Partial lesion of the serotonergic system by a single dose of MDMA results in behavioural disinhibition and enhances acute MDMA-induced social behaviour on the social interaction test.

The acute effects of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, ecstasy) on anxiety-related behaviours were studied using indices of social interaction in Dark Agouti (DA) both drug naive rats and those pretreated with MDMA (15 mg/kg i.p.) 3 weeks earlier. The functional neuroanatomy of these MDMA effects was visualised using 2-deoxyglucose imaging of local cerebral glucose use (LCMRglu), whilst MDMA-induced serotonergic neurotoxicity was measured by radioligand binding with [3H]paroxetine. Acute MDMA alone markedly decreased most typical elements of social interaction but increased adjacent lyi

Emotion-diagnostic facial features guide social gaze across screen-based and interactive contexts.

During face perception, observers preferentially attend to features that signal emotional expressions (e.g. the eye region of angry and the mouth of happy faces), reflecting their importance for inferring others' emotional states. Since previous research has demonstrated these effects primarily in highly controlled laboratory paradigms, it remains unclear whether they generalize to real-life social encounters and whether individual differences modulate visual attention across settings. To address this gap, we directly compared gaze behaviour in 69 participants across two contexts: a computeriz

Differential association of high- and low-frequency rat vocalizations with breathing and locomotion during social interactions.

Rodents, including rats, utilize vocalizations as a primary mode of social communication. While high-frequency ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) have been extensively explored in laboratory rats, low-frequency (<10 kHz) vocalizations (LFVs) were first described only recently, and it is as yet unclear whether these two types of vocalizations are driven by the same behavioral mechanisms. This study investigates the behavioral distinctions between USVs and LFVs in socially interacting rats. In line with previous studies, we found that USVs, mostly associated with social interactions, are emitted du

Social comfort and attractiveness perception: impact of prosthetics, physical disability and comfort distance on interpersonal interactions.

Derived from the disease-avoidance model is the hypothesis that people may direct negative cognitive and behavioural responses towards individuals with physical disfiguring conditions, including physical disabilities. According to the behavioral immune system, physical disability-a non-contagious physical disfigurement-may falsely activate cognitive disease-avoidance processes, resulting in prejudicial or negative responses toward individuals with physical disabilities. For the first time this hypothesis is put to the test by investigating whether ratings of attractiveness and comfort for a so

Improving Peer Interactions and Social Skills in Preschool Children With Autism Using Pivotal Response Treatment.

PURPOSE: Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT) is a naturalistic, child-led behavioral intervention grounded in applied behavior analysis that targets motivational "pivots" to promote generalized social communication. Peer interaction is a core difficulty for many preschoolers with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), yet evidence from randomized designs in group-based settings remains limited. METHODS: In a randomized controlled trial, 30 preschool children with mild to moderate ASD were assigned to either the PRT group (n = 15) or a treatment-as-usual (TAU) group (n = 15). The PRT group received 24 s

Cooperation patterns in depression: Insights from a meta-analysis of responsive and expressive social interactive paradigms.

The use of high-ecological validity social interactive paradigms to study social impairments in depression has burgeoned in recent 10 years. However, abnormal social behaviors in depression have exhibited substantial yet unexplained variations, ranging from reduced to increased cooperation. We proposed an attentional focus theory and introduced a novel classification of social interactive paradigms, distinguishing between responsive (attentional focus on others) and expressive (attentional focus on self) paradigms. This framework systematically elucidates the underlying reasons for reduced and

Spontaneous Emergence of Agent Individuality Through Social Interactions in Large Language Model-Based Communities.

We study the emergence of agency from scratch by using Large Language Model (LLM)-based agents. In previous studies of LLM-based agents, each agent's characteristics, including personality and memory, have traditionally been predefined. We focused on how individuality, such as behavior, personality, and memory, can be differentiated from an undifferentiated state. The present LLM agents engage in cooperative communication within a group simulation, exchanging context-based messages in natural language. By analyzing this multi-agent simulation, we report valuable new insights into how social no

Interactions of OXTR rs53576 and emotional trauma on hippocampal volumes and perceived social support in adolescent girls.

Oxytocin (OXT) is a neuropeptide involved in social behaviour and is sensitive to environmental influences to alter individual vulnerability or resilience to stress resulting in both negative and positive outcomes. The effects of the OXT receptor (OXTR) single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs53576 on hippocampal and amygdala structure and functions in adults are differentially associated with susceptibility to adversity and social behaviours, but this evidence is lacking in healthy adolescents. Adolescence is a developmental period characterised by neurobiological and psychosocial changes resu

Conceptual Analysis: A Social Neuroscience Approach to Interpersonal Interaction in the Context of Disruption and Disorganization of Attachment (NAMDA).

Humans are strongly dependent upon social resources for allostasis and emotion regulation. This applies especially to early childhood because humans-as an altricial species-have a prolonged period of dependency on support and input from caregivers who typically act as sources of co-regulation. Accordingly, attachment theory proposes that the history and quality of early interactions with primary caregivers shape children's internal working models of attachment. In turn, these attachment models guide behavior, initially with the set goal of maintaining proximity to caregivers but eventually pav

Oxytocin Receptor Gene Polymorphisms and Early Parental Bonding Interact in Shaping Instagram Social Behavior.

