Psychomedical Interventions with Transgender People in Portugal and Brazil: A Critical Approach.

This study aims to analyze biopsychomedical interventions with transgender people. For this purpose, we carried out 35 semi-structured inter … of trans people, especially in the psychomedical context of "normalization" devices. Hence, just as social structures produce and sustain transphobia, the same structures are responsible for combating it.

Social isolation impairs active avoidance performance and decreases neurogenesis in the dorsomedial telencephalon of rainbow trout.

Alterations in the social environment, such as isolating an individual that would normally live in a social group, can generate physiological responses that compromise an individual's capacity to learn. To investigate this, we tested whether social isolation impairs learning skills in the rainbow trout. We show that rainbow trout can achieve an active avoidance (AA) learning program with inter-individual variability. Moreover, c-Fos expression in dorsomedial telencephalon (Dm) correlates with the AA performance, indicating that this structure is involved in this cognitive task. Given that Dm p

A simulation analysis to characterize the dynamics of vaccinating behaviour on contact networks.

BACKGROUND: Human behavior influences infectious disease transmission, and numerous "prevalence-behavior" models have analyzed this interplay. These previous analyses assumed homogeneously mixing populations without spatial or social structure. However, spatial and social heterogeneity are known to significantly impact transmission dynamics and are particularly relevant for certain diseases. Previous work has demonstrated that social contact structure can change the individual incentive to vaccinate, thus enabling eradication of a disease under a voluntary vaccination policy when the correspon…

The utility of the Fear Survey Schedule-III: an extended replication.

This investigation examined the factor structure of the Fear Survey Schedule-III in patients with specific anxiety disorders, including patients with panic disorder, agoraphobia without panic, generalized anxiety disorder, social phobia, specific phobia, obsessive compulsive disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, and anxiety disorder NOS. Four factors were obtained, reflecting a similar structure as has been noted in other studies. However, the ability of the obtained factors to discriminate among patients with panic disorder, social phobia, and specific phobia was not high. Future directio

Validation of the German version of the Perceived Stigmatization Questionnaire/Social Comfort Questionnaire in adult burn survivors.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the factor structure, reliability, and validity of the German version of the Perceived Stigmatization Questionnaire/Social Comfort Questionnaire (PSQ/SCQ) in burn victims. METHODS: The PSQ/SCQ was answered by 139 adult burn survivors (age M=49.69, SD=15.16 years). Factor structure was examined using a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Validity was investigated through correlations between the PSQ/SCQ scales and questionnaires assessing perceived social support, burn-specific health-related quality of life, symptoms of anxiety/depression, and percent of total body s

[The comparative evaluation of accessibility of stomatological care for municipal and rural population of the Belgorod Oblast].

At the actual stage of becoming of Russian stomatology, the problem of sustainable development of rural stomatological care, as system of local formations of complex medical social nature belongs to national priorities and is considered as one of most important directions of public social policy. The stomatological health of rural population is to be considered as indicator of national stomatological health. This is confirmed by spatial structure: rural territories (inhabited territories outside cities) cover 2/3 of territory of the Russian Federation with population of 37.3 million or 1/4 of

Psychometric properties of the Social Phobia and Anxiety Inventory for Children in a Spanish sample.

The objectives of the present study were to adapt and analyze the factor structure, reliability, and validity of the Social Phobia and Anxiety Inventory for Children (SPAI-C; Beidel, Turner, & Morris, 1995) in a Spanish population. The SPAI-C was applied to a sample of 1588 children and adolescents with ages ranging from 10 to 17 years. The confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) showed a four-factor structure: Public performance, Assertiveness, Fear and avoidance/escape in social encounters, and Cognitive and psychophysiological interferences. Internal consistency was high (.90) and test-retest re

The social brain in psychiatric and neurological disorders.

Psychiatric and neurological disorders have historically provided key insights into the structure-function relationships that subserve human social cognition and behavior, informing the concept of the 'social brain'. In this review, we take stock of the current status of this concept, retaining a focus on disorders that impact social behavior. We discuss how the social brain, social cognition, and social behavior are interdependent, and emphasize the important role of development and compensation. We suggest that the social brain, and its dysfunction and recovery, must be understood not in ter

Development and validation of the Social Touch Experiences and Attitudes Questionnaire-Chinese version (STEAQ-C): How interpersonal touch relates to subclinical traits and symptoms.

