Over the last three decades there has been an increasing interest in acupuncture treatment of substance abuse around the world. Three important steps can be identified in this field. Dr. H. L. Wen of Hong Kong was the first (1973) to report that acupuncture at 4 body points and 2 ear points combined with electrical stimulation can relieve opiate withdrawal signs in the addicts. The second major step was made by Dr. M. Smith in New York, the head of the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) of the U.S.A., who finalized a protocol (1985), using only ear points without electrical

BACKGROUND: Mental disorders account for a substantial proportion of the years lived with disability (YLDs) globally. These estimates have generally been calculated top down based on summary statistics. The aim for this study was to calculate YLDs and a novel related measure, Health Loss Proportion (HeLP), for 18 mental and substance use disorders, based on person-level register data (bottom up).
METHODS: A cohort of 6 989 627 Danish residents (5·9% had a diagnosis of a mental or substance use disorder registered in the Danish Psychiatric Central Research Register) was investigated. YLDs (the

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorders (SUDs) are a major public health concern, contributing to significant individual and societal costs. Despite this, the uptake of evidence-based pharmacologic and behavioral interventions remains limited. The digital delivery of SUD treatment has emerged as a potentially scalable way to reduce access barriers and increase treatment use. Existing digital therapeutic interventions are often created without clinician involvement, evidence-based materials, interdisciplinary input, or content review. The implementation of a structured and methodologically rigorous

Intervention about addictive behaviours, especially in substance use, has been advancing from traditional therapeutic communities and drug-free programs to comprehensive care networks and harm reduction programs. Addiction recovery is based on the development of capabilities, skills, and competencies that allow the person who has had an addiction problem to generate an alternative lifestyle to the use of substances (or other addictive behaviours) and not only approach treatment from the presence or absence of the main substance. During the 21st century, the so-called Recovery Science has been

Many veterans seek alcohol and other drug (AOD) care in mainstream services, where veteran status is not routinely identified. This limits the sector's capacity to recognise veterans' needs, plan appropriate responses and assess outcomes. This commentary examines the implications of the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide for Australia's AOD sector. It argues that embedding veteran identification within existing accreditation processes under the AOD National Quality Framework offers a practical means of strengthening military cultural capability and improving responsiveness to ve

Over the past decade, as a broader push to address community needs and improve health outcomes, socially marginalised people have become increasingly involved in co-design research and education. More recently, people with lived experience of substance dependence have co-designed and co-delivered Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) education with nurse educators. Evaluations of co-designed AOD education have largely focused on educational and clinical outcomes but not on the process of co-design. Because of this gap, there is a need for research that explores the process of undertaking co-design wit

The Flemish community in Belgium has been actively involved in the European Prevention Curriculum (EUPC) since its adaptation of the UPC (Universal Prevention Curriculum) to the European context, followed by participation in the ASAP-training project (Building effective drug prevention results across Europe, based on prevention systems analysis and widespread professional training). This practitioner narrative explores the implementation of the EUPC in the Flemish community in Belgium as part of a Special Issue on EUPC implementation practice and lessons learnt. The implementation of the EUPC

Drug use trends change rapidly among youth, leaving educators and researchers struggling to respond promptly. Widely adopted universal evidence-based interventions (EBIs), such as the Michigan Model for Health™ (MMH), and their delivery systems offer an opportunity to reach large youth populations and reduce the onset and escalation of emerging drug use trends. Tier 1 EBIs do not always reflect the most current needs of the context and population. Implementation strategies are needed to optimize EBIs and system responsiveness to emerging drugs. This study employs after action review (AAR) to e

During the past 50 years there has been immense progress in our understanding of the etiology, pharmacology, neurobiology, epidemiology, and typologies of alcohol and other drug use disorders that has given rise to numerous novel pharmacological and behavioral treatments and recovery support services. Consequently, much has been documented and published regarding the causes and effects of drug use, addiction, related pathologies, and myriad modes of treatment. While such progress is to be celebrated, significant challenges nevertheless remain. This paper describes a novel perspective that prop

This practitioner narrative aims to describe the implementation of the European Prevention Curriculum (EUPC) in Latvia, highlighting the structure, key achievements, challenges, and lessons learnt to inform future implementation efforts. Until 2025, Latvia has translated the EUPC handbook into the national language, ensured EUPC basic trainings since 2021 and the academic course since 2023, and, with the support of the European Drugs Agency (EUDA, formerly known as the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction, EMCDDA), trained five national EUPC trainers. Currently, the EUPC tra

OBJECTIVES: Encounter-based datasets like the Treatment Episode Dataset-Admissions (TEDS-A) are used for substance use-related research. Although TEDS-A reports the number of previous treatment admissions, a limitation is this reflects encounters, not people. We sought to quantify the methodologic bias incorporated by using all encounters versus initial encounters and assess if this risk is evenly distributed across all routes of drug administration.
METHODS: TEDS-A 2000-2020 dataset with nonmissing primary substance data was used. Of the data, 3.17% were missing the usual administration rout

The directors of the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism have proposed new efforts to enable earlier identification and intervention for harmful substance use and its consequences. As editors of The ASAM Principles of Addiction Medicine, we fully support this goal. The word "preaddiction" has been suggested as a diagnostic label to describe individuals who would be targeted for early intervention. In this commentary, we offer that "unhealthy substance use" would be a better descriptor than "preaddiction" and review several potential barri

Medications to treat substance use disorders (SUDs) remain suboptimal or, in the case of stimulants and cannabis, non-existent. Many factors have contributed to this paucity, including the biological complexity of addiction, regulatory challenges, and a historical lack of enthusiasm among pharmaceutical companies to commit resources to this disease space. Despite these headwinds, the recent opioid crisis has highlighted the devastating consequences of SUDs for both individuals and society, stimulating urgent efforts to identify novel treatment approaches. In addition, several neurobiological s

BACKGROUND: Psychoactive substance use and the regulations that govern it both have the potential to lead to harm. A 'public health approach' (PHA) is frequently invoked as a means of addressing these harms, but the term is used in inconsistent and contradictory ways. This study systematically reviewed the English-language academic literature to understand how a public health approach to substance use is defined and described.
METHODS: This review employed thematic synthesis, a methodology designed to rigorously synthesize qualitative evidence. Eligible articles were published in peer-reviewe

There is a high prevalence of gambling harms co-occurring with substance use harms. Where harms are co-occurring, they may be experienced as more severe. However, there is little evidence that services are systematically screening for such co-occurring harms in treatment-seeking populations. Furthermore, treatment modalities remain relatively under-developed, with treatment usually addressing only one source of harm. This scoping review looks at the current literature on screening and therapeutic interventions for co-occurring gambling and substance use harms to understand how co-occurring harm

BACKGROUND: The rising rates of drug use-related complications call for a paradigm shift in the care for people who use drugs. While addiction treatment and harm reduction have historically been siloed in the US, co-location of these services in office-based addiction treatment (OBAT) settings offers a more realistic and patient-centered approach. We describe a quality improvement program on integrating harm reduction kits into an urban OBAT clinic.
METHODS: After engaging appropriate stakeholders and delivering clinician and staff trainings on safer use best practices, we developed a clinica

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Substance use disorders (SUDs) usually involve a complex natural trajectory of recovery alternating with symptom reoccurrence. This study examined treatment course patterns over time in a community SUD clinic. We examined depressive symptoms level, primary SUD assigned at each admission, and lifetime misuse of multiple substances as potential risk factors for premature treatment termination and subsequent treatment readmission.
METHODS: De-identified longitudinal data were extracted from charts of 542 patients from an SUD treatment center. Survival analysis methods