Human beings engage in multiple social interactions daily, both in person and online. There are, however, individual differences in the frequency and quality of these interactions. This exploratory study focuses on online interactions and aims to model these differences by looking at potential environmental and genetic factors. The environmental factor is the childhood parental relationship, as reported by the participants in the dimensions of the Parental Bonding Instrument (N = 57, 41 females). At a genetic level, buccal mucosa cell samples were collected to assess participants' genetic susc

Parasympathetic cardio-regulation during social interactions in individuals with obesity-The influence of negative body image.

Individuals with obesity in Western societies often face weight-related stigmatization and social exclusion. Recurrent exposure to prejudice and negative social feedback alters one's behavior in future social interactions. In this study, we aimed to investigate autonomic nervous system and affective responses to social interactions in individuals with obesity. Women and men with (n = 56) and without (n = 56) obesity participated in episodes of social inclusion and social exclusion using a virtual ball-tossing game. During the experiment, heart rate was measured and parasympathetic activity (ov

16p11.2 Deletion Syndrome Mice Display Sensory and Ultrasonic Vocalization Deficits During Social Interactions.

Recurrent deletions and duplications at chromosomal region 16p11.2 are variably associated with speech delay, autism spectrum disorder, developmental delay, schizophrenia, and cognitive impairments. Social communication deficits are a primary diagnostic symptom of autism. Here we investigated ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) in young adult male 16p11.2 deletion mice during a novel three-phase male-female social interaction test that detects vocalizations emitted by a male in the presence of an estrous female, how the male changes its calling when the female is suddenly absent, and the extent to

Mild effects of gestational stress and social reactivity on the onset of mother-young interactions and bonding in sheep.

Consequences of prenatal stress on mother-young relationships are well-documented in altricial mammals but less so in precocial mammals. In this study, we investigated the effects of unpredictable aversive events on maternal behavior and mutual mother-young recognition in pregnant ewes while accounting for modulatory effects of ewe reactivity. From a population of 120 Romane-breed ewes, we selected 20 high-responsive (HR) and 20 low-responsive (LR) ewes according to pre-mating reactivity assessed in isolation tests. Over the final third of pregnancy, 10 HR ewes and 10 LR ewes were exposed dail

Effects of Noncontingent Social Interaction on Immediate and Subsequent Engagement in Vocal and Motor Stereotypy in Children With Autism.

This study evaluated the effects of noncontingent social interaction (SI) on immediate and subsequent engagement in vocal and motor stereotypy in three children with autism. During SI, a therapist delivered continuous interaction in the form of reading aloud from a Kindle™ e-reader. Results showed that when compared with a no-interaction baseline sequence, SI decreased immediate engagement vocal stereotypy for all three participants without increasing subsequent engagement for any participant. Furthermore, SI also increased immediate engagement in motor stereotypy for one participant, decrease

Modification of the testicular function in laboratory male mice during social interactions: effect of female presence.

The count of spermatozoa in both caudal epididymides, percentage of abnormal spermatozoon heads and of mobile spermatozoa, body weight, weights of the testes and caudal epididymides were evaluated in adult inbred males (PT and CBA/Lac) kept with females for 5 days. Male mice of the same genotypes and age separated from females served as controls. In males kept with females, the weights of the testes increased in PT male mice, the percentage of rapidly mobile spermatozoa increased in CBA/Lac mice, and body weights decreased in males of both genotypes. The morphometric and spermatogenic paramete

Defective body-weight regulation, motor control and abnormal social interactions in Mecp2 hypomorphic mice.

MeCP2 is an abundant protein that binds to methylated cytosine residues in DNA and regulates transcription. Mutations in MECP2 cause Rett syndrome, a severe neurological disorder that affects approximately 1:10 000 females. Mice lacking MeCP2 have been generated and constitute important models of Rett syndrome. However, it is yet unclear whether certain physiological events are sensitive to a decrease, rather than a complete lack of MeCP2. Here we report that a Mecp2 floxed allele (Mecp2(lox)) that was generated to allow conditional mutagenesis behaves as a hypomorph and the corresponding muta

Interactive patterns of social support and individual coping strategies in melanoma patients and their correlations with adjustment to illness.

Combined patterns of social support and coping style and correlations with adjustment to cancer were investigated in early-stage melanoma patients. The authors studied 358 consecutive patients attending regular follow-up who answered standardized instruments that assess social support, coping behavior, and tumor-related distress. Regression analyses identified high active and low depressive coping behavior as stronger predictors for perceived support than sociodemographic and clinical variables. Cluster analyses yielded four coping-support patterns. High social support, combined either with ac

Sexually dimorphic effects of perinatal alcohol exposure on social interactions and amygdala DNA and DOPAC concentrations.

The hypotheses that exposure of rats to alcohol during a period roughly equivalent to the human third trimester induces changes in social interactions and neurotransmitter and DNA concentrations in the amygdala region were examined. The alcohol exposure was accomplished via an artificial rearing procedure. There were two alcohol-exposed groups (3 and 5 g/kg/day of ethanol) and two control groups (one artificially reared but not exposed to alcohol and one reared normally by dams) in all studies. Active social interactions were reduced in the male 5 g/kg/day group and increased in both female al