Social touch has a vital role in human development and psychological well-being. However, there is a lack of measures assessing individual differences in social touch experiences and attitudes, especially under Eastern cultures. This study developed the Social Touch Experiences and Attitudes Questionnaire - Chinese version (STEAQ-C) and examined its psychometric properties with healthy young Chinese adults. In Study 1, an item pool was generated and principal component analysis (PCA) was used to identify the factor structure of the STEAQ. Study 2 recruited an independent sample and examined it

Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis of the autism diagnostic interview-revised.

The factor structure of the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R) algorithm items was examined using exploratory (EFA) and confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) factor methods. The ADI-R was completed for 1,170 youths and adults (ages 2-46). Results of EFAs indicated strong support for two-factor structure, with social communication and stereotyped behavior factors. CFAs computed in a holdout sub-sample indicated roughly equal support for the above described two-factor model and a three factor model separating peer relationships and play from other social and communicative behaviors. Cervical pathways for racial disparities in preterm births: the Preterm Prediction Study.

Purpose: Racial disparities in preterm birth have been long recognized, but the social and biological mechanisms for these differences are unclear. Our analysis had three goals: (1) to determine the relation between race and other social risk factors and cervical structure; (2) to determine whether social factors mediate the relation between race and cervical structure; and (3) to determine whether racial disparities in preterm birth (PTB) are mediated through changes in cervical structure observed earlier in pregnancy. Materials and methods: Data from the Maternal Fetal Medicine Unit network

Sociality and kinship constrain the free-mixing of pathogens in a wild mammal host population.

Pathogens rarely mix freely throughout host populations, and the presence of barriers to transmission can be detected as patterns of increased genetic isolation among pathogen isolates. Despite the importance of transmission patterns in host societies, and the risk of epizootics from wildlife disease systems, barriers to open pathogen transmission are poorly understood in wild hosts. We tested the influence of host kinship and social structure on genetic divergence among strains of Mycobacterium bovis, the causative agent of bovine tuberculosis (bTB), in a wild badger population. We measured g…

The German Version of the Gaze Anxiety Rating Scale (GARS): Reliability and Validity.

OBJECTIVE: Fear of eye gaze and avoidance of eye contact are core features of social anxiety disorders (SAD). To measure self-reported fear and avoidance of eye gaze, the Gaze Anxiety Rating Scale (GARS) has been developed and validated in recent years in its English version. The main objectives of the present study were to psychometrically evaluate the German translation of the GARS concerning its reliability, factorial structure, and validity. METHODS: Three samples of participants were enrolled in the study. (1) A non-patient sample (n = 353) completed the GARS and a set of trait questionn

Systematic review of social network analysis in adolescent cigarette smoking behavior.

BACKGROUND: Social networks are important in adolescent smoking behavior. Previous research indicates that peer context is a major causal factor of adolescent smoking behavior. To date, however, little is known about the influence of peer group structure on adolescent smoking behavior. METHODS: Studies that examined adolescent social networks with regard to their cigarette smoking behavior were identified through online and manual literature searches. Ten social network analysis studies involving a total of 28,263 adolescents were included in the final review. RESULTS: Of the 10 reviewed stu

Solitary eating is linked to reduced brain volume in cognitively unimpaired individuals and possible future cognitive decline.

Social isolation and poor nutrition are recognized risk factors for cognitive decline in older adults. However, the relationship between solitary eating, brain structure, and dietary patterns remains unclear. This study investigated the relationship between solitary eating, brain structure, and diet in healthy older Japanese adults. A total of 727 cognitively normal participants (mean age 70.32 years) underwent MRI and dietary assessments. Results showed that individuals who frequently eat alone have reduced brain volumes in regions critical for cognitive function, particularly the medial temp

The gene "degrees of kevin bacon" (dokb) regulates a social network behaviour in Drosophila melanogaster.

Social networks are a mathematical representation of interactions among individuals which are prevalent across various animal species. Studi … define a novel genetic entry point to study social network structure and thereby establish gene-to-social structure relationships. While dokb sequence homology is exclusive to Diptera, we anticipate that dokb-associated molecular pathways could unveil convergent neural mechanisms of social behaviour that apply in diverse animal species.
