Role of interconnected resources in chronic pain among people of color: a psychological network analysis approach.

Chronic pain among people of color is influenced by biological, structural, and social forces. While network models have been applied to chronic pain symptoms, research on resource disparities often isolates factors such as income, failing to account for how these systemic resources interact as a dynamic system. Integrating Conservation of Resources theory with psychological network analysis, this study examined how interconnected patterns of resource loss and gain shape chronic pain experiences among a sample of 622 adults identifying as Black, Asian, or Latinx with chronic pain. Network mode

TreeNetViz: revealing patterns of networks over tree structures.

Network data often contain important attributes from various dimensions such as social affiliations and areas of expertise in a social network. If such attributes exhibit a tree structure, visualizing a compound graph consisting of tree and network structures becomes complicated. How to visually reveal patterns of a network over a tree has not been fully studied. In this paper, we propose a compound graph model, TreeNet, to support visualization and analysis of a network at multiple levels of aggregation over a tree. We also present a visualization design, TreeNetViz, to offer the multiscale a

Autistic traits, psychosis proneness, and empathy in preadolescents: A network analysis.

Autism spectrum disorder and psychotic disorders, although clinically distinct, share overlapping characteristics, particularly in the domain of social cognition. Both autistic traits and psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) are increasingly conceptualized as existing along a continuum within the general population. Empathy, a fundamental aspect of social cognition, is commonly associated with both conditions. This study examined the relationships among autistic traits, PLEs, and empathy in a large general-population sample of preadolescents using network analysis. Data were drawn from the Adoles

Peer Influence on Motivation to Use Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Among Latino Sexual Minority Men in Miami, Florida: A Network Autocorrelation Model.

Despite the availability of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), Latino sexual minority men (LSMM) continue to experience disparities in PrEP uptake and subsequently, HIV vulnerability. Social network norms are an underutilized solution to increase PrEP uptake. We used a peer influence model (network autocorrelation model) to examine the role of social network descriptive norms (i.e., actual behaviors) surrounding PrEP use. A total of 11 sociocentric networks of 13 friends (n = 143 LSMM) were recruited into our study from 2018 to 2019 in South Florida. Most participants were in PrEP pre-contemplat

Xenophobia, ethnic community, and immigrant youths' friendship network formation.

Immigrant youth often rebuild their friendships and other social networks after arriving in a new country. The difficulties involved can threaten their psychosocial development. Formation of social networks needs to be understood within the macro sociocultural context that shapes the experience. Nonetheless, the current literature on social network formation rarely captures that context. Knowledge about immigrant youths' social network, for example, is often embedded in assimilation, ethnic identity, and adaptation literature. This paper examines how the sociocultural context enables immigrant

Social support needs of HIV-positive individuals reentering community settings from correctional facilities in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Social networks and social support are important factors in medication adherence among people living with HIV (PLWH). Social networks can provide emotional, logistic, and material support leading to increased overall engagement in care. Certain populations of PLWH may have more limited access to social support, including those reentering community settings from correctional facilities. During periods of incarceration, social connections with family and friends may be frayed, reduced, or lost. This study, conducted in South Africa, explored the role of social support during community reentry am

Is Living Alone "Aging Alone"? Solitary Living, Network Types, and Well-Being.

OBJECTIVES: When identifying older adults who may be at risk of being without necessary supports, policy makers and scholars tend to focus on those living alone, neglecting differences within that group. We examine how their social networks contribute to subjective well-being, why some of them fare better and compare their well-being to older adults coresiding with others. METHOD: Data are from the fourth wave of the Survey of Health and Retirement in Europe (N = 53,383). A network typology for older people living alone (N = 10,047) is constructed using a latent class analysis. Using ordinary

Highlighting the structural complexity of Europe's leading seafood processing hub: Building a social-ecological network with actor-network theory.

The seafood sector faces multiple challenges that threaten its contribution to food security. For developing effective governance strategies in response to those transformations, this study proposes a theoretical framework grounded in Actor-Network Theory (ANT), applied to the construction of a Social-Ecological Network (SEN), to better understand the structural complexity of the seafood sector SES in Boulogne-sur-Mer, Europe's leading seafood processing hub. Through semi-structured interviews, direct observations, and participatory workshops, we identified 227 nodes and 595 links across envir

How did Chinese older drifters re-establish social networks to mitigate their loneliness in new residential surroundings: a qualitative study in Nanjing, China.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, there has been a noticeable rise in the number of older individuals in China who have migrated to urban areas to support their adult children or care for their grandchildren. However, due to their separation from their hometowns and familiar social networks, a prevailing sense of loneliness has taken hold. Re-establishing social networks is a crucial means of alleviating their loneliness. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore how older individuals who have migrated to unfamiliar residential areas establish social connections to mitigate their feelings of loneliness

Disclosure of HIV Positive Status and Network Characteristics Among a Cohort of People Living with HIV in Western Kenya.

Disclosure of HIV serostatus is critical in managing the health and well-being of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA), yet the decision to disclose is shaped by complex interpersonal and contextual factors. The purpose of this study was to examine patterns of HIV status disclosure and social support, and to characterize disclosure networks among a cohort of PLWHA in Kenya. We conducted a cross-sectional egocentric social network analysis of 174 PLWHA and their network members to examine whether characteristics of participants (egos), their networks, and network members (alters) were associated

Understanding digital diffusion and online decision-making in public health promotion: a sequential mixed-methods study of the violence prevention charter in Canada.

Digital environments have become important settings for public health promotion, yet dissemination alone does not explain why individuals and organizations choose to adopt and act on public health information. Understanding digital diffusion requires attention to temporal patterns of adoption, the social networks through which information and influence circulate, and the contextual conditions that shape decision-making. This sequential mixed-methods single case study examined the dissemination and voluntary adoption of the Violence Prevention Charter, a principles-based public health initiativ

From social-environmental stress to core psychological dysfunction and suicidality in first-episode depressed adolescents: Network perspective.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent depression involves complex interactions among social-environmental stressors, protective psychological resources, and psychological dysfunction. Traditional models inadequately capture cross-level interactions between these domains. AIMS: We employed multilevel symptom network analysis to elucidate how childhood trauma, adolescent life events, and resilience are linked to core psychological dysfunction and suicide ideation in adolescent depression, with core psychological dysfunction defined as impairments in cognition, emotion, behavior and social functioning that cha

Characteristics of Coping with Loneliness and the Influence of Living Arrangements Among Older Adults: Findings from a Comparative Qualitative Study.

Loneliness among older adults is a well-known public health issue that became significantly apparent in the post-Covid-19 era. Our qualitative study examined and compared the perspectives of thirty-one older adults toward the factors that intensified or reduced loneliness. Five themes emerged from the analysis: emotional vs. social loneliness; the impact of health conditions on loneliness; the effect of socioeconomic status on loneliness; the role of family links; and the role of social networks . Findings show that effectively reducing loneliness requires a better understanding of how social
