Toxoplasmagondii oocysts, Giardia cysts and Cryptosporidium oocysts in outdoor swimming pools in Brazil.

The accidental ingestion of treated recreational water is an important transmission route of waterborne protozoa worldwide. The present study aimed to provide the first evaluation of swimming pools in Brazil, analysing the presence of pathogenic protozoa (Toxoplasma gondii, Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia spp.) by parasitological and molecular methods. A total of 57 samples were collected from 21 public swimming pools, either directly from the pool or filter backwash water and concentrated using the membrane filtration technique. Giardia cysts and Cryptosporidium oocysts were visualized by di

Lung Diffusion in a 14-Day Swimming Altitude Training Camp at 1850 Meters.

Swimming exercise at sea level causes a transient decrease in lung diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO). The exposure to hypobaric hypoxia can affect lung gas exchange, and hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction may elicit pulmonary oedema. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether there are changes in DLCO during a 14-day altitude training camp (1850 m) in elite swimmers and the acute effects of a combined training session of swimming in moderate hypoxia and 44-min cycling in acute normobaric severe hypoxia (3000 m). Participants were eight international level swimmers (5 females

Do 5% changes around maximal lactate steady state lead to swimming biophysical modifications?

Our purpose was to examine the swimming biophysical responses at velocities (v) of 97.5, 100 and 102.5% of the maximal lactate steady state (MLSS). Ten elite female swimmers performed three-to-five 30-min constant tests at imposed paces to determine 97.5, 100 and 102.5%MLSS v. Gas exchange, blood lactate concentration ([La-]), stroke rate (SR) and v were determined during each test. The v values at 97.5, 100 and 102.5%MLSS were 1.21±0.07, 1.24±0.07 and 1.27±0.07m.s(-1), respectively. Oxygen uptake (V̇O2) and Pulmonary ventilation (V̇E) increased as function of v. SR and stroke length (v/SR=SL)

Indoor swimming pool attendance and respiratory and dermal health in schoolchildren--HITEA Catalonia.

BACKGROUND: Health benefits of swimming in pools may outweigh adverse health outcomes in children, but evidence from epidemiological studies is scarce or inconclusive for different health outcomes. We evaluated the association between indoor swimming pool attendance during childhood and respiratory and dermal conditions and symptoms in Catalan schoolchildren. METHODS: Cross-sectional study in 2758 children aged 6-12 years from 18 primary schools in Barcelona province. Information on regular indoor swimming pool attendance in seven age periods, history of health conditions (asthma, wheezing, e

Volatile disinfection byproducts resulting from chlorination of uric acid: implications for swimming pools.

Cyanogen chloride (CNCl) and trichloramine (NCl3) are important disinfection byproducts in chlorinated swimming pools. However, some unknowns exist regarding the precursors of their formation. In this study, uric acid is shown to be an efficient precursor to formation of CNCl and NCl3. The molar yields of CNCl and NCl3 were observed to be as high as 44% (pH = 6.0, chlorine/precursor molar ratio [Cl/P] = 6.4) and 108% (pH = 7.0, Cl/P = 30), respectively, both being strong functions of Cl/P, pH, and temperature. Analysis of swimming pool water samples, combined with the results of experiments in

Pseudomonas aeruginosa on vinyl-canvas inflatables and foam teaching aids in swimming pools.

Swimming pool-related Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections mainly result in folliculitis and otitis externa. P. aeruginosa forms biofilms on surfaces in the swimming pool environment. The presence of P. aeruginosa on inflatables and foam teaching aids in 24 public swimming pools in the Netherlands was studied. Samples (n = 230) were taken from 175 objects and analysed for P. aeruginosa by culture. Isolated P. aeruginosa were tested for antibiotic resistance by disk diffusion. P. aeruginosa was detected in 63 samples (27%), from 47 objects (27%) in 19 (79%) swimming pools. More vinyl-canvas object

Modelling of energy expended by free swimming spermatozoa in temperature-dependent viscous semen.

