Gender Differences in the Impact of Stuttering: Evidence from Chinese Adults.

INTRODUCTION: Gender differences in the lived experience of stuttering have been reported primarily in Western contexts, where women often show greater psychosocial impact. Far less is known about gender patterns in non-Western cultures such as China, where gender-role expectations and communication norms may differ from those documented in prior Western studies. This study examined gender differences in the multidimensional impact of stuttering among Chinese adults using the Simplified Chinese version of the Overall Assessment of the Speaker's Experience of Stuttering-Adult (OASES-A-SC). MET…

Network Models for Assessing the Co-occurrence Between Stuttering and ADHD.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Previous studies have indicated that people who stutter (PWS) and people with ADHD (PWADHD) show similar cognitive profiles, implying a link between the two neurodevelopmental profiles. This study examined the relationship between stuttering and ADHD and investigated the extent of this similarity using Network Models (NMs). METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Neurotypical participants (people who did not stutter and did not have ADHD; N = 67), PWADHD (N = 79) and PWS (N = 33) were assessed for stuttering, ADHD traits, and phonological working memory (PWM). Lower PWM is associated wit…

Reimagining stuttering therapy and outcomes through an acceptance and collaborative lens.

The purpose of this paper is to summarize a panel discussion at the 2024 World Stuttering and Cluttering Organization Congress that aimed to explore and reflect on the shifting landscape of stuttering therapy across the lifespan. The panel comprised of speech-language pathologists who have experience in stuttering therapy as clients, professionals, and researchers. The panel members reflect on the research, their professional experiences, and their own personal journey toward a more acceptance-based therapy and its outcomes. The paper concludes with the panel's reflections on the future of stu…

Non-pharmacological interventions for stuttering in children six years and younger.

BACKGROUND: Stuttering, or stammering as it is referred to in some countries, affects a child's ability to speak fluently. It is a common communication disorder, affecting 11% of children by four years of age. Stuttering can be characterized by sound, part word or whole word repetitions, sound prolongations, or blocking of sounds or airflow. Moments of stuttering can also be accompanied by non-verbal behaviours, including visible tension in the speaker's face, eye blinks or head nods. Stuttering can also negatively affect behavioural, social and emotional functioning. OBJECTIVES: Primary obje…

Cognitive behaviour language therapy for speech anxiety among stuttering school adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effectiveness of a cognitive behaviour language therapy (CBLT) programme to reduce speech anxiety among stuttering school adolescents. METHODS: This was a group randomized clinical trial that enrolled stuttering school adolescents who had severe speech anxiety. The participants were randomized to either the treatment group or the control group. The Speech Anxiety Thoughts Inventory (SATI) score was recorded before and after a 12-week CBLT programme was delivered in 24 group sessions to the treatment group. The control group did not receive any therapy. RESULTS: A …

Group lidcombe program treatment for early stuttering: a randomized controlled trial.

PURPOSE: This study adds to the Lidcombe Program evidence base by comparing individual and group treatment of preschoolers who stutter. METHOD: A randomized controlled trial of 54 preschoolers was designed to establish whether group delivery outcomes were not inferior to the individual model. The group arm used a rolling group model, in which a new member entered an existing group each time a vacancy became available. Assessments were conducted prerandomization and 9 months and 18 months postrandomization. RESULTS: There was no evidence of a difference between treatment arms for measures of

Disrupted white matter in language and motor tracts in developmental stuttering.

White matter tracts connecting areas involved in speech and motor control were examined using diffusion-tensor imaging in a sample of people who stutter (n=29) who were heterogeneous with respect to age, sex, handedness and stuttering severity. The goals were to replicate previous findings in developmental stuttering and to extend our knowledge by evaluating the relationship between white matter differences in people who stutter and factors such as age, sex, handedness and stuttering severity. We replicated previous findings that showed reduced integrity in white matter underlying ventral prem…

Five-year longitudinal treatment outcomes of the ISTAR Comprehensive Stuttering Program.

UNLABELLED: Replicated evidence of satisfactory 1- and 2-year post-treatment outcomes has been reported for the Comprehensive Stuttering Program (CSP). However, little is known about longer term outcomes of the CSP. Yearly follow-up measures were obtained from 18 participants for 5 consecutive years. At 5-year follow-up, participants were maintaining clinically and statistically significant reductions in stuttering and increases in rates of speech relative to pre-treatment measures. Standardized effect sizes were large. There were no significant differences among the immediate post-treatment a…

A simple and effective treatment for stuttering: speech practice without audience.

On the assumption that stuttering is essentially acquired behavior, it has been concluded that speech-related anticipatory anxiety as a major cause of stuttering accounts for virtually all apparently-different aspects of stuttering on the behavioral level. Stutterers' linguistic competence is unimpaired, although their speech production is characterized as "disfluent". Yet, such disfluency is dramatically reduced when such people speak in anxiety-free no-audience conditions. Furthermore, our pilot study of oral reading in Japanese indicates that a stutterer can easily replace stuttering events…

Brain correlates of stuttering and syllable production: gender comparison and replication.

This article reports a gender replication study of the P. T. Fox et al. (2000) performance correlation analysis of neural systems that distinguish between normal and stuttered speech in adult males. Positron-emission tomographic (PET) images of cerebral blood flow (CBF) were correlated with speech behavior scores obtained during PET imaging for 10 dextral female stuttering speakers and 10 dextral, age- and sex-matched normally fluent controls. Gender comparisons were made between the total number of voxels per region significantly correlated with speech performance (as in P. T. Fox et al., 200…

Verbal dichotic listening in developmental stuttering: subgroups with atypical auditory processing.

OBJECTIVE: The major aim of this study was to determine whether adults with persistent developmental stuttering have atypical auditory processing. BACKGROUND: Stuttering has been attributed to aberrant hemispheric dominance, and auditory processing deficits have been found in some adults who stutter. Dichotic listening, an indirect measure of auditory processing, has not been used to study auditory laterality in right- and left-handers who stutter. Because left-handers and people who stutter may have aberrant hemispheric dominance, it is important to examine auditory neural systems in right- …

One size does not fit all: special topics in stuttering therapy.

One of the greatest challenges facing clinicians working with school-age children who stutter is the fact that there are such vast differences between and among children who stutter. These differences are seen not only in the speech behaviors children may exhibit, but also in children's experiences with stuttering and in their reactions to those experiences. This article introduces the second of two issues of Seminars in Speech and Language that focuses on school-age children who stutter. The first volume addressed general issues in treatment, and this second volume is aimed at helping clinici…

[Reduction of stuttering frequency using frequency-shifted and delayed auditory feedback].

In 12 stuttering subjects the fluency enhancing effect of delayed auditory feedback (DAF) and frequency-shifted auditory feedback (FAF) was compared. The subjects had to read three passages consisting of 300 syllables under simultaneous auditory feedback, DAF (delay time: 53 ms) and FAF (frequency shift: -(1/2) octave). Stuttering frequency and percentage of discontinuous speech time were determined. Only under DAF a fluency enhancing effect in the mean values was observed, but not under FAF. However, in 4 subjects a reduction in stuttering frequency of 50% occurred. The conclusion is drawn th…
