Transjugular patent ductus arteriosus occlusion in a cat with a peripheral vascular occlusion device.

A five-month-old, intact female domestic shorthair cat was presented to a specialty referral hospital for evaluation of a patent ductus arteriosus. Transvenous embolization of the defect was achieved with a commercially available peripheral vascular plug. The use of vascular plugs for the closure of patent ductus arteriosus has been validated in dogs, yet literature for its use in cats is lacking. The product and procedural details of the device are described.

Natural history of subaortic stenosis in 166 dogs (1999-2011).

INTRODUCTION: Subaortic stenosis (SAS) is one of the most common congenital cardiac diseases in dogs. The objective of this study was to provide survival times on a large population of dogs with SAS and to propose a redefined pressure gradient (PG) scale to include a mild, moderate, severe and very severe disease group. ANIMALS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dogs were divided into four groups based on the Doppler-derived PG across the stenosis. Disease severity was defined as follows: mild = PG < 50 mmHg; moderate = PG range 50-80 mmHg; severe = PG range 80-130 mmHg; and very severe = PG > 130 mmHg.

Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy in dogs.

Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) is an inherited myocardial disease seen in dogs, cats, and humans. A common entity in Boxers and the related English bulldog, the disease is characterized by fatty or fibrofatty replacement of the myocardium, ventricular arrhythmias, and the potential for syncope or sudden death. In some individuals, concomitant left ventricular involvement results in systolic dysfunction and a progression to congestive heart failure. The clinical and pathological characteristics of ARVC share many similarities in dogs and humans, and Boxers serve as an im

Heart rhythm characterization during sudden cardiac death in dogs.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Inherited or acquired arrhythmic disorders and cardiac disease have been associated with sudden cardiac death (SCD) in dogs. The electrical mechanism related to death in most of these cases is unknown. This retrospective study aimed to describe arrhythmic events in dogs that experienced SCD during Holter monitoring. ANIMALS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nineteen client-owned dogs that experienced SCD during Holter examination were included. Clinical records from a Holter service database were reviewed, and both the rhythm preceding death and the dominant rhythm causing SCD

Computed tomography diagnosis of a caval-azygos communication in a dog with cor triatriatum dexter.

An 18-month-old Springer Spaniel was presented for investigation of ascites, exercise intolerance and suspected cor triatriatum dexter. Division of the right atrium into two separate chambers by an anomalous perforated membrane consistent with cor triatriatum dexter was confirmed during echocardiography. However, a routine agitated saline contrast (bubble) study yielded results that could not be explained by the congenital heart defect alone. Computed tomography angiography was performed and revealed a dilated ventral internal vertebral venous plexus and a short, dilated vessel in the midlumba

Long-term relief of obstruction in a dog with double-chambered right ventricle using combined cutting balloon and high-pressure balloon dilation.

A 4-month-old intact female Golden Retriever dog was diagnosed with double-chambered right ventricle (DCRV) without infundibular stenosis, tricuspid valve dysplasia, and subsequent severe right atrial enlargement and was referred for combined cutting balloon and high-pressure balloon dilation. On presentation, these diagnoses were confirmed, and the peak systolic pressure gradient across the DCRV obstructive lesion assessed by continuous wave Doppler interrogation was 80 mm Hg. The obstructive lesion within the mid-right ventricle had a diameter of 6 mm through which blood flowed from the prox

Balloon valvuloplasty of valvular pulmonary stenosis in a neonatal foal.

In a 1-day old filly with a loud heart murmur, transthoracic echocardiography revealed right ventricular hypertrophy associated with severe pulmonary valvular stenosis and a transvalvular pressure gradient (between right ventricle and pulmonary artery) of 125 mmHg. Computed tomographic angiography confirmed the finding, with no evidence of other relevant concurrent abnormalities. Balloon valvuloplasty was performed using a single balloon technique. The foal recovered well from anaesthesia. Following the procedure, the right ventricle-pulmonary artery transvalvular gradient decreased to 38 mmHg

Hypereosinophilic syndrome with cardiac infiltration and congestive heart failure in a cat.

