We demonstrate the use of goat erythrocytes in a rosette procedure for the classification of human lymphocytes. The population is almost perfectly overlapping with the lymphocytes which form rosettes with sheep red blood cells. 70·2 ± 7·5% of peripheral lymphocytes form rosettes with goat erythrocytes and less than 1% of these cells have surface immunoglobulins. In this study a variety of human lymphocytes of known B or T cell type, obtained from multiple sources, were prepared for scanning electron microscopy (SEM) by the critical point drying method. One hundred and forty-eight cases of clinically diagnosed seborrhoeic keratoses and 12 of stuccokeratoses were selected from Dermato Venereology department of Rajendra Hospital, Patiala, during a period of 15 months. Several studies have previously suggested the possible role of a T lymphocyte suppressor population in infections by species of the genus Rickettsia. This article reviews some of the lessons derived from our use of T lymphocyte lines and clones to study three experimental autoimmune diseases: experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis, experimental autoimmune thyroiditis and adjuvant arthritis. In each of these disease models we have raised lines and clones of T lymphocytes of the helper phenotype that are specifically autoimmune. These T lymphocytes were used to investigate the pathogenesis of disease. Lines and clones were also exploited to induce resistance to disease.

Verapamil, a calcium-inhibitory drug, was found to inhibit T-lymphocyte proliferation in mixed lymphocyte culture and the proliferative response to phytohaemagglutinin and mumps antigen. It also inhibited production of interleukin 2 (IL-2). To exert inhibition, verapamil had to be added early in the culture period. Verapamil also had a relatively small inhibitory effect on IL-2-dependent growth. The effects were clearly seen only at concentrations exceeding the therapeutic serum level of verapamil.
