PURPOSE: Dorsal plating of distal radius fractures with titanium plates has resulted in clinically observed tenosynovitis and tendon rupture. The goal of this study was to investigate whether titanium-based implants result in more extensor tendon inflammation than matched stainless-steel implants in a canine fracture model.
METHODS: An osteotomy was created in the distal radius of 18 beagles and fixed with 2.7-mm 4-hole plates composed of commercially pure titanium, titanium alloy (Ti-Al6-V4), or 316L stainless steel. Animals were killed at an average of 4 months. Tendon gliding was assessed …

Surgical treatment of pyogenic flexor tenosynovitis traditionally consists of open drainage (OD) and irrigation of the flexor tendon sheath. An alternative, less traumatic method of closed-catheter irrigation (CCI) has been advocated, but no comparative studies have been reported. The authors reviewed 47 cases of pyogenic flexor tenosynovitis to determine whether a difference in outcomes exists between these two methods. OD was used in 32 patients and CCI was used in 15 patients. Complications appeared to be more common in the OD group (N = 9) compared with the CCI group (N = 3), but this diff…

The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence and incidence of trigger finger (TF) in a meat-packing plant and explore the relationship between hand-tool use and the development of TF. A cross-sectional study was competed wherein 665 workers were interviewed and examined to determine the point prevalence. Subsequently, 454 TF-negative workers were followed up and examined twice at a median interval of 225 days. The point prevalence of TF was 14%. The person-year incidence rate was 12.4% and 2.6% for tool use and non-tool use workers, respectively. Forty-three cases of TF (75.2%) in

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that diabetic tenosynovitis participates in the contractures of the syndrome of limited joint mobility (SLJM).
METHODS: Adults with diabetes mellitus were referred for the evaluation of diabetic hand conditions. Patients with SLJM or diabetic trigger finger were studied after Dupuytren's contracture, hand neuropathy, carpal tunnel syndrome, and arthritis were excluded. A time series design was employed in which patients were observed for 3 mo to obtain a baseline, then the planar flexor tendon sheaths were injected with 10 mg of methylprednisolone acetate or …

BACKGROUND: De Quervain's tenosynovitis is a common cause of radial wrist pain, with corticosteroid injections providing excellent relief. Ultrasound guidance may improve anatomic accuracy and symptom resolution. This study investigates the benefits of ultrasound-guidance and its effects on reintervention-free survival time.
METHODS: Patients at a single academic institution between 2014 and 2025 with de Quervain's tenosynovitis receiving at least one corticosteroid injection were included. Patients undergoing traditional and ultrasound-guided injections were propensity score matched. Primary…

BACKGROUND: Wrist-thumb orthoses are commonly used in the conservative management of De Quervain's tenosynovitis; however, conventional fabrication techniques often limit anatomical fit and patient comfort. Three-dimensional (3D) printing enables patient-specific orthosis design and may improve usability, particularly in resource-limited rehabilitation settings.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility, clinical outcomes, and patient satisfaction associated with customized 3D-printed wrist-thumb orthoses in individuals with De Quervain's tenosynovitis.
METHODS: This prospective observational s…

INTRODUCTION: Pregnancy and the immediate postpartum are periods of immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS), exposing patients to an increased risk of severe infections. Among these, necrotizing soft tissue infection (NSTI) is a rare but serious, life- and function-threatening condition.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 31-year-old patient three weeks postpartum, admitted for acute right hand pain with septic signs. The initial clinical picture, typical of a pyogenic flexor tenosynovitis of the ring finger, rapidly evolved into NSTI of the palm. Despite urgent medical and surgi…

Dupuytren's disease and trigger finger are common fibroproliferative disorders that may coexist clinically. Although their clinical associat … enhancement of the A1 pulley and associated flexor tendon sheath changes compatible with stenosing tenosynovitis. This case highlights the utility of MRI in evaluating multifactorial hand symptoms and demonstrates simultaneous imaging features of two distinct but potentially related fibroproliferative processes.

