Wild swine populations (Sus scrofa) are present in many regions of the world. Large feral populations in North America and Australia are principally derived from introduced domestic pigs. In Europe, most wild boar are found in Germany and Poland. While wild swine are certainly a significant reservoir of infection for domestic swine diseases (for example, African swine fever virus in wild boar in Sardinia), these swine generally do not constitute a major public health risk. Brucella suis infections and trichinellosis are the most important zoonotic threats to public health.

Tissue, fecal, and serum specimens and swabs of nasal turbinates and tracheas were collected from 100 wild swine (Sus scrofa) from 10 populations in Texas and, along with 24 additional serum specimens, were evaluated for selected swine diseases. Swine positive for pseudorabies were detected in 7 populations. Brucella suis biovar 1 was isolated from 4 swine from 2 populations, but positive serologic results may indicate a more widespread distribution of the organism. All populations contained swine that were positive for leptospirosis. Trichinella spiralis was not found in the swine evaluated.

The presence of Trichinella pseudospiralis has been increasingly reported in Europe in the last decade. The parasite was recorded for the fi … l species represent new host records for Trichinella spp. In 2017, a mandatory examination of pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus), red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) and wild boars (Sus scrofa) revealed one wild boar from the central part of territory to be infected with T. pseudospiralis. Our data confirm that the parasite has already established itself in Slovakia, and th …

A serosurvey for Tahyna virus (TAHV), a mosquito-borne California encephalitis orthobunyavirus (Peribunyaviridae) endemic to Europe, was performed to estimate the activity of TAHV on a broad geographic scale. Sera from wild boar (Sus scrofa), roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) and red deer (Cervus elaphus) were collected from Austria, Hungary and Romania. Samples were tested for neutralizing antibodies against TAHV using a virus microneutralization assay. The results demonstrate that TAHV transmission to mammals is widespread in Europe, particularly in the wild boar population where the mean rate …

This case report documents the first confirmed outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) in a wild boar (Sus scrofa) in Nepal. The case was identified in a wild boar carcass found in Shuklaphanta National Park in February 2023. Post-mortem findings, including splenomegaly, haemorrhagic lymph nodes and congested organs, were suggestive of ASF, which was confirmed by real-time PCR. Epidemiological evidence indicates potential transmission from nearby ASF-infected domestic pigs. This case underscores the critical need for rigorous biosecurity protocols, comprehensive surveillance and targeted wildlif…

Between 1986 and 1991, sera were collected from 33 roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), 24 red deer (Cervus elaphus), four fallow deer (Dama dama), two mouflon (Ovis musimon), 34 wild boars (Sus scrofa), and 48 hares (Lepus europaeus) shot in two areas of the Czech Republic. Collectively, the sera contained antibodies to Coxiella burnetii (prevalence of 12%), Francisella tularensis (4%), Brucella spp. (2%), Central European tick-borne encephalitis virus (8%), Tahyna (California serogroup) virus (36%), and Calovo (= Batai) virus (23%). We propose that these mammals may play a role in maintaining nat…

African swine fever (ASF) is a highly contagious disease affecting both free-living wild boars (Sus scrofa) and domestic pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus). In accordance with EU regulations, an ASF outbreak in pig farms necessitates immediate herd culling, leading to severe economic losses and restrictions on pork exports. Therefore, effective epidemiological surveillance of wild boar populations is crucial for monitoring the spread of the disease in the natural environment and preventing transmission to domestic pig farms. This study assessed the effectiveness of an ASF surveillance system consist…

We used PCR to detect Toxoplasma gondii in the principal game species in southwestern Spain. We detected T. gondii in 32.2% of animals tested. Prevalences varied from 14.7% in wild boar (Sus scrofa) to 51.2% in red fox (Vulpes vulpes). The most prevalent genotype was type II (50.0%), followed by type III (20.6%) and type I (5.9%). Mixed infections (11.8%) were detected in wild boar (types I+III) and red fox (types II+III). Polymorphic strains (11.8%) were detected in several species. The high prevalence and the genetic variability shown could have implications for infection of farm animals and…

Wild boar (Sus scrofa) and red deer (Cervus elaphus) are the main large game species hunted in Europe. They can also be a source of zoonotic infections for cohabiting humans. The purpose of this systematic review was to examine the spatiotemporal tendencies and sanitary profiles of surveys on zoonotic diseases of wild boars and red deer in Europe in 15 years (2006-2020). Through the search strategy "((sus scrofa OR wild boar OR cervus elaphus OR red deer) AND (zoonosis OR zoonot* OR infectious disease))" in Pubmed and ScienceDirect databases, 1419 articles were assessed in February of 2021. The lymphotoxin beta receptor (LTβR) is a member of the tumor necrosis factor family of receptors (TNFR). It plays a role in regulating lymphoid organogenesis and homeostasis of the immune system. In the present study, the full coding region of a putative LTβR gene of Sus scrofa was amplified by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and cloned for the first time (accession Nos. JX457347 and AFU74012). In addition, analysis of the tissue expression profile was carried out via RT-PCR. The full-length coding region of porcine LTβR had 1266 nucleotides (molecular weight, 45.61 k…

