BACKGROUND: Leukaemia is a malignant neoplasm characterized by clonal proliferation of white blood cells within the bone marrow. Despite an increase in the white blood cell count, the leukaemic leukocytes are non-functional. The oral complications arising in leukaemic patients can be attributed to the direct and indirect effects of immunosuppressive chemotherapy.
METHODS: This case report describes severe maxillary and mandibular necrotizing stomatitis and osteomyelitis in a young female patient after chemotherapy for acute leukaemia. On physical examination, the patient presented malnourishe…

Major aphthous stomatitis (Sutton's disease) is a clinical variant of recurrent aphthous stomatitis differentiated by its high level of morbidity. It is generally found in areas of non-keratinized mucosa and is characterised by the presence of necrotic giant ulcers accompanied by intense pain. While this pathology has been the subject of molecular studies, its etiopathogenesis is still unknown. The most widely accredited hypothesis is that it represents an immune mechanism, namely the immunological response of mucosa with antigenic anomalies, modulated by altered local reactivity and influence…

The leukocytes from sixty patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis were tested for histamine release in response to environmental and food antigens. Eighteen patients (30 percent of the population studied) were atopic, and this history of respiratory allergy was confirmed by an in vitro histamine release assay. The nonatopic patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis had a significantly higher incidence of in vitro histamine release to foods than did control subjects. The leukocytes from twenty-three patients (38 percent) released histamine to food antigens. Patients eliminated foodstuffs …

Vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) causes clinical disease in livestock that mimics Foot-and-Mouth Disease, necessitating its status as a reportable pathogen to the World Organization for Animal Health. Given the importance of accurate classification for epidemiological surveillance, this study aims to update VSV taxonomic organization using whole-genome sequence criteria to better monitor disease dynamics. Using phylogenetic analysis and the Species Demarcation Tool (SDT), we analyzed pairwise identity across publicly available sequences, constructing a rooted maximum likelihood tree to cluster…

BACKGROUND: The need to investigate safe and innovative clinical therapies is highlighted by the fact that chronic recurrent aphthous ulcers, also known as recurrent aphthous stomatitis, are a very prevalent but poorly understood mucosal condition that significantly affects patients' quality of life with frequent recurrences. Although aphthous ulcers have received a lot of clinical and research attention, treatment is usually symptomatic. Despite a plethora of therapeutic options for oral ulcers in Unani medicine, there is little empirical evidence to support them. In this case report, we desc…

Oral aphthous ulcer in Behçet's disease (BD) and recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a cause of discomfort for many patients, especially in cases refractory to colchicine or azathioprine. Roflumilast, a phosphodiesterase-4 (PDE4) inhibitor, may be effective for treating refractory oral ulcers (OUs) in BD and RAS, especially in regions where apremilast is unavailable. In this study, we investigated the efficacy and safety profile of low-dose roflumilast for refractory OUs in BD and RAS. This single-center, single-arm, retrospective observational study included 46 patients screened from the o…

BACKGROUND: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is an idiopathic inflammatory condition of the oral mucosa, affecting approximately one-fifth of the population. Oxidative stress (OS) has recently been suggested to contribute to the etiopathogenesis of RAS. Thiols are potent antioxidants that play vital roles against oxidation. This study aimed to determine how OS contributes to the pathophysiology of RAS by analyzing the thiol/disulfide parameters.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted with a total of 67 participants (31 patients with clinically diagnosed RAS and 36 healthy, age- …

Canine chronic ulcerative stomatitis (CCUS) is a spontaneously occurring, painful, and often debilitating condition of the oral cavity, with a suspected immune-mediated component. The response to pharmacological treatment is generally poor, thus the need to identify more effective medical therapies for this condition. This article describes a prospective clinical trial that was designed to evaluate the efficiency of a combination of cyclosporine and metronidazole in managing CCUS. The hypothesis was that a combination of cyclosporine and metronidazole would effectively minimize clinical signs …

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a common disease in the oral cavity characterized by recurrent ulcers (RU). Usually, these cause acute pain without definitive treatment. The present study determines the efficacy of non-thermal plasma (NTP) for treating RU. NTP is applied to the patient's RU using a radiofrequency generator connected to a point reactor. The power density applied to the ulcer is 0.50 W/cm2, less than 4 W/cm2, which is the maximum value without biological risk. Each patient received two treatments of three minutes each and spaced 60 min apart at a distance of 5 mm from the…

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a common chronic disease in the oral mucosa that affects about 20% of the population. It is characterized by solitary or multiple, recurrent, small ulcers with erythematous haloes and yellow/gray floors. RAS can be managed through a wide variety of preventative measures and therapies, intending to reduce ulcer pain, stimulate ulcer healing, and/or prevent ulcer recurrence. First-line treatment options include topical medications in the form of corticosteroids (triamcinolone acetonide), anti-inflammatory drugs (amlexanox), antibiotics (doxycycline), and an…

AIM: To determine the impact of recurrent aphthous stomatitis on quality of life related to oral health, and then to determine the relationship between the observed impact and lesions characteristics.
METHODS: In this prospective case-control study (n=62), patients were divided into a healthy group (people with no history of ulcers) and recurrent aphthous stomatitis (people who had an active ulcer at study entry). The latter were also evaluated when the lesion disappeared (remission stage). We record the quality of life in all groups using the impact profile of oral health in its abbreviated …

BACKGROUND: Stomatitis is inflammation of the oral mucosa. Angiopoietin-like protein 4 (ANGPTL4) has pleiotropic functions both anti-inflammatory and pro-inflammatory properties. In the present study, we tested whether there is a correlation between increased ANGPTL4 expression and inflammation in stomatitis mice and the mechanisms involved.
METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, the oral mucosa of mice was burned with 90% phenol and intraperitoneal injection of 5-fluorouracil to establish the model of stomatitis mice. The pathological changes of stomatitis mice were observed by H&E staining of …

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a common oral disease characterized by intermittent eruptions of painful oral ulcerations. Hippocrates first described aphthous stomatitis with the Greek word aphthi meaning "to inflame." RAS affects 10-20% of the population with the incidence being the highest among young adults. The peak age of onset is between 10 and 19 years of age. It has three main forms of presentation. The most common being minor RAS, along with the major and herpetiform types. Many local and systemic factors are associated with RAS pathogenesis. The main concern with oral aphthae…

INTRODUCTION: Recurrent aphthous ulcers are common but poorly understood mucosal disorder. Local and systemic conditions, genetic, immunological, and microbial factors may play a role in the pathogenesis of recurrent aphthous ulceration (RAS). Different aetiologies and mechanisms might be involved in the aetiopathogenesis of aphthous ulceration. Cytokines are thought to play an important role and high levels of interleukin (IL)-6, a pro-inflammatory cytokine, have been detected in the circulation of ulcer tissue. The purpose of the present study was to investigate if polymorphisms of IL-6 gene