Plant thorn synovitis is a frequently missed and neglected injury. We report a delayed case of suspected thorn injury to the left middle finger in a 5-year-old child, which was treated with thorn removal and complete flexor synovectomy to achieve good results. Proper history, clinical examination, and correlated radiological findings can help in the diagnosis. Patients may seek late treatment due to persistent swelling and pain. Antibiotic may be given; however, in a delayed case, its role is debatable. Thorn removal and complete tenosynovectomy offers complete recovery.

PURPOSE: De Quervain's tenosynovitis (DQV) is a common tendinopathy characterized by inflammation of the first extensor compartment, resulting in pain on the radial side of the wrist. While clinical assessment is primarily utilized for diagnosis, radiographic imaging may be essential for ruling out alternative conditions. This study aimed to investigate specific radiographic measurements of the radial styloid and their correlation with DQV.
METHODS: We conducted a matched case-control study at a tertiary university hospital in southern Thailand from August 2023 to March 2024, enrolling patien…

Splinting is a conventional treatment for de Quervain's tenosynovitis (dQt). However, existing splints have problems such as excessive thermal discomfort and poor fit, which have been pointed out in previous studies. This study proposes a new functional splint consisting of both hard and soft materials with the aim of providing wear comfort with a good fit and sufficient stability of the injured hand. Thumb support of the splint is an important component that controls and protects the affected thumb. To develop an ergonomically shaped thumb support, 16 participants with dQt were recruited for …

Stenosing tenosynovitis of the ankle with osseous bone formation following an open reduction and internal fixation of the ankle is a rare clinical condition. We report a case of adult-acquired flat foot following an open reduction and internal fixation of a bi-malleolar fracture due to tibialis posterior tendon dysfunction caused by stenosing tenosynovitis. This was managed by open excision of the bony tunnel and debridement, along with calcaneal osteotomy and distalization of the tendon, resulting in good functional outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Increasing evidence indicates that gut microbiota dysbiosis is related to synovitis and tenosynovitis. Nonetheless, whether these associations are causal is currently unknown.
OBJECTIVES: A two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study was performed to reveal the causality of gut microbiota with synovitis and tenosynovitis.
METHODS: The summary statistical data from a large-scale genome-wide association study (GWAS) were applied as the basis for a two-sample MR analysis. The causal effect was estimated using inverse variance weighted (IVW), weighted median, simple mode, MR-Egger,…

INTRODUCTION: Steroid hormone blocking is a common treatment for tenosynovitis. However, local steroid hormone blocking requires careful attention to the local inflammatory response, as infection can cause severe local soft tissue inflammation and damage.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 46-year-old female patient received local steroid hormone blocking treatment for tenosynovitis of the right thumb at another hospital 3 months earlier. Five days later, the patient gradually experienced redness, swelling, and pain in her right hand. By day 7, the symptoms worsened with increased swelling, wrist pain, …

Mycobacterium chelonae is a ubiquitous Gram-positive, acid-fast, non-spore-forming bacterium commonly encountered in nature associated with aquatic animals, soil, and water, including tap water. Nontuberculous mycobacterial tenosynovitis infections caused by M. chelonae in the lower extremity are uncommon, leading to a paucity of literature documenting the diagnosis and treatment of such cases. This report is of a 65-year-old male patient who was found to have an M. chelonae infection along the tibialis anterior tendon after injecting himself with heroin into the dorsal foot veins. This review…

De Quervain tenosynovitis is an overuse syndrome associated with inflammation of the tendons in the first dorsal compartment of the wrist. Management includes activity modification, splinting, and corticosteroid injections. In refractory cases, surgical release may be performed, which may be complicated by incomplete release, tendon subluxation, or radial nerve injury. Alternatively, ultrasound-guided release may improve patient satisfaction and outcomes through faster recovery time as well as improved visualization of subcompartments and neurovascular structures. To the best of the authors' k…

Tenosynovitis caused by tuberculosis (TB) is a rare presentation of this disease usually reported in immunocompromised patients. We describe a patient diagnosed with TB tenosynovitis of the left upper limb with no history of immunodeficiency. Although appearing in an endemic area the time to diagnosis was 6 years due to the absence of acid-fast stained bacilli in the first cultures despite histopathology showing a granulomatous lesion. Institution of pharmacological treatment and surgical debridément led to improvement within one month. The authors emphasize the need for early intervention in …
