Complex repetitive behavior: punding after bilateral subthalamic nucleus stimulation in Parkinson's disease.

"Punding" is the term used to describe a stereotyped motor behavior characterized by an intense fascination with repetitive purposeless movements, such as taking apart mechanical objects, handling common objects as if they were new and entertaining, constantly picking at oneself, etc. As a phenomenon with both impulsive and compulsive features, the phenomenology of punding is currently being questioned. In order to investigate the pathophysiology of this phenomenon, we screened a population of Parkinson's disease (PD) outpatients who underwent subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN DB

Field study of the efficacy of three types of nose net for the treatment of headshaking in horses.

Thirty-six owners of seasonally headshaking horses took part in a trial to compare the effectiveness of three types of nose net, a traditional cylindrical net (full net) and two forms of larger mesh nets which cover only the nostrils and dorsorostral muzzle (half nets). Baseline data relating to the overall severity of the problem and 18 specific behaviours describing the nature of the problem were recorded on a check sheet by the owners. A within-subjects repeated measures design experiment, with each net used for a week before reassessment, was then used to assess the effect of the nets on t

[Late form with psychiatric presentation of Wilson's disease, with pseudo-compulsive stereotyped movements. Neuro-radiological correlations].

Wilson's disease rarely starts after the third decade and may present with misleading psychiatric signs. We observed a 39-year-old white male who developed hysterical behaviour followed by frank delusional psychosis. Secondary neurological symptoms like astasia and dyarthria were misinterpreted as drug-induced. Despite a treatment with D-penicillamine and zinc sulfate there was further deterioration with anarthria and pseudo-compulsive stereotypies. These latter signs cleared after five months, whereas astasia and abasia remained the same and MRI imaging showed further deterioration characteri

Rett's syndrome in the west of Scotland.

Nineteen girls with characteristic features of Rett's syndrome, including normal initial development, regression at about 12 months of age, repetitive hand movements, and severe mental handicap were studied. This represents an estimated incidence of one in 30 000 live births (one in 15 000 girls) in the west of Scotland. Although the children were often initially considered to be autistic, they did not conform to this diagnosis as they made good personal contact within the limits of their mental development. The developmental regression was sometimes falsely attributed to vaccination. Each chi

Stereotypy of psychogenic nonepileptic seizures.

Psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES) are defined as paroxysmal episodes in which epileptic semiology features are manifested, without the characteristic concomitant electrical discharges seen in epileptic seizures. Although many studies have dealt with semiologic classification of PNES, most of the studies did not raise the question of consistency of PNES in the same patient. The aim of this study was to measure the degree of consistency of PNES among individual patients. We retrospectively reviewed medical records and video- EEG records of all adult patients who underwent monitoring in ou

A comparative study of primary and secondary stereotypies.

This study compares primary stereotypies (repetitive, self-stimulating, and seemingly nonsensical movements that can occur within typically developing children) and secondary stereotypies (those occurring within autistic or mentally retarded children). Utilizing a retrospective chart review from 1995 to 2010, the current study compares primary and secondary stereotypies by the application of a classification system that organizes the movement by its type (motor only, phonic only, mixed) and complexity. In addition, it investigates other parameters associated with the movements such as duration

Spontaneous paroxysmal circling behavior in the ci2 rat mutant: epilepsy with rotational seizures or hyperkinetic movement disorder?

Circling, turning, rotating, spinning, wheeling, and cursive hyperkinesia are all synonymous terms used to describe the active movement of an animal in a circular direction. Circling behavior can be evoked by unilateral electrical and chemical stimulation or lesions of various brain sites, but can also occur after systemic drug administration or spontaneously in normal animals or mutant rodents. In humans, stereotypic body rotation can occur as a distinctive entity of generalized and focal epilepsy, and may be due to involvement of the striatum. We have previously described a Lewis rat mutant

Follow-up of children with language delay and features of autism from preschool years to middle childhood.

Eighteen children (13 males, five females) who had severe developmental language delay/disorder and some features of autism (although insufficient in severity and combination to meet ICD-10 diagnostic criteria for childhood autism) at preschool age (Time 1; mean age 4 years 4 months) were followed up 4 years later (Time 2; mean age 8 years 7 months). At the initial assessment the diagnostic dilemma was how much the social communication impairments and behavioural problems were secondary to the language problem and how much they constituted a genuine case of a pervasive developmental disorder.

Perinatal exposure to glyphosate-based herbicides induced neurodevelopmental behaviors impairments and increased oxidative stress in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus in offspring.

Glyphosate is the organophosphate pesticide most widely used in the world. Recent studies correlate exposure to glyphosate and the emergence of neurodevelopmental disorders. Therefore, it was objective to propose a rat model of perinatal exposure to glyphosate-based herbicides (GBH) to study associated neurodevelopmental disorders. Behavioral aspects and brain pathways were assessed in the prepubertal phase. For this, maternal treatment occurred throughout the entire gestation period (from GD0) until weaning on postnatal day 22 (PND 22). Control group received oral gavage with 5 mL/kg of salin

How does parkinson's disease begin? Perspectives on neuroanatomical pathways, prions, and histology.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a multisystem disorder with involvement of the peripheral nervous system. Misfolding and aggregation of α-synuclein is central to the pathogenesis of PD, and it has been postulated that the disease may originate in olfactory and gastrointestinal nerve terminals. The prion-like behavior of α-synuclein has been convincingly demonstrated in vitro and in animal models of PD. Lewy-type pathology have been detected in peripheral organs many years prior to PD diagnosis, and 2 independent studies have now suggested that truncal vagotomy may be protective against the disorde

Repeating patterns: Predictive processing suggests an aesthetic learning role of the basal ganglia in repetitive stereotyped behaviors.

