Development of a Neural-Fuzzy-Based Variable Admittance Control Strategy for an Upper Limb Rehabilitation Exoskeleton.

Upper limb motor dysfunction resulting from stroke requires effective rehabilitation solutions; however, current exoskeletons are limited by single-input control, inadequate adaptation to various rehabilitation stages, and restriction to one limb. This study presents the development of a three-degree-of-freedom upper limb rehabilitation exoskeleton with three core innovations: (1) a neuro-fuzzy adaptive admittance control architecture that integrates human-robot interaction force and joint angular velocity as dual inputs for real-time damping adjustment, enabling accurate capture of dynamic mo

Artificial neural network model development of blended biodiesel.

The need to find a more sustainable and environment friendly biofuel has driven a lot of experimental studies in past few decades. But, the cost of physical testing and resource constraint has limited the capability to find better and low emission fuels. This study aims to bridge this gap by developing an artificial neural networks (ANNs) model that can predict the emission (i.e., nitrogen oxide (NOx), carbon oxides (COx), hydrocarbons (HC)) of biodiesel and its blends based on the composition of feedstock and its additives, physiochemical properties and engine working conditions. The ANN mode

Artificial intelligence in food and nutrition science: a paradigm-centric review of computational frameworks and system-level integration.

Precision nutrition on a global scale necessitates an understanding of food not as static collections of so-called macronutrients but rather as dynamic and heterogeneous biochemical matrices. These complex non-linear interactions between food composition, gastrointestinal digestion and the human microbiome are difficult to capture using traditional empirical experimental methods. This review articulates a paradigm-based framework that reconceptualizes artificial intelligence (AI) in food and function science, from generic industrial applications to the computational modeling of physiological a

Multimodal imaging evaluation of the entheses in spondyloarthritis.

Multimodal imaging has become an important component in the evaluation of entheses in rheumatology. Clinical examination provides information on local tenderness and symptoms; however, these findings show variable correlation with structural or inflammatory alterations at the enthesis and should thus be complemented by imaging. Within the last decades, the availability, quality and diversity of imaging modalities have increased notably. Ultrasound (US) enables assessment of soft-tissue inflammation, structural abnormalities, and vascularization. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) allows visualiz

Fulminant cerebral infarction of anterior and posterior cerebral circulation after ascending type of facial necrotizing fasciitis.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a soft tissue infection that is characterized by extensive necrosis of the subcutaneous fat, neurovascular structures, and fascia. Cerebral infarction after facial necrotizing fasciitis has been rarely reported. A 61-year-old woman with diabetes was admitted with painful swelling of her right cheek. One day later, she was stuporous and quadriplegic. A computed tomographic scan of her face revealed right facial infection in the periorbital soft tissue, parotid, buccal muscle, and maxillary sinusitis. A computed tomographic scan of the brain revealed cerebral infarction

[Third dimension and craniofacial plastic surgery].

Via an inverse approach to that of the Renaissance painter's treatment of perspective, the third dimension must be obtained from flat radiological information in order to reconstitute (virtually and materially) the volumes which it analyses. These images are analysed mathematically by computer. The applications are and will be numerous, especially in cranio-maxillo-facial surgery. Surgical simulation, without claiming to assess their soft tissue repercussions, section and virtually reposition bone segments: symmetrization and correction of hypotrophy are easy to visualize; computer-assisted su

Adjustable Single-Osteotomy Fibular Free Flap for Anterior Mandibular Defects in Irradiated Head and Neck Cancers-A Case Series.

Objective: Reconstructing the anterior mandible in patients with irradiated and contracted soft tissues remains challenging despite advances in computer-assisted design and three-dimensional printing. Unpredictable soft-tissue changes reduce the effectiveness of these technologies. This paper explores an alternative using a single-adjustable-osteotomy fibula flap technique. Methods: A retrospective study was performed on patients with anterior segmental mandibular defects due to recurrent tumors, secondary reconstruction, or osteoradionecrosis and previously received radiotherapy who represent

A Case Study on the Effects of Foam and Seat Pan Inclination on the Deformation of Seated Buttocks Using MRI.

