The Dynamic Nature of the Socioeconomic Determinants of Cardiovascular Health: A Narrative Review.

Despite decades of social epidemiologic research, health inequities remain pervasive and ubiquitous in Canada and elsewhere. One reason may be our use of socioeconomic measurement, which has often relied on single point-in-time exposures. To explore the extent to which researchers have incorporated dynamic socioeconomic measurement into cardiovascular health outcome evaluations, we performed a narrative review. We estimated the prevalence of socioeconomic longitudinal cardiovascular research studies that identified socioeconomic exposures at 2 or more points in time between the years of 2019 a

Incarcerated individuals and education programmes in Nigeria: A task for social workers.

Much is not known about education programmes for Nigerian incarcerated individuals. Consequently, different correctional institutions worldwide have different forms of correctional education offered to incarcerated individuals. Nigerian incarcerated individuals perceive that there are implementations of education programmes offered to them. However, little or nothing is known about how incarcerated individuals perceive these education programmes. To this end, this study ascertains the incarcerated individuals' perception of education programmes as well as the expectations of social work profes

Genodermatoses Picture: Difficulties Faced And Way Forward in Nepal.

Genodermatoses are group of genetic disorders that present with cutaneous manifestations. The exact prevalence on many of these conditions are unknown due to its rarity, need of specialized tests for diagnosis and lack of proper reporting system. Most of the patients are faced with life-long disability and associated stigma. There is a need for specialized centers for proper diagnosis of these conditions and a very elaborated yet simple reporting system in Nepal. These rare conditions should be kept in priority by the government in align with the sustainable development goals to ensure healthy

Explaining Neighbourhood Variations in the Incidence of Dengue Fever in Jeddah City, Saudi Arabia.

The rapid growth and development of cities is a contributing factor to the rise and persistence of dengue fever (DF) in many areas around the world. Many studies have examined how neighbourhood environmental conditions contribute to dengue fever and its spread, but have not paid enough attention to links between socio-economic conditions and other factors, including population composition, population density, the presence of migrant groups, and neighbourhood environmental conditions. This study examines DF and its distribution across 56 neighbourhoods of Jeddah City, Saudi Arabia, where the in

Relationships between socio-economic status and lottery gambling across lottery types: neighborhood-level evidence from a large city.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Lottery gambling participation tends to be higher among lower socio-economic status (SES) individuals, but it is unclear how this relationship differs as a function of lottery type. We estimated how the relationship between SES and lottery gambling rates varies across different types of lottery gambling: fixed-prize, progressive-prize (jackpot) and instant-win (scratch card) lottery tickets in a large Canadian city. DESIGN: Neighborhood-level lottery purchase data obtained from the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Commission were analysed in conjunction with demographic data. M

Factors Affecting Depression in Middle-Aged and Elderly Men Living Alone: A Cross-Sectional Path Analysis Model.

The main objectives of this cross-sectional study were to determine the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and depression and to estimate the mediating effects of social network satisfaction, self-esteem, and perceived health status among middle-aged and elderly men living alone, based on the reserve capacity model. Secondary data from a sample of 394 middle-aged and elderly men aged 45 years or older from the 15th Korea Welfare Panel Study (KOWEPS) were analyzed. A path analysis model was constructed to evaluate the relationship among SES, social network satisfaction, self-esteem

The problems of relative deprivation: why some societies do better than others.

In this paper, we present evidence which suggests that key processes of social status differentiation, affecting health and numerous other social outcomes, take place at the societal level. Understanding them seems likely to involve analyses and comparisons of whole societies. Using income inequality as an indicator and determinant of the scale of socioeconomic stratification in a society, we show that many problems associated with relative deprivation are more prevalent in more unequal societies. We summarise previously published evidence suggesting that this may be true of morbidity and mort

Social inequity in chiropractic utilisation - a cross-sectional study in Denmark, 2010 and 2017.

BACKGROUND: Inequity in healthcare utilisation refers to differences between groups that remain after adjustment for need for health care. To our knowledge, no previous studies have aimed to assess social inequity in chiropractic utilisation in a general population. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate social inequity in chiropractic utilisation in the general Danish population adjusted for health status as a proxy of need for chiropractic care. METHODS: A population-based repeated cross-sectional study design was used based on the Danish National Health Survey in 2010 and 2

Influence of mild pain and/or sickness caused by lipopolysaccharide-induced clinical mastitis on the time budget, space use and social behaviour of dairy cows.

