Clomipramine treatment for stereotype and related repetitive movement disorders associated with mental retardation.

The efficacy of the serotonin uptake inhibitor clomipramine in the treatment of stereotyped and related repetitive behavior disorders was tested in individuals with severe and profound mental retardation. A double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial of clomipramine was associated with significant reductions in the frequency and intensity of stereotyped behavior and teacher ratings of stereotypy, hyperactivity, and irritability as well as increased adaptive engagement and decreased staff intervention for nontargeted behavior problems. Adverse effects occurred in 3 of the 10 subjects. Of t

Effects of noncontingent sensory reinforcement on stereotypic behaviors in a child with posttraumatic neurological impairment.

A multiple baseline design across instructional sessions was used to evaluate the therapeutic effects of noncontingent sensory reinforcement on stereotypic behaviors (grabbing and mouthing objects) displayed by an 8-year-old child with posttraumatic neurological impairment. The programmed sensory reinforcement was oral stimulation made accessible to the child by allowing her to chew on a designated and acceptable stimulus. Treatment was associated with a decrease in both object-grabbing and object-mouthing behaviors to near-zero levels. At a 6-month follow-up, the behaviors were absent without

Opioid influence on some aspects of stereotyped behavior induced by repeated amphetamine treatment.

Rats were administered repeated IP injections of dl-amphetamine (AMPH) according to a chronic escalating dose schedule (three doses per 24 hr, for four days, two days or one day). Animals treated for four days exhibited a diminished oral stereotypy in response to a challenge of 12 mg/kg AMPH or 2 mg/kg SC apomorphine (APO), 72 hr after withdrawal. Pretreatment with 2 mg/kg IP naloxone (NAL) during the period of chronic AMPH administration prevented the reduction in oral stereotypy induced by AMPH or APO. No differences were detected among the mean of stereotypy scores from the different treatm

Chlorpromazine effects on stereotypic and conditioned behaviour of severely retarded patients--a pilot study.

An attempt was made to test the hypothesis that anti-psychotic medication may induce adaptive changes by suppressing stereotypic behaviour. Six profoundly retarded residents were selected for the presence or absence of stereotypic behaviour and tested in a placebo controlled, cross-over study. Chlorpromazine caused noticable drowsiness in all subjects over the 2-week drug period. Body rocking was significantly suppressed in the wards, but other clinical behaviours were not influenced by the drug. Performance on an operant conditioning task was significantly impaired in most subjects. Body rock

In vivo electrochemical evidence for an enkephalinergic modulation underlying stereotyped behavior: reversibility by naloxone.

The effect of the enkephalin pentapeptide analog (WY 42,896) on amphetamine-induced stereotypy was studied in male, albino rats. WY 42,896 significantly inhibited amphetamine-induced stereotypy. The inhibition of the head-bobbing and sniffing components was significantly reversed by naloxone. Disinhibition of the rearing components by naloxone reached borderline significance. In vivo electrochemical measurements in rat caudate showed that WY 42,896 inhibited both basal and amphetamine-induced dopamine release. This inhibition was prevented by naloxone. These data show an enkephalinergic-dopami

Development of school-age children's stereotypic attitudes toward mentally retarded children.

The developmental changes in the structure of attitudes toward mentally retarded children in elementary-school-aged students were investigated. Four orthogonal factors characterized their responses: General Negative Evaluation, General Positive Evaluation, Likeability, and Unhappiness. For the most part, increased age was associated with a decrease in negative stereotypes and an increase in a specific stereotype. The results were discussed in terms of contradictory findings in previous attitudinal research.

Single-cell sequencing reveals transcriptional and immunogenetic diversity in stereotyped chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) comprises immunogenetically defined stereotyped subsets of patients with distinct B-cell receptor (BcR) immunoglobulin features and clinical trajectories, yet the molecular pathways underlying subset-specific differences remain incompletely characterized. To resolve disease-relevant heterogeneity obscured in bulk analyses, we performed integrated single-cell transcriptomic and immunogenetic profiling of 48 557 malignant and bystander immune cells from 13 treatment-naïve primary patient samples representing poor-prognostic subsets #1 and #2 and the indolent su

Breaking stereotypes or making compromises? gender, income, and the unequal landscape of medical specialty choice.

BACKGROUND: Medical specialty choice shapes both physician identity and healthcare systems. Specialty choices are influenced not only by academic interest and aptitude but also by gender norms and socioeconomic pressures. While these dynamics are well documented in high income settings, fewer studies examine how perceived gender roles and income expectations jointly influence specialty preferences in LMICs contexts. METHODS: This sequential mixed methods study combined a cross-sectional online survey with semi structured interviews. The quantitative phase included 155 medical students (respon

Beyond the stereotype: a comparison of concussion assessments and 3D-MOT performance in individuals with and without ADHD.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder that exhibits significant symptom overlap with concussion. While ADHD diagnosis is often considered a confounding factor in concussion evaluation, its impact on performance on standard assessment tools is not well understood. This cross-sectional analysis examined 45 participants with a self-reported doctors' diagnosis of ADHD and 45 matched controls. Performance on the King-Devick (KD) test, SCAT6 symptoms, Vestibular Oculomotor Screening (VOMS), and 3D-MOT was first compared between ADHD and control parti

Emotional Stereotypes of Crime Victims: A Cross-Cultural Replication of the Emotional Victim Effect in Turkey.

