Hair zinc concentration was determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry in 308 normal newborn infants and 199 normal infants aged one to twelve months. Hair zinc concentration declined from 204 micrograms/gm at birth to 112 micrograms/gm at age eight months, and then rose to 144 micrograms/gm at age twelve months. Diaper rash was significantly associated with reduced hair zinc, and infants with the least hair had lower zinc levels than infants with the most hair. The plasma magnesium (Mg) concentrations of 582 unselected diabetic outpatients and 140 control subjects were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. PURPOSE: To report polyethylene as an unusual cause of corneal foreign body.
METHODS: Two patients presenting with ocular complaints showed a transparent foreign body on the cornea on careful slit-lamp examination. The foreign bodies were removed and subjected to chemical analysis by Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry. Treatment was given in the form of topical antibiotics and tear substitutes.

The contents of the metals Ca, Mg, Zn, Cu, Cr, and Mn in 7 different entities of tumors of the sellar region were evaluated by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Increased values of Mg in coincidence with high Ca contents are explained by the competition of Mg to Ca and its potency to inhibit mineralization. One-hundred and five impacted and erupted sound teeth were analysed for lead content by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The results showed that lead accumulated before eruption, presumably soon after the onset of dentine formation. The accumulation in dentine was systemic, without any contribution from the oral environment. To better understand DNA photodamage, several nucleosides were studied by femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. A 263-nm, 150-fs ultraviolet pump pulse excited each nucleoside in aqueous solution, and the subsequent dynamics were followed by transient absorption of a femtosecond continuum pulse at wavelengths between 270 and 700 nm. A transient absorption band with maximum amplitude near 600 nm was detected in protonated guanosine at pH 2.
