Food insecurity versus public health? Social resilience.

The health problems of low-income communities and their relationship to food insecurity are a widespread problem worldwide. Understanding the complex relationship between these two conditions of food insecurity and health outcomes is the focus of this study. In addressing these issues, managing food security and adopting comprehensive strategies that consider the broader public health of the poor and socially vulnerable requires a multi-pronged approach that integrates sustainable food systems, social protection interventions, community engagement, and nutrition-specific interventions. Displaced concern: the social context of the work-disability problem.

The Social Security disability insurance program benefits were reduced in the early 1980s, in the belief that income supports induced people to stop working. The action failed to stem the number of program participants from rising, as older men with activity limitations due to chronic disease continued to withdraw from the labor force. Attention paid in this and other instances to work disability derives from the problem's social context, displacing concerns about work loss itself and its effects on workers' lives. While slow growth in the economy as a whole may be a root cause of the problem,…

An Empirical Comparison of Different Models of Active Aging in Canada: The International Mobility in Aging Study.

PURPOSE: Active aging is a concept that lacks consensus. The WHO defines it as a holistic concept that encompasses the overall health, participation, and security of older adults. Fernández-Ballesteros and colleagues propose a similar concept but omit security and include mood and cognitive function. To date, researchers attempting to validate conceptual models of active aging have obtained mixed results. The goal of this study was to examine the validity of existing models of active aging with epidemiological data from Canada. METHODS: The WHO model of active aging and the psychological mode

The Impact of Social Determinants of Health on Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease Among Adults in the United States.

Background/Objectives: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is a leading cause of chronic liver disease. It has known multifactorial pathophysiology, but the impact of social determinants of health (SDOH) on the rising prevalence of MASLD is poorly understood. We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study to examine the influence of SDOH on MASLD using nationwide data from the 2017-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) study. Methods: We identified participants with MASLD based on liver ultrasound-based controlled attenuation parameter

Semi-structured interviews were facilitated with the aid of a culturally and linguistically appropriate interpreter. An iterative, two cycle coding analytic process was completed within NVivo 11 by two coders who sought inter-rater reliability. Codes were organized into hierarchical maps and coding matrices for direct content analy

Hungry for connection: associations between social isolation, mental health, and food insecurity in regional Australian adults.

Food insecurity is increasingly recognized as a public health issue with social and psychological dimensions. However, evidence on its association with mental health and social isolation in regional Australia remains limited. A cross-sectional online survey among adults (≥18 years) living in the Illawarra and Shoalhaven regions of Australia assessed food insecurity using the 18-item USDA Household Food Security Survey Module, categorized into 'food secure' (score = 0) or 'food insecure' (score = 1+). Self-rated mental health and physical health (excellent/good vs. fair/poor) and reported diagn
