Progress in the development of suture materials results in a lower rate of fistulas. Modern techniques for the diagnosis of leakage (contrast study, CT-scan) allow for an early diagnosis and adequate therapy: if possible conservative therapy with drainage of the abscess, adapted antibiotic therapy and parenteral and enteral nutrition are the best methods. In the period 1964-1988 there have been performed 3173 pulmonary resections of which 1261 pneumoectomies. In 952 patients the mechanical suture was placed in the main bronch and standard suture in 309 patients. For mechanical sutures the Soviet UKL-40 or 60 apparatus was used. The bronchial fistula occurred in 9.2% of surgical patients after using mechanical suture and in 36.5% after using standard suture.

PURPOSE: The purpose is to compare the clinical results of using silk versus nylon sutures for conjunctival autograft suturing in pterygium surgery.
METHODS: In this prospective, randomized, controlled, clinical trial 50 eyes from 50 patients with primary nasal pterygium were randomized to undergo pterygium surgery with the use of either nylon sutures or silk sutures for conjunctival autograft suturing. Patients were followed up for 6 months. Main outcome measures included recurrence, postoperative discomfort according to a visual analog scale (VAS), graft hyperemia, and graft edema.

Although most reported cases of minor suture involvement include multiple sutures, isolated suture involvement has been reported.
