Childhood adversity and borderline personality disorder: a focus on adolescence.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article explores recent research in the field of childhood exposure to trauma and the development of borderline personality disorder in adolescence. RECENT FINDINGS: Adolescence is a critical period of development. Exposure to trauma, specifically sexual abuse, prior to and during puberty has specific implications for personality development and heightens risk for borderline personality disorder. Elevated symptom levels in adolescence are likely to decline across adulthood, but social and vocational impairments remain. Impulsivity, difficulties in emotion regulation, a

Hematological Malignancy Specific Patient-Reported Outcome Measure (HM-PRO): Construct Validity Study.

BACKGROUND: Validity is the ability of an instrument to measure what it claims to measure. It means the degree to which the empirical evidence supports the trustworthiness of interpretations based on the calculated scores. The hematological malignancy (HM) specific patient reported outcome measure (HM-PRO), is a newly developed instrument for use in daily clinical practice as well as in research. This study, provides the evidence for construct validity of the HM-PRO, specifically focusing on the convergent and divergent validity compared to the other established instruments used in hematology.

Protocol for the development and validation of a patient-reported experience measure (PREM) for people with hearing loss: the PREM-HeLP.

INTRODUCTION: Hearing loss is a common chronic health condition and adversely affects communication and social function resulting in loneliness, social isolation and depression. We know little about the patient experience of living with hearing loss and their views on the quality of the audiology service. In this study, we will develop and validate the first patient-reported experience measure (PREM) to understand patients' experiences of living with hearing loss and their healthcare interactions with audiology services. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We will develop the PREM in three phases: (1) deve

Psychometrics of the Pragmatic Rating Scale for School-Age Children With a Range of Linguistic and Social Communication Skills.

Purpose Social communication or pragmatic skills are continuously distributed in the general population. Impairment in these skills is associated with two clinical disorders, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and social (pragmatic) communication disorder. Such impairment can impact a child's peer acceptance, school performance, and current and later mental health. Valid, reliable, examiner-rated observational measures of social communication from a semistructured language sample are needed to detect social communication impairment. We evaluated the psychometrics of an examiner-rated measure of so

Rumination in suicide-loss survivors: Psychometric evaluation of the Persian version of the Utrecht Grief Rumination Scale (UGRS).

BACKGROUND: Survivors of suicide loss (SLSs) represent a unique group that faces a heightened risk of developing complications related to grief, often characterized by ruminating on the reasons behind their loved one's suicide, which can affect their supportive social networks. Grief rumination is considered a transdiagnostic risk factor for mental health diseases, including prolonged grief. We evaluated the psychometric and reliability of the Iranian Utrecht Grief Rumination Scale (UGRS) among SLSs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study, conducted between 2023 and 2024, investiga

Building Family Capacity: supporting multiple family members to implement aided Language modeling.

Family-centered capacity-building practices have been shown to benefit children and families. However, limited research explores these practices for children who use augmentative and alternative communication. This study explored an intervention to teach family members to implement an Aided Language Modeling (ALM) strategy across natural activities at home. A single case multiple probe design was used to evaluate the intervention with five family members and a girl with autism. Results showed the intervention increased family members' percentage of high-fidelity ALM strategy use and rate of AL

The qualitative similarity hypothesis.

Evidence is presented for the qualitative similarity hypothesis (QSH) with respect to children and adolescents who are d/Deaf or hard of hearing. The primary focus is on the development of English language and literacy skills, and some information is provided on the acquisition of English as a second language. The QSH is briefly discussed within the purview of two groups of cognitive models: those that emphasize the cognitive development of individuals and those that pertain to disciplinary or knowledge structures. It is argued that the QSH has scientific merit with implications for classroom

Machine learning approaches to identifying neurodevelopmental disorders using social media data: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), often emerge in early childhood and can significantly impact social, academic, and emotional functioning. Early identification is critical to improving long-term outcomes, yet traditional diagnostic processes are time-consuming and resource-intensive. As social media becomes an integral part of daily life, user-generated content offers a novel source of behavioral and linguistic data that may support early detection. Advances in artificial intelligence (A

A Paradigm for Understanding Adolescent Social Anxiety with Unfamiliar Peers: Conceptual Foundations and Directions for Future Research.

Adolescents who experience social anxiety concerns often display symptoms and impairments when interacting with unfamiliar peers. For adolescent clients, reducing symptoms and impairments within these interactions comprises a key treatment target within exposure-based therapies for social anxiety. Recent work on mechanisms of change in exposure-based therapies highlights the need for therapeutic exposures to simulate real-world manifestations of anxiety-provoking social situations. Yet, researchers encounter difficulty with gathering ecologically valid data about social interactions with unfam

Translation and assessment of encultured meaning of the Multi-Dimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support in Diné bizaad (Navajo) using community-based participatory action research methods.

INTRODUCTION: Perceived social support is a psychological construct that is used to describe the 'perception of adequacy' of the support being provided by a person's social network. Higher perceived social support has been linked to multiple benefits across numerous studies over the past several decades and among multiple populations. The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) is a 12-item scale to assess the construct of perceived social support. The instrument has been translated to approximately 35 languages and dialects, but it has rarely been translated into tribal lan

The Japanese Adaptation of the Reading the Mind in Films Test: Differentiating Autism Spectrum Disorder From Depression Using an Ecologically Valid Social Cognitive Task.

Cognitive tests that reflect the complexity of real-world social interactions are essential for autism spectrum disorder (ASD)-related clinical assessment and research. This study developed and adapted a Japanese version of the Reading the Mind in Films (RMF) test, which assesses mind-reading ability through dynamic, multisensory, and context-rich stimuli. Participants included 23 autistic adults, 39 typically developing adults, and 40 adults with depression as a clinical control. RMF scores in the autistic group were significantly lower than in both the typically developing and depression gro

Error Estimation of Signed Networks Based on Expectation-Maximization Algorithm.

Data obtained from experiments and surveys in human social systems are inevitably influenced by systematic measurement errors, and network data are no exception. Despite the prevalence of error in social network data, current research often lacks rigorous estimation of its expected precision, which may lead to biased conclusions. Signed networks, which encode both positive and negative relationships, constitute an important component of network science, and conducting measurement error analysis on them can substantially enhance the accuracy of social network analysis. This paper proposes a set