Derived models of fertilization kinetics have relied upon estimates of the swimming velocity of spermatozoa from the insemination site to a fallopian tube. However, limited derivations are available describing the probability and energy expended when spermatozoa collide with one another. An analytic approach of spermatozoon motion in a linear viscoelastic fluid is adopted to simplify the derivation. The complex kinematics of motion of an inextensible flagellum is modelled as planar flagellar wave of small amplitude. In humans, a temperature difference is expected between the cooler tubal isthm

Swimming-triggered aborted sudden cardiac death in a patient with Andersen-Tawil syndrome.

In this report we describe the case of a 42-year-old woman who experienced an episode of near drowning during recreational swimming. A diagnosis of Andersen-Tawil syndrome was made based on the patient's dysmorphic features, characteristic T-U-wave patterns and ventricular arrhythmias. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a swimming-triggered cardiac event in a patient with Andersen-Tawil syndrome.

Peripherally administered growth hormone increases brain dopaminergic activity and swimming in rainbow trout.

There is increasing evidence that growth hormone (GH) has important behavioral effects in fish, but the underlying mechanisms are not well understood. To investigate if peripherally administered GH influences the monoaminergic activity of the brain, and how this is correlated to behavior, juvenile rainbow trout were implanted intraperitoneally with ovine GH. Fish were either kept isolated or in groups of five. The physical activity and food intake of the isolated fish were observed after 1 and 7 days, when brains were also sampled. The content of serotonin, dopamine, and noradrenaline and thei

Membrane sorting during swimming internalization of Brucella is required for phagosome trafficking decisions.

Brucella infects macrophages by swimming internalization, after which it is enclosed in macropinosomes. We investigated the role of the uptake pathway in phagosome trafficking, which remains unclear. This study found membrane sorting during swimming internalization and is essential in intracellular replication of Brucella. The B. abortus virB mutant replicated intracellularly when it was in the macropinosome established by wild-type B. abortus that retained its ability to alter phagosome trafficking. Lipid rafts-associated molecules, such as GM1 ganglioside, were selectively included into macr

Effects of sublethal ammonia exposure on swimming performance in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss).

Adult trout Oncorhynchus mykiss fitted with a dorsal aortic catheter were exposed to 288+/-15 micromol l(-1) (mean +/- S.E.M.) total ammonia for 24h in water at a pH of 8.39+/-0.02, while swimming at a speed equivalent to 0.75 bodylengths s(-1) (BLs(-1)) in a Brett-type tunnel respirometer. The fish were then exposed to stepwise increments in swimming speed (0.25 BLs(-1) every 30 min) until exhaustion. Measurements of oxygen uptake (M(O2)) and plasma total ammonia levels and pH were made at each speed. Control trout were treated identically but without exposure to ammonia. Ammonia exposure cau

Hindlimb extensor muscle function during jumping and swimming in the toad (Bufo marinus).

Many anurans use their hindlimbs to generate propulsive forces during both jumping and swimming. To investigate the musculoskeletal dynamics and motor output underlying locomotion in such physically different environments, we examined patterns of muscle strain and activity using sonomicrometry and electromyography, respectively, during jumping and swimming in the toad Bufo marinus. We measured strain and electromyographic (EMG) activity in four hindlimb muscles: the semimembranosus, a hip extensor; the plantaris, an ankle extensor; and the gluteus and cruralis, two knee extensors. During jumpi

Reactivation of oral-lingual herpes by chlorinated swimming pool water: a case report.

The authors describe the case of a highly stressed 36-year-old man who experienced ten or more painful episodes per year of recurrent oral-lingual herpes simplex virus 1, which were only partially responsive to acyclovir therapy for three years. A three-year diary of activities, personal stresses, concurrent infections, local trauma, and other possible psychogenic, somatogenic, and environmental events was used systematically to attempt to pair the stresses with the recurrent herpes episodes. Chlorinated swimming pool water seems to have been the triggering agent of the recurrent herpes simple