OCCUPATIONAL APPLICATIONSWe investigated the effects of seat pan inclination and foam on the deformation of the seated buttocks using an upright MRI system. From observations among four healthy males, we found that soft tissue deformation under the ischial tuberosity (IT) could be reduced not only by using a soft cushion, but also by decreasing the shear force on the seat pan surface. These results suggest that soft tissue deformation could be used as an objective measure for assessing seating discomfort and injury risk, by accounting for the effects of both contact pressure and shear. We also

Imaging of the rotator cuff and biceps tendon.

Several different imaging techniques are available for evaluating the rotator cuff and biceps tendon. The common disorders of impingement, rotator cuff tears and biceps tendonitis are discussed along with the role which the various imaging modalities can play in establishing their diagnosis. Plain radiographs can be helpful particularly with a history of trauma but give limited information on the soft tissues. Ultrasound is a useful and inexpensive means of assessing the rotator cuff and biceps tendon but has a number of limitations and varying reports on its accuracy. Computed tomography (CT)

Imaging basilar skull fractures in the horse: a review.

Due to the complex nature of the anatomy of the equine head, superimposition of numerous structures, and poor soft tissue differentiation, radiography may be of limited value in the diagnosis of basilar skull fractures. However, in many horses radiographic changes such as soft tissue opacification of the guttural pouch region, irregular bone margination at the sphenooccipital line, attenuation of the nasopharynx, ventral displacement of the dorsal pharyngeal wall and the presence of irregularly shaped bone fragments in the region of the guttural pouches are suggestive of a fracture of the skul

Adaptive Feeding Robot With Multisensor Feedback and Predictive Control Using Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average-Feed-Forward Neural Network: Simulation Study.

BACKGROUND: Eating is a primary daily activity crucial for maintaining independence and quality of life. Individuals with neuromuscular impairments often struggle with eating due to limitations in current assistive devices, which are predominantly passive and lack adaptive capabilities. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to introduce an adaptive feeding robot that integrates time series decomposition, autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA), and feed-forward neural networks (FFNN). The goal is to enhance feeding precision, efficiency, and personalization, thereby promoting autonomy for indiv

Longitudinal Stability of Common TMJ Structural Disorders.

The longitudinal course of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disc displacement (DD) and degenerative joint disease (DJD) has never been conclusively described with magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography, respectively. This 8-y observational study's objective was to assess the longitudinal stability of DD and DJD among 401 subjects. The Validation Project provided baseline measures; follow-up was performed in the TMJ Impact Project. With magnetic resonance imaging, 2 radiologists rendered a consensus diagnosis of normal/indeterminate, DD with reduction, or DD without reduction. Computed

Iliac screw fixation using computer-assisted computer tomographic image guidance: technical note.

BACKGROUND: Iliac screw fixation is a powerful tool used by spine surgeons to achieve fusion across the lumbosacral junction for a number of indications, including deformity, tumor, and pseudarthrosis. Complications associated with screw placement are related to blind trajectory selection and excessive soft tissue dissection. OBJECTIVE: To describe the technique of iliac screw fixation using computed tomographic (CT)-based image guidance. METHODS: Intraoperative registration and verification of anatomic landmarks are performed with the use of a preoperatively acquired CT of the lumbosacral s

Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma - A rare cause of pleural effusion.

Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma is a malignant neoplasm arising from cartilaginous bone or soft tissue. It is uncommon yet devastating. Our patient was a 21-year-old man who presented with pleuritic chest pain and weight loss. His chest radiograph showed left pleural effusion. His pleural effusion analysis was consistent with exudative pleural effusion. Tuberculosis workup was negative. Pleural fluid cytology did not yield malignant cells. Subsequently, his computed tomography of thorax showed left rib sclerotic lesion with soft tissue component. Biopsy of the soft tissue eventually confirmed the d

A Finite element model of tactile flow for softness perception.

Touch is an extremely dynamic sense. To take into account this aspect, it has been hypothesized that there are mechanisms in the brain that specialize in processing dynamic tactile stimuli, in a way not too dissimilar from what happens for optical flow in dynamic vision. The concept of tactile flow, related to the rate of expansion of isostrain volumes in the human fingerpad, was used to explain some perceptual illusions as well as mechanisms of human softness perception. In this paper we describe a computational model of tactile flow, and apply it to a finite element model of interaction betw