West Nile virus (WNV) exposure has not yet been reported in feral swine (Sus scrofa) despite the broad geographic range and population density of this species. The objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence of antibodies to WNV in feral pigs, and to evaluate serologic diagnostics as applied to this species. Feral pig serum from three states was evaluated for antibodies to WNV. The overall WNV seroprevalence rate for 222 samples collected in 2001-2004 was 22.5%. Seroprevalence rates in Florida, Georgia, and Texas were 17.2%, 26.3%, and 20.5%, respectively. The results of this stu…

Lipid compositions have been determined by quantitative thin-layer chromatography for epidermis, floor of mouth, gingiva, palate and buccal epithelium of the pig (Sus scrofa). All of the epithelia contained phospholipids, glycosylceramides, cholesteryl sulfate, cholesteryl esters, free sterols, fatty acids and triglycerides. Epidermis, palate and gingiva had similar lipid compositions, which were characterized by the presence of O-acylglycosylceramides, O-acylceramides and relatively high proportions of ceramides. Floor of mouth and buccal epithelium, which are not keratinized, contained no O-…

Common peccaries (Tayassu pecari), wild boars (Sus scrofa) and collared peccaries (Dicotyles tajacu) are species that have gained attention in Brazil because of their close relationship with human beings, their influence on the environment and the parasitic fauna they host, which is common in free-ranging animals. In this study, we obtained the carcasses S. scrofa (n = 4), T. pecari (n = 12) and D. tajacu (n = 1) that were killed by hunting (only wild boars), or by being run over or burned. The animals were necropsied and searched for parasites. The parasites found in the gastrointestinal trac…

The muscular anatomy of the vertebrae, ribs and sternebrae of the Sulawesi Babirusa (Babyrousa celebensis) is described. There are many similarities to the anatomy of the domestic pig (Sus scrofa). However, unlike other pigs, the M. spinalis et semispinalis cervicis et thoracis has an origin from the twelfth thoracic mamillary process. Similarly, the Babyrousa does not have the lumbar part of the M. obliquus internus abdominis which is found in other pigs. The M. sacrocaudalis dorsalis medialis of the Babyrousa is not fused to the Mm. multifidi, and the origin of the M. obliquus externus abdom…

After a human trichinellosis outbreak in Zlatibor District, Serbia, in 2016, Trichinella larvae were found in wild boar ( Sus scrofa) meat products. One hundred and fourteen people were infected during the outbreak. The larvae were determined to be Trichinella britovi using the polymerase chain reaction method. Trichinella britovi has previously been identified in Serbia, but this is the first case of the species being confirmed in food samples linked to human trichinellosis. The results of the study confirmed that the T. britovi is able to affect human health. In addition, this study suggests…

In the frame of a Flemish wildlife surveillance in 2013, a serological screening was performed on sera from wild boar (Sus scrofa; n=238) in order to detect tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV)-specific antibodies. Neutralising antibodies were titrated with a seroneutralisation test (SNT), using two cut-off titres (1/10-1/15). Seven wild boars were found TBEV-seropositive and showed moderate (>1/15) to high (>1/125) SNT-titres; three individuals had borderline results (1/10-1/15). This study demonstrated the presence of TBEV-specific antibodies in wild boar and highlighted potential TBEV-foci …

An adult domestic female pig (Sus scrofa) exhibited clinical signs of right-sided Horner's syndrome after experimental placement of a woven aortic stent followed by aortic catheterization. The clinical signs included a miotic pupil, ptosis of the upper eyelid, prolapse of the nictitating membrane, and enophthalmos. Necropsy revealed a large mass in the right midcervical region that encased or was in contact with the carotid artery, internal jugular vein, and vagus nerve. Closer evaluation of the mass revealed that it was a small piece of surgical suture material that was embedded within the lu…

Gnathostoma doloresi parasitizes the gastric wall of wild (boars) and domestic (pigs) swine (Sus scrofa). Its larvae cause cutaneous larva migrans in humans. Amphibians, reptiles and a freshwater fish are infected with the advanced 3rd stage larvae. Prevalence of G. doloresi larvae were surveyed in several snakes, especially in a common frog-eating snake (Rhabdophis tigrinus). All species of snakes examined were infected with G. doloresi larvae suggesting that snakes are important reservoir hosts. Prevalence of G. doloresi larvae in frog-eating snakes was lower than that found in mammal-eating…
