The PAUL Suit(©) : an experience of ageing.

BACKGROUND: An ageing population worldwide makes it increasingly important that health students understand issues that elderly people face and can provide empathic care to them. CONTEXT: This teaching department in an isolated rural setting developed an interprofessional learning session to assist health students to understand issues of functional loss and social isolation that can affect elderly people. INNOVATION: The Premature Ageing Unisex Leisure (PAUL) Suit(©) was developed as part of a 1-day learning session for undergraduate health students - including students of medicine, nursing a

Attitudes and intentions of future health care providers toward abortion provision.

CONTEXT: Induced abortion is one of the most common procedures performed among women in the United States. However, 87% of all counties had no abortion provider in 2000, and little is known about the attitudes and intentions of future health care providers, including advanced clinical practitioners, regarding abortion provision. METHODS: During March 2002, first- and second-year students in health sciences programs (i.e., medicine, physician assistant and nursing) at the University of Washington were anonymously surveyed. Univariate, bivariate and multivariate analyses were used to determine

First year allied health student transition to a regional university.

OBJECTIVE: Students from regional and remote backgrounds are more likely to stay and work in regional and remote locations. Health students transition and retention at university impacts the retainment of a competent rural health workforce. This study aimed to examine the perceptions of allied health students as they reflected upon their first six weeks at university and identified strategies which enhanced these experiences. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. Surveys were administered to students who then completed a reflection exercise. Data were analysed using Pearson correlation coefficient

Teaching about vulnerable populations: nursing students' experience in a homeless center.

Cultural competence is not limited to ethnicity, religion, or race but is inclusive of vulnerable groups, such as the homeless. The complex health and social issues related to homelessness requires educational instruction that supports students' ability to address and care for the multidimensional elements that surround this group. Exposure to homeless populations provides nursing students with increased awareness of the issues related to health disparities, while promoting introspective reflection on one's values and beliefs. To increase student exposure to working with homeless clients, a se

RN-to-MSN students' attitudes toward women experiencing homelessness: A focus group study.

When health professionals, including RNs, have negative attitudes toward women experiencing homelessness, they create barriers to services. It is incumbent on nursing faculty to develop curricula that address homelessness and associated stereotypes, as well as to prepare students to provide safe and appropriate care to the homeless population. The aim of this qualitative study was to examine the attitudes of RN-to-MSN students toward mothers living with their children in a transitional shelter. A convenience sample of 10 students enrolled in a community health nursing course at a university in

Integrating quality improvement, evidence-based practice, and knowledge translation into a health Sciences masters' programme: a mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, the emphasis on quality improvement (QI), evidence-based practice (EBP), and knowledge translation (KT) in the education of health professionals has increased. Efforts have been made to identify commonalities between quality improvement and implementation science. However, the development of curricula that encompass these approaches remains poorly understood. Consequently, this study examines the implementation of a novel teaching module in quality improvement and evidence-based practice, designed for health sciences master’s students. The objective was to explore

Association between condom use and perspectives on contraceptive responsibility in different sexual relationships among sexually active college students in China: A cross-sectional study.

China has increasing incidence of unplanned pregnancies among college students these years. Increasing students' sense of responsibility to protect sexual partners may help reduce the rate of unplanned pregnancies.A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to students from 3 colleges in Sichuan, China. Among them, 559 of male students and 267 of female students were included in this study. The questionnaire collected participants' characteristics, usage of condom, and investigated male and female students' perceptions of who should be responsible for contraception use.We found that rela

Intention to use digital mental health solutions: A cross-sectional survey of university students attitudes and perceptions toward online therapy, mental health apps, and chatbots.

BACKGROUND: Globally, the high prevalence of mental disorders among university students is a growing public health problem, yet a small minority of students with mental health problems receive treatment. Digital mental health solutions could bridge treatment gaps and overcome many barriers students face accessing treatment. However, there is scant evidence, especially in South Africa (SA), relating to university students' use of and intention to use digital mental health solutions or their attitudes towards these technologies. We aim to explore university 2students attitudes towards and percep

An implementation science study of a campus-based drug checking service at a Canadian university.

OBJECTIVES: Research shows that in countries around the world, unregulated drug use and disorders are more prevalent amongst youth and young adults compared to general adult populations. Further, youth and young adults, including those in post-secondary settings, are increasingly experiencing harms from the global unregulated drug supply. Yet, population-specific harm reduction strategies are limited. This implementation science study explored the reach, effectiveness, adoption, implementation, and maintenance of a post-secondary campus-based drug checking service that was facilitated through

Factors underpinning international student mental well-being: a UK and China survey.

BACKGROUND: International students experience a high mental health burden and face barriers to accessing and sustaining support, yet domain-level stress frameworks provide limited guidance on which specific stressors should be prioritised. OBJECTIVE: To prioritise item-level stressors associated with perceived stress and mental well-being among international students using machine-learning models, and to evaluate cross-site transportability via external testing between Chinese students in the UK and international students in China. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional online survey of 481

Stakeholder Perceptions of the School Vaccination Program in Special Schools for Adolescents With Intellectual and Developmental Disability.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents with intellectual and developmental disability (IDD) are reported to have lower uptake of routine vaccines than their peers. Little research has explored stakeholders' perceptions and support of school-based vaccinations for this population in NSW, Australia. METHODS: Focus groups and interviews were conducted with four stakeholder groups involved in the vaccination program in special education schools in New South Wales, Australia: students with IDD, parents, education staff, and health professionals. RESULTS: Stakeholders mostly supported vaccinating adolescents wit

Putting theory into practice: Designing a justice-oriented engaged learning module to foster global citizenship skills among students.

While service-learning is widely recognized within engaged education, it is frequently criticized for insufficient attention to justice and advocacy. This study presents the design and implementation of a justice-oriented, community-engaged global health module, exploring how student participation in advocacy fosters civic and global citizenship competencies. It addresses three research questions: (1) to what extent participation results in the development of civic and global citizenship competencies; (2) how students describe the processes through which these competencies develop; and (3) wha

AIM: This study explored school nurses' experiences regarding their professional role and responsibilities in relation to health promotion in Finnish compulsory school settings. METHODS: Adopting a qualitative design, 13 school nurses from Finland were inter