This study aims to examine societal expectations regarding the emotional responses of crime victims and to reveal the cultural and gender-based patterns of the emotional victim effect (EVE) in the Turkish context. The EVE literature shows that victims are perceived as more credible when they display emotional expressions consistent with normative expectations; however, these findings are largely based on Western samples. The present study directly replicated the paradigm developed by Wrede and Ask (2015) with a Turkish sample and examined how cultural differences shape the structure of emotion

Clinician Perceptions of the Stereotype Content Describing People With Eating Disorders: A Weight-Inclusive Perspective.

OBJECTIVE: Eating disorder stigma is influenced by body size in ways that may cultivate a particularly disadvantageous therapeutic milieu. The present study applied the stereotype content model to investigate the perceptions of mental health providers toward people with eating disorders and a range of eating behaviors, and how these perceptions vary by body size. METHOD: Using a within-participants design, mental health providers (N = 361) were presented with brief descriptions of 12 groups and asked questions about their perceived warmth and competence: People with anorexia nervosa, bulimia

Do housing-induced changes in brain activity cause stereotypic behaviours in laboratory mice?

Abnormal repetitive stereotypic behaviours (SBs) (e.g. pacing, body-rocking) are common in animals with poor welfare (e.g. socially isolated/in barren housing). But how (or even whether) poor housing alters animals' brains to induce SBs remains uncertain. To date, there is little evidence for environmental effects on the brain that also correlate with individual SB performance. Using female mice from two strains (SB-prone DBA/2s; SB-resistant C57/BL/6s), displaying two forms of SB (route-tracing; bar-mouthing), we investigated how housing (conventional laboratory conditions vs. well-resourced

Sound elicits stereotyped facial movements that provide a sensitive index of hearing abilities in mice.

Sound elicits rapid movements of muscles in the face, ears, and eyes that protect the body from injury and trigger brain-wide internal state changes. Here, we performed quantitative facial videography from mice resting atop a piezoelectric force plate and observed that broadband sounds elicited rapid and stereotyped facial twitches. Facial motion energy (FME) adjacent to the whisker array was 30 dB more sensitive than the acoustic startle reflex and offered greater inter-trial and inter-animal reliability than sound-evoked pupil dilations or movement of other facial and body regions. FME track

Uncovering the effectiveness of anthropomorphic communication on the country-of-origin stereotypes from the perspective of psychological elements.

With the development of social media, interactive activities such as anthropomorphic communications are more accessible and popular. The country-of-origin(COO) stereotype is one of the most important factors which influences individuals' attitudes toward brands. This study aims to investigate the feasibility and validity of anthropomorphic communication via social media on COO stereotypes in international competitions. Experimental results indicate that the strategy of using anthropomorphic communication has positive effects for developing countries, but not the same for developed countries; t

Warmer Individuals Get More Help: The Influence of Stereotypes and Empathy on Moral Decision-Making.

The processing of moral decision-making is influenced by both cognitive and emotional systems, making it worth exploring exactly how each plays a role in the process of individual moral decision-making. In this study, 160 participants with either high or low empathy traits (80 each, as determined by the Interpersonal Response Index Inventory) completed a moral decision-making task regarding whether to help others (stereotyped as high warmth-high competence, high warmth-low competence, low warmth-high competence, low warmth-low competence) at the expense of themselves. The intent was to explore

Effects of Physical Exercise Interventions on Stereotyped Motor Behaviours in Children with ASD: A Meta-Analysis.

Studies have reported that physical exercise reduces maladaptive stereotyped motor behaviours (SMB) in children with ASD, but these intervention studies vary in design and outcome. The present systematic review and meta-analysis included 22 studies, involving 274 children with ASD, to quantify the effect of exercise on SMB and its potential moderators. Multi-level modelling revealed a large overall effect, Hedges' g = 1.16, with significant heterogeneity across participant, treatment, and study levels. Further, a more appropriate model using between-case estimation for within-subject effects t

Evidence of stereotyped contact call use in narwhal (Monodon monoceros) mother-calf communication.

Narwhals (Monodon monoceros) are gregarious toothed whales that strictly reside in the high Arctic. They produce a broad range of signal types; however, studies of narwhal vocalizations have been mostly descriptive of the sounds available in the species' overall repertoire. Little is known regarding the functions of highly stereotyped mixed calls (i.e., biphonations with both sound elements produced simultaneously), although preliminary evidence has suggested that such vocalizations are individually distinctive and function as contact calls. Here we provide evidence that supports this notion i

Recognition of emotion from subtle and non-stereotypical dynamic facial expressions in Huntington's disease.

Emotion recognition deficits in Huntington's disease (HD) are well-established. However, most previous studies have measured emotion recognition using stereotypical and intense facial expressions, which are easily recognized and artificial in their appearance. By contrast, everyday expressions are often more challenging to recognize, as they are subtle and non-stereotypical. Therefore, previous studies may have inflated the performance of HD patients and it is difficult to generalize their results to facial expressions encountered in everyday social interactions. In the present study, we teste
