(1) Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the shape of the spine curves in the cervical, thoracic and lumbar sections of children that practice selected sports. (2) Methods: The body posture of the examined children was assessed using the digital photography method, i.e., the Moiré method. Selected parameters characterizing the curvature of the spine (the Alpha, Beta and Gamma angles, the size of kyphosis in the thoracic spine and the size of lordosis in the lumbar spine) were analyzed. (3) Results: The study of the body posture using the Moiré method allowed for the assessment of

An analysis of literature on the methods of assuming a sitting position and the results of our own research indicated the need to search for biomechanical parameters and existing relationships that would enable a description of sitting body posture. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the relationship between the alignment of the body of sternum and sacrum and the changes in the thoracic and lumbar spine curvatures in children. The study involved 113 subjects aged 9-13 years. A planned simultaneous measurement of the angle parameters of the alignment of the body of sternum and sacrum relat

Osteogenesis imperfecta is a genetic disorder of type I collagen. Although multiple genotypes and phenotypes are associated with osteogenesis imperfecta, approximately 90% of the mutations are in the COL1A1 and COL1A2 genes. Osteogenesis imperfecta is characterized by bone fragility. Patients typically have multiple fractures or limb deformity; however, the spine can also be affected. Spinal manifestations include scoliosis, kyphosis, craniocervical junction abnormalities, and lumbosacral pathology. The incidence of lumbosacral spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis is higher in patients with ost

Complicated high myopia is one of the leading causes responsible for the disablement in the children associated with visual impairment especially when it is combined with other pathological conditions and abnormalities among which are disorders of the musculoskeletal system. In the present study, we for the first time examined visually impaired schoolchildren (n=44) who suffered from high myopia complications making use of the computed optical topographer for the evaluation of the state of their vertebral column. The control group consisted of 60 children attending a secondary school. The stud

The improvement of antenatal management and surgical techniques has greatly increased the survival rate of infants with spina bifida. More of these women are reaching adulthood and reproductive age and therefore could become pregnant. Pregnancy complications depend on the kind of spina bifida and subject's condition. We report a case of woman with a severe kyphoscoliosis, that progressively affects lung capacity until 32 weeks of gestation, when she underwent caesarean section. These patients deserve careful obstetric care, genetic counselling and urological, obstetric, neurological and anaesthe

Bent spine, i.e. camptocormia appears in several disease. Segmental dystonia is one of these. A few cases benefiting from botulinum toxin therapy have been described in the literature. We describe a case, in which segmental dystonia is associated with camptocormia, causing the patient to use a wheelchair. The condition fulfilled the criteria of both clinical and electromyographic dystonia. Administration of botulinum toxin into rectus abdominus muscles was started. The response was good: the patient was able to walk in a fairly erect posture assisted by a rolling walker.

Polymyositis-like syndrome characterized by proximal muscle weakness and elevation of muscle enzymes may be a presenting manifestation of hypothyroidism. Camptocormia, which can be caused by myopathy of the paraspinal muscles, is an involuntary truncal flexion of the thoracolumbar spine while standing or walking. Among various neuromuscular disorders, hypothyroidism has not been reported in the literature as a cause of camptocormia. This is the first report of polymyositis-like syndrome with camptocormia caused by hypothyroidism.

INTRODUCTION: Adult spinal deformity (ASD) often necessitates high-grade osteotomies to achieve adequate correction and durable arthrodesis, yet guidance on adjunctive interbody cage use remains fragmented. This systematic review aims to aggregate and critically appraise clinical and radiographic outcomes of interbody cage use in Schwab grade 3 and 4 osteotomies to provide evidence-based guidance for complex ASD correction.
METHODS: We conducted a PROSPERO-registered systematic review and meta-analysis (CRD420251068532) of comparative studies to evaluate perioperative characteristics of ASD p

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by cardinal motor signs: 4-6 Hz resting tremor, rigidity, and bradykinesia. In addition, 3-18% of PD patients have camptocormia, an abnormal forward flexion of the thoracolumbar spine, which may have a negative impact on patients' quality of life. Different possible treatments have been suggested for such a condition, but no one is resolutive. This study aims to define the possible impact of DBS, with selective targeting on the dorsal-lateral region of the STN, on the sagittal balance of patients affected by PD. Among all patients that have undergone D

INTRODUCTION: The main objective of all the sagittal compensating mechanisms is to allow a subject to stand and keep an erect position.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The cascade of compensating mechanisms appears progressively with the increasing amount of imbalance of the spine until compensation is no longer possible. The loss of lumbar lordosis can be considered as the initiating event of sagittal imbalance. This loss of the normal lordosis pushes the C7 plumb line forward.
RESULTS: The assessment of sagittal balance has to include to be complete: a parameter measuring the global balance of the

The etiology of the adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) remains unknown. Variations in the sagittal profile of the spine between the early stage scoliotic and non-scoliotic pediatric patients have been shown. However, no quantitative study has shown the link between the sagittal profile and 3D deformity of the spine. 126 right thoracic scoliosis with spinal and 3D reconstructions were included. A 2D finite element model was developed for each of the sagittal curve types without any deformity in the frontal or axial planes. Physiological loadings were determined from the literature and were a

Back pain is a common reason for consultation in primary healthcare clinical practice, and has effects on daily activities and posture. Relationships between the whole spine and upright posture, however, remain unknown. The aim of this study was to identify the relationship between each spinal curve and centre of pressure position as well as velocity for healthy subjects. Twenty-one male subjects performed quiet stance in natural position. Each upright posture was then recorded using an optoelectronics system (Vicon Nexus) synchronized with two force plates. At each moment, polynomial interpol

Although various forms of nonoperative treatment have been applied to spinal deformities over the centuries, it was the development of the original Milwaukee brace, a cervicothoracic-lumbosacral orthosis (CTLSO), by Blount and Schmidt in the middle 1940s that heralded a new era of nonoperative treatment and that has led to much of the success we enjoy with nonoperative treatment today. Furthermore, as our understanding of the natural history of scoliosis has grown and our recognition of the specific genetic, curvature-related, or neurophysiological factors that predispose patients to curvature

Spinal traction is a physical intervention that provides constant or intermittent stretching axial force to the lumbar vertebrae to gradually distract spinal tissues into better alignment, reduce intervertebral disc (IVD) pressure, and manage lower back pain (LBP). However, such axial traction may change the normal lordotic curvature, and result in unwanted side effects and/or inefficient reduction of the IVD pressure. An alternative to axial traction has been recently tested, consisting of posteroanterior (PA) traction in supine posture, which was recently shown effective to increase the inte