Recurrent, unvarying, and seemingly purposeless patterns of action and cognition are part of normal development, but also feature prominently in several neuropsychiatric conditions. Repetitive stereotyped behaviors (RSBs) can be viewed as exaggerated forms of learned habits and frequently correlate with alterations in motor, limbic, and associative basal ganglia circuits. However, it is still unclear how altered basal ganglia feedback signals actually relate to the phenomenological variability of RSBs. Why do behaviorally overlapping phenomena sometimes require different treatment approaches-f

Atypical Rett syndrome with selective FOXG1 deletion detected by comparative genomic hybridization: case report and review of literature.

Rett syndrome is a severe neurodegenerative disorder characterized by acquired microcephaly, communication dysfunction, psychomotor regression, seizures and stereotypical hand movements. Mutations in methyl CpG binding protein 2 (MECP2) are identified in most patients with classic Rett syndrome. Genetic studies in patients with a Rett variant have expanded the spectrum of underlying genetic etiologies. Recently, a deletion encompassing several genes in the long arm of chromosome 14 has been associated with the congenital Rett-syndrome phenotype. Using array-based comparative genomic hybridizat

Tardive Dystonia.

Tardive dyskinesia is a movement disorder that develops after exposure to dopamine receptor blocking agents. Less well-appreciated are other, more recently described tardive syndromes that are phenomenologically distinct from tardive dyskinesia and respond to different treatments. Patients may simultaneously have more than one tardive syndrome. Major subtypes of tardive syndromes include tardive dyskinesia, characterized by orobuccolingual, truncal, or appendicular, choreiform movements; tardive dystonia, characterized by sustained, stereotyped muscle spasms of a twisting or turning character;

Effect of zinc in animal models of anxiety, depression and psychosis.

The role of zinc (Zn) in anxiety, depression and psychosis was studied in rodents. Zn was administered at doses of 15 and 20 mg/kg intraperitoneally for 7 days. Both doses of Zn reduced the immobility time and increased the swimming time in the modified forced swim test. In the elevated plus maze test, increases in the number of open arm entries and time spent in the open arms were observed with both doses of Zn. In the amphetamine (1 and 2 mg/kg subcutaneously) induced locomotor activity test both doses of Zn produced reduction in the total movement time, mean velocity and stereotypic movemen

Haloperidol-loaded polysorbate-coated polymeric nanocapsules increase its efficacy in the antipsychotic treatment in rats.

Haloperidol is an antipsychotic drug associated with the development of movement disorders. We evaluated the effect of its nanoencapsulation on its pharmacological activity and motor side effects. Haloperidol-loaded polysorbate-coated nanocapsules (H-NC) showed nanometric size, negative zeta potential and low polydispersity indices and high encapsulation efficiency (>95%). Rats received a single dose of H-NC (0.2mg/kg ip) and four doses of D,L-amphetamine, AMPH (8.0mg/kg ip), injected every 3h (0, 3, 6 and 9h). The AMPH-induced stereotyped movements were quantified in the intervals of 15 min a

Neuroethological approach to frontolimbic epileptic seizures and parasomnias: The same central pattern generators for the same behaviours.

The aim of this report is not to make a differential diagnosis between epileptic nocturnal seizures and non-epileptic sleep-related movement disorders, or parasomnias. On the contrary, our goal is to emphasize the commonly shared semiological features of some epileptic seizures and parasomnias. Such similar features might be explained by the activation of the same neuronal networks (so-called 'central pattern generators' or CPG). These produce the stereotypical rhythmic motor sequences - in other words, behaviours - that are adaptive and species-specific (such as eating/alimentary, attractive/

What can we learn from animal models of focal hand dystonia?

Focal hand dystonia (FHd) is a disabling disorder of hand control characterized by a loss of inhibition and involuntary co-contractions of agonists and antagonists that can develop in motivated, productive individuals performing highly repetitive, intensive hand tasks. It is our hypothesis that FHd can result from aberrant learning. We summarize three behavioral animal models (Nancymae aotus owl monkeys and Sprague Dawley rats) that provide evidence supporting aberrant learning as one origin of FHd. Hand task behaviors that increase the risk for repetitive strain injury-FHd include: attended,

Is faciobrachial dystonic seizure a misnomer? A case report of atypical leg-predominant tonic-dystonic attacks in LGI1-associated encephalitis.

BACKGROUND: Antibody‑mediated encephalitis due to leucine‑rich glioma‑inactivated 1 (LGI1) is a frequent cause of immune‑responsive paroxysmal motor phenomena in older adults. The disorder is commonly associated with brief, stereotyped involuntary movements traditionally labeled faciobrachial dystonic seizures (FBDS). However, the "faciobrachial" descriptor may underrepresent the true phenotypic spectrum. We report a case of LGI1‑associated autoimmune encephalitis presenting with leg‑predominant tonic-dystonic attacks, expanding the recognized clinical presentation and highlighting variability
