disorder (OUD)-related care is associated with improved patient outcomes. Our goal was to develop a novel instrument for measuring quality of integration of HIV and OUD-related care that would be applicable across diverse care settings. METHODS: Grounded in community-based participatory research principles, we conducted a qualitative study from August through November 2017 to inform modification of the Behavioral Health Integration in Medical Care (BHIMC) instrument, a validated measure of quality of integration of behavioral health in primary

The reliability and validity of the Community Integration Measure in persons with traumatic brain injury.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the psychometric properties of the Community Integration Measure (CIM), a scale that assesses self-perceived quality of community integration, among persons with traumatic brain injury (TBI). METHOD: Persons (N = 279) with TBI completed the CIM, as well as other measures of community integration and quality of life, and were followed up to 15 years postinjury. RESULTS: The CIM was found to be a reliable instrument with adequate internal consistency. Validity was demonstrated in its relationship to other measures of community integration and life satisfaction. Utilit

Loss of white matter connections after severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) and its relationship to social cognition.

Adults with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) often suffer poor social cognition. Social cognition is complex, requiring verbal, non-verbal, auditory, visual and affective input and integration. While damage to focal temporal and frontal areas has been implicated in disorders of social cognition after TBI, the role of white matter pathology has not been examined. In this study 17 adults with chronic, severe TBI and 17 control participants underwent structural MRI scans and Diffusion Tensor Imaging. The Awareness of Social Inference Test (TASIT) was used to assess their ability to understand

Not just a talking shop: practitioner perspectives on how communities of practice work to improve outcomes for people experiencing multiple exclusion homelessness.

Within homelessness services recent policy developments have highlighted the need for integration and improved collaborative working and also, the need for "Psychologically Informed Environments" (PIES) in which workers are better equipped to manage the "complex trauma" associated with homelessness. Drawing on the findings of an evaluation of a multi-site development programme, this paper demonstrates how both these policy aspirations might be implemented through a single delivery vehicle (a community of practice). The paper describes how organizational, educational and psychosocial theory was

Generalized Anxiety Disorder in Canadian Adults: to what Extent Might Social Support Subdomains and Negative Social Interactions Predict Psychological Distress?

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) may involve persistent and unwarranted anxiety, fear, and rumination, combined with various somatic sympt … r each subdomain (i.e., 'guidance', 'reliable alliance', 'reassurance of worth', 'attachment', and 'social integration'), and higher NSI and K10 scores. Although no difference in psychological distress was observed between men and women with GAD, men had lower SPS-10 scores (overall and for each subdomain), while women had higher NSIs scores. A subsequent hierarchic …

Testing a model of benefit-finding and growth in youths with chronic health conditions.

BACKGROUND: The experience of benefit-finding and growth (BFG), defined as perceiving positive life changes resulting from adversity, is increasingly studied among youths with chronic health conditions (CCs). However, empirical evidence is scarce for explaining individual differences in BFG. The study aimed to test a model of BFG, including an interplay of personal and environmental factors and coping processes. METHODS: A sample of N = 498 youths (12-21 years) recruited from three German patient registries for CCs (type 1 diabetes: n = 388, juvenile idiopathic arthritis: n = 82, cystic fibro

"To Get the Patient the Best Care": A Qualitative Analysis of Community Health Worker Integration in North Carolina Federally Qualified Health Centers.

OBJECTIVE: Research suggests that community health worker (CHW) integration within clinical care teams can improve chronic disease outcomes and address health-related social needs. However, the processes by which CHWs are integrated in Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) and organizational factors enabling their success remain incompletely understood. Within the context of a national initiative sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this study assessed CHW integration across three North Carolina FQHCs with distinct patient populations, management systems, and level

There is no specific social and mental defect. According to the own experience social integration of epileptics depends upon the local economic structure. [Loneliness in Adolescents Against the Background of the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Risk Factor].

Loneliness in Adolescents Against the Background of the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Risk Factor Abstract. On the one hand, loneliness is the subjective experience of inadequate social integration and support. It is a normal phenomenon that can be dealt with in an emotional and action-oriented way within the framework of individual development. On the other hand, chronic loneliness goes hand in hand with considerable suffering, reduced quality of life, and an increased risk of psychological and somatic diseases. In the context of current social developments associated with the fragmentation of social …

Bridging divides: The role of social science in operationalising transdisciplinarity for epidemic preparedness in sub-Saharan Africa, 2012-2023.

This paper investigates the role of transdisciplinarity, social science, and communities' knowledge in epidemic and pandemic preparedness and response in sub-Saharan Africa. It addresses how social science contributions have evolved over the past decade, explores the ways in which transdisciplinary approaches have been implemented and developed and analyses how social science can help to operationalise transdisciplinarity. The research applies a conceptual framework focusing on the intersection of power, knowledge, and crisis, and adopts a definition of transdisciplinarity that emphasises mult