Cows suffering from mammary inflammation display 'individual-centred' pain and/or sickness behaviours; however, how they interact with their surroundings (physical environment, social context) is less documented. This study examined the effects of mild mammary pain and/or sickness on cows' daily activity patterns, spatial organisation, and social behaviours (dyadic interactions and social network metrics). Twenty-seven dairy cows were studied using a repeated-measures design over six observation days, comprising three 'non-challenge days' and three 'challenge days'. On each challenge day, a su

Gender-Related Differences in Social Participation Among Japanese Elderly Individuals During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Cross-Sectional Survey.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: The health of elderly individuals is known to benefit from maintaining societal involvement and relationships with other people, such as through social participation. We aimed to determine trends in the percentage of Japanese elderly people who engaged in social participation before and during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in one municipality in Japan, and compared differences in this status by gender. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional questionnaire survey. Questionnaires were sent by mail to 3000 people aged 65 to 85 years who were randomly s

Influence of developmental social role transitions on young adult substance use.

Young adulthood (ages 18-25) is a developmental period characterized by numerous transitions in social roles. This period is also associated with increased risk of substance use and negative-consequences. Changes in developmental social role status can be related to changes in substance use. In this review, we discuss key developmental transitions and social roles associated with young adult substance use, including changes in educational status, employment, intimate partner relationships, friendships, and living status. We include important differences in substance use among groups defined by

War zone veterans returning to treatment: effects of social functioning and psychopathology.

Patients with mental illness often return for further treatment after an initial episode of care. Two processes that may contribute to the return for further treatment are the severity of patients' initial social and clinical status; and/or deterioration in their status over time, regardless of their initial status. This study examined these processes in an administrative database of war zone veterans who had received outpatient treatment from a Veterans Affairs specialized posttraumatic stress disorder program. The results suggest that both initial severity and deterioration of status contrib

Rooting for Their Own Gender: Preschoolers' Selective Preference for Winners.

Children's social preferences are influenced by the relative status of other individuals, but also by their social identity and the degree to which those individuals are like them. Previous studies have investigated these aspects separately and showed that in some circumstances children prefer high-status individuals and own-gender individuals. Gender is a particularly interesting case to study because it is a strong dimension of social identity, but also one of the most prevalent forms of social hierarchy, with males conceptualised as superior to females, by adults and children alike. Here we

The Intersections of Ethnicity, Nativity Status and Socioeconomic Position in Relation to Periodontal Status: A Cross-Sectional Study in London, England.

The role of migration as a social determinant of periodontitis has been overlooked. Intersectionality theory could help understand how immigration status interacts with other social determinants of health to engender inequalities in periodontitis. The objective of the present study was to evaluate whether ethnicity, nativity status and socioeconomic position intersect to structure social inequalities in periodontal status. Data from 1936 adults in a deprived and multi-ethnic area of London were analysed. The numbers of teeth with probing depth and clinical attachment loss were determined from

Psychosocial support and marginalization of youth-headed households in Rwanda.

This research aims to characterize the psychosocial aspects of well-being among youth-headed households (YHH) in Gikongoro, Rwanda, through examination of social support and marginalization. Data is presented on perceived availability of support from relatives, an unidentified adult, peers, and other community members and an index of social marginalization. A total of 692 interviews were completed with YHH age 13-24 who are beneficiaries of a basic needs program. Sixteen percent of youth reported there was no one they felt they could go to with a problem. In times of need, only 24% felt relati

Assessing clinical outcomes: the community functioning of persons with serious mental illness.

OBJECTIVE: The demand to measure the clinical outcomes of persons with serious mental illness in the community is growing; however, there is no consensus about how to do this task. This paper identifies challenges in measuring the outcomes of persons with serious mental illness and reviews selected instruments that measure the community functioning of this population. METHODS: Papers in peer-reviewed psychiatric journals for the years 1986 to 1996 were reviewed to select instruments that measure two or more domains of community functioning and for which data on reliability and validity have b
