The inherent redundancy in vehicle sensor data, coupled with constrained onboard resources and stringent latency requirements, renders traditional bit-oriented transmission paradigms inefficient for autonomous-driving perception tasks. Semantic communication offers a promising direction by shifting the focus from bit-level fidelity to task-level information delivery. In this paper, we propose a unified framework that integrates hierarchical transmission and online scheduling for Internet of Vehicles (IoV)-oriented collaborative perception. The proposed hierarchy separates information into two

Control-demanding tasks rely on communication among regions of the frontoparietal network, areas that undergo significant age-related decline. Here, we integrate data from brain anatomy, electrophysiology (ERPs), and optical imaging (event-related optical signals, EROS) to characterize the spatial and temporal dynamics of preparatory control processes in middle to old age. Older adults participated in an experiment that required switching between a position and a meaning task (spatial Stroop), a paradigm that has been shown to primarily recruit prefrontal cortex in opposite hemispheres and is

The Iowa gambling task (IGT) is one of the most influential behavioral paradigms in reward-related decision making and has been, most notably, associated with ventromedial prefrontal cortex function. However, performance in the IGT relies on a complex set of cognitive subprocesses, in particular integrating information about the outcome of choices into a continuously updated decision strategy under ambiguous conditions. The complexity of the task has made it difficult for neuroimaging studies to disentangle the underlying neurocognitive processes. In this study, we used functional magnetic res

Reliable noninvasive measurement of human brainstem activity during motor control remains challenging due to small anatomical structures and physiological noise, yet it is essential for understanding descending contributions to rapid feedback control. We used brainstem-optimized whole brain functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine whether task-dependent modulation of stretch-evoked motor responses in humans are associated with changes in activation within reticulospinal regions of the human brainstem. A behavioral validation experiment (N = 10), in which participants were instru

OBJECTIVES: The effect of sleep disordered breathing (SDB) on driving performance in older adults has not been extensively investigated, especially in those with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between severity measures of SDB and a simulated driving task in older adults with and without MCI.
METHODS: Nineteen older adults (age ≥50) meeting criteria for MCI and 23 age-matched cognitively intact controls underwent neuropsychological assessment and a driving simulator task in the evening before a diagnostic sleep study.
RESULTS: There were

Rapid processing deficits have been the subject of much debate in the literature on specific language impairment (SLI). Hari and Renvall (2001) [Hari, R. & Renvall, H. (2001). Impaired processing of rapid stimulus sequences in dyslexia. Trends in cognitive sciences, 5, 525-532.] proposed that the source of this deficit can be attributed to sluggish attentional shifting abilities. That is, more time is required to shift attention between stimuli. To test this claim, 26 adolescents with SLI (divided into two subgroups to control for differences in non-verbal intelligence) and 14 controls were pr

The false fame effect occurs when previously encountered nonfamous names are later misidentified as famous because, although people no longer remember the circumstances in which the names were encountered, the names remain familiar and that familiarity is mistakenly attributed to fame. The present study examined whether shifting participants' internal context through autobiographical daydreaming would increase susceptibility to the false fame effect, and whether larger context shifts would produce greater memory distortions. Across two experiments, participants first studied a list of nonfamou

When thinking about a task or goal feels difficult, people can interpret this as signaling self-relevant value (difficulty-as-importance) and a reminder to stop wasting time on self-irrelevant things (difficulty-as-impossibility). Identity-based motivation theory predicts that both interpretations are available in memory, vary in momentary accessibility, and shape action in part through activating action-relevant judgments. We note that in situations calling for task engagement, action-relevant judgment entails making sense of time, an abstract concept that people reason about metaphorically.

Early efforts to understand the human cerebral cortex focused on localization of function, assigning functional roles to specific brain regions. More recent evidence depicts the cortex as a dynamic system, organized into flexible networks with patterns of spatiotemporal activity corresponding to attentional demands. In functional MRI (fMRI), dynamic analysis of such spatiotemporal patterns is highly promising for providing non-invasive biomarkers of neurodegenerative diseases and neural disorders. However, there is no established neurotypical spectrum to interpret the burgeoning literature of

Remapping is a process that updates visual information in internal spatial representations across eye movements, allowing for stable perception of the environment. Previous work has demonstrated visual remapping activity in parietal cortex during saccades, but it remains unclear whether remapping is triggered by overt saccades only (or by attentional shifts also), and whether it engages parietal areas only (or other cortical areas). Here, we used fMRI to investigate spatial remapping during two visuospatial memory tasks requiring either overt (accompanied by a saccade) or covert (with central

Transcranial Doppler sonography (TCD) was applied in normal subjects to investigate the effect of prefrontal functions like the Tower of Hanoi (TOH) task and the Wisconsin Card Sorting test (WCST) on cerebral hemodynamics. In 20 healthy volunteers, left and right middle cerebral artery (MCA) and anterior cerebral artery (ACA) were insonated. The TOH task and the WCST were administered while cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) was registered. Each test was repeated once per artery pair. There was a visuomotor test to control the motor and visual stimulations. Three phases of CBFV time course we

OBJECTIVE: Walking is one of the most complex human movements that can be affected by various sources of attention. Dual tasks reduce attention, increase information processing, and may alter control mechanisms such as synergy. However, the effect of dual tasks on muscle synergy remains unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of cognitive and motor dual tasks on the synergy of lower limb muscles during walking.
METHODS: Twenty-four participants were selected voluntarily. The activity of the eight lower limb muscles was recorded under three different conditions: normal w

A sudden turn initiated at an unpredictable moment is referred to as reactive turning. This study was designed to seek an age-related decrease in reactive turning when the task demand for turning was increased using a task-switching paradigm. Twenty healthy older adults and 14 younger adults were instructed to walk and execute a 90-degree turn under two conditions. In the "reactive turning condition," participants were asked to turn abruptly when the initially presented travel direction (e.g. right) switched to the opposite direction (e.g. left) while walking. This switch occurred in only one-

Eighty percent of the world's youth live in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), yet access to trauma-focused mental health care in these settings remains limited despite a high burden of mental health disorders and trauma exposure among youth. Task-shifting models that train lay counselors to deliver evidence-based treatments can expand access to care, yet delivering trauma-focused treatment may increase counselors' vulnerability to secondary traumatic stress (STS). Organization-level support may play an important role in sustaining counselor well-being, yet little is known about which o

BACKGROUND: In HIV programs, mentor mothers (MMs) are women living with HIV who provide peer support for other women to navigate HIV care, especially in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT). Nigeria has significant PMTCT program gaps, and in this resource-constrained setting, lay health workers such as MMs serve as task shifting resources for formal healthcare workers and facility-community liaisons for their clients. However, challenging work conditions including tenuous working relationships with healthcare workers can reduce MMs' impact on PMTCT outcomes. This study…