Hypereosinophilic syndrome is an uncommon disorder in the cat. It is a heterogeneous group of conditions defined by a persistent hypereosinophilia associated with organ damage directly attributable to tissue hypereosinophilia. A seven-year-old castrated domestic shorthair cat presented to the emergency service for dyspnea. Initial physical examination identified the presence of a grade III/VI systolic left parasternal murmur with no gallop or arrhythmia. A snap N-terminal-pro hormone brain natriuretic peptide was abnormal, and a point-of-care ultrasound revealed mild pleural effusion, scant pe

Surgical embolectomy in a cat with cardiogenic aortic thromboembolism.

A seven-year-old, spayed female, domestic longhair cat was referred for management of a sudden aortic thromboembolism (ATE). Echocardiography showed hypertrophic cardiomyopathy with severe left atrial enlargement. Ultrasonography of the abdominal aorta confirmed a large thrombus at the level of the aortic trifurcation, involving both iliac arteries. Considering the recent onset and bilateral involvement of the iliac arteries, the cat underwent emergent surgical embolectomy (SE) of the aortoiliac embolus. A standard caudal celiotomy was performed and the abdominal aorta was identified. Vessel l

Obstructive right ventricular outflow tract myxosarcoma in an adult dog.

An 8-year-old female spayed German Shepherd cross was presented for acute onset of respiratory distress. Four days before presentation, the owner noticed a reduced appetite and reluctance to move. Clinical examination identified muffled lung sounds and a left base, diamond-shaped systolic murmur graded 4/6. Echocardiography identified pleural and pericardial effusion, ascites and a myxoid mass (39 mm/18.9 mm) obstructing the right ventricular outflow tract and interfering with the pulmonary valve function. Given the poor prognosis, the dog was euthanatised, and a postmortem examination was per

Giant pericardial-occupying compressive primary cardiac hemangiosarcoma in a cat.

Hemangioarcoma in the cat is an infrequently diagnosed tumor, and cardiac involvement is rare. We report a previously healthy, 8-year-old, domestic shorthair cat with acute collapse associated with pericardial effusion and cardiac tamponade. Following pericardiocentesis and removal of 15 mL of fluid, the cat improved rapidly. A massive, space-occupying, intrapericardial tumor adhered to and compressing the right atrium and ventricle was detected by echocardiography. Approximately 5 weeks following initial presentation, bicavitary effusion and tachypnea developed, and the cat was euthanized. Ne

Branch pulmonary artery stent placement in a dog with heart base neoplasia.

A 7-year-old French bulldog was presented for evaluation of cardiac neoplasia. Two-dimensional transthoracic echocardiography revealed a mass on the base of the heart, compressing the right pulmonary artery. Computed tomography exam confirmed that a surgical approach to remove the mass would not be viable. Stent placement in the right pulmonary artery was performed to relieve external compression caused by the neoplasia. When surgery is not feasible, pulmonary artery stenting could be one aspect of a multidisciplinary approach to palliative management of heart base neoplasia.

Two-dimensional echocardiographic measures of left ventricular dimensions agree with M-mode measurements in dogs.

INTRODUCTION: Clinicians measure left ventricular dimensions in dogs from both M-mode and two-dimensional images. Little information currently exists as to whether these two methods provide measurements similar enough to be interchangeable. ANIMALS: The animals included in this study are 206 client-owned dogs: 68 healthy, 105 with myxomatous mitral valve disease, 33 with other cardiac or extracardiac disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Investigators measured left ventricular diastolic and systolic dimensions from archived M-mode and two-dimensional images obtained from the right parasternal shor

Use of vertebral left atrial size for staging of dogs with myxomatous valve disease.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: The American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) guidelines suggest that pimobendan should be initiated in dogs which meet all criteria of stage B2 myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD): murmur intensity ≥ 3/6, left atrial-to-aortic ratio ≥ 1.6, normalized left ventricular internal diameter in diastole ≥ 1.7, and vertebral heart size > 10.5. Recently, a new radiographic index for left atrial enlargement, vertebral left atrial size (VLAS), was proposed. The objective of the present study was to evaluate whether VLAS is useful in staging MMVD and if it can d
