BACKGROUND: Thymoma is a rare malignancy of unknown etiology.
METHODS: The author examined patterns in thymoma incidence in the US general population using data from Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) cancer registries. Prior studies concerning the risk of additional malignancies in thymoma patients were reviewed.
RESULTS: Based on cancer registry data, the overall incidence of thymoma in the US is 0.13 per 100,000 person-years. Thymoma is exceedingly uncommon in children and young adults, rises in incidence in middle age, and peaks in the seventh decade of life. Thymoma inci

INTRODUCTION: Thirty years have gone by since the Masaoka staging system of thymoma was proposed in 1981. Although the Masaoka staging system has been accepted by many surgeons and pathologists, some proposals of revision and improvements have been suggested. At this time, I reinvestigated the Masaoka staging system based on the recent follow-up study of the thymomas resected at Nagoya City University.
METHODS: Using the follow-up results of 211 thymomas in Nagoya, I analyzed the following aspects: (1) evaluation of the Masaoka staging system as a prognostic factor in the Nagoya series and (2

Thymomas are relatively uncommon. Nevertheless, an accumulation of studies (mostly retrospective, single-institution series) have made it important to approach this disease in a knowledgeable, evidence-based fashion. This begins with the approach to evaluation of a patient with an anterior mediastinal mass, in whom a reliable clinical diagnosis is usually possible in experienced centers. Surgical resection is the mainstay of treatment, and every effort must be made to achieve a complete resection.

Thymomas are relatively common tumors of the anterior superior mediastinum. They are usually relatively slowly growing tumors and their prognosis depends on the macroscopic and microscopic invasion of surrounding tissues. Surgery is the mainstay treatment of thymomas, and complete resection represents one of the most important prognostic factors in this disease. Other important prognostic indicators include the tumor stage and size and the presence of symptoms. Postoperative radiotherapy is indicated in tumors with invasion of surrounding tissues, even if resection was radical, since it improv

Impact of surgery on the result of mediastinal tumors is variable: In benign tumors such as teratoma, congenital cyst, intrathoracic struma and neurogenic tumor, a complete resection causes a good result. Simultaneous thoracotomy and laminectomy should be performed in the Dumbbell type of neurogenic tumor. Since complete resection of the invasive thymoma promises a good prognosis, excision of all the tumor and invading tissues followed by radiation therapy is recommended in the treatment of thymoma. In pure seminoma resection and radiation therapy is the treatment of choice, while in non-semin

Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)-producing neuroendocrine neoplasm (NEN) of the thymus is rare. Lymph nodes and bones are the most common metastatic sites. Most cases present with florid Cushing's syndrome (CS). Here, we reported a 58-year-old woman, who presented with intermittent flush and weight loss. Imaging studies revealed tumors in the mediastinum, pancreas, and bones. Contrast-enhanced harmonic endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) of the pancreatic tumors showed heterogeneous and hyperenhancing characteristics. EUS elastography revealed a heterogeneous stiff pattern. EUS-fine needle biopsy to

BACKGROUND: Thymoma is a T cell neoplasm arising from the thymic epithelium that due to its immunological role, frequently undercover derangements of immunity such a tumors and autoimmune diseases.
METHODS: Herein, we report, to the best of our knowledge, the first description of an association between thymoma and adult onset Still disease (AOSD) in a 47-year-old man. The first one was occasionally detected 4 years later the diagnosis of AOSD, and surgically removed via right lateral thoracotomy. Histology confirmed an encapsulated thymic tumor (type AB sec. WHO-classification).

BACKGROUND: A thymoma, an epithelial neoplasm of the thymus, mainly occurs in the anterior mediastinum, while few are seen in the middle mediastinum.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 83-year-old male was referred for an incidental mass in the middle mediastinum. He had severe dementia and denied symptoms. Our follow-up computed tomography (CT) examinations had revealed the progress of tracheal compression along with tumor enlargement for 2 years. At 85 years old, we performed a thymomectomy via a median sternotomy to avoid complete trachea obstruction. The pathological diagnosis was WHO type A thymoma,

A 69-year-old man with rapidly evolving vertigo and ataxia was admitted to our hospital. He was presented with a dysarthric speech and chaotic eye movements, identified as opsoclonus. Neurological examination revealed limb and truncal ataxias and an inability to stand unless fully assisted. A chest CT scan revealed a mass at the anterior mediastinum, which suggested paraneoplastic neurological syndrome (PNS). However, an extensive search for anti-neuronal antibodies linked to cerebellar ataxia failed to find any autoantibodies, including cell surface autoantibodies. Subsequently, a total surgi

Mediastinal germ cell tumours (M-GCT) are rare forms of neoplasms compared with other tumours of the same location. They are classified in seminomas, malignant non-seminomatous GCT and teratomas. The malignant transformation of the somatic component of the teratoma, with sarcomatous or carcinomatous degeneration, is even more uncommon. We report the clinical case of a 32 year old man who presented with severe chest pain on the right hemithorax. The image exams revealed the existence of a large heterogeneous lesion with a diameter of 7.7 cm, with areas of lipomatous density and a calcic image w

Introduction. Thymoma is the most common tumour of the anterior mediastinum. Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery technique of thymoma resection is spreading world-wide, but the thoracoscopic method is still contentious in many ways. Authors evaluate the early and mid-term results of a 17 years period of VATS unilateral approach at 2 Hungarian thoracic surgical centers. Method. Depending on the anatomical situation of the thymoma, we performed thymectomy, or partial thymectomy (thymomectomy) for the Masaoka–Koga I–II–III stage thymoma from the right or left side through 2 or 3 intercostal ports.
