Non-thyroid autoantibodies in autoimmune thyroid disease.

Autoimmune thyroid disease is frequently accompanied by other organ-specific and non-organ-specific diseases, most likely because there is sharing of genetic and possibly environmental susceptibility factors. These associations are well recognized in the autoimmune polyglandular syndromes; autoimmune thyroid disease is one of the three major endocrinopathies in the type 2 syndrome and occurs in around 4% of type 1 patients. This review considers the frequency of disease-specific autoantibodies in patients with thyroid autoimmunity and briefly examines the role of such antibodies in performing

[Plasmapheresis treatment in 3 simultaneously occurring autoimmune diseases: Hashimoto thyroiditis with hyperthyroidism, autoimmune thrombopenia and autoimmune hemolytic anemia].

A 49 year-old women with a 2-year history of a Coombs-positive autoimmune haemolytic anaemia was hospitalized with Hashimoto's thyroiditis and thyrotoxic crisis. The clinical course was further complicated by an autoimmune thrombocytopenia. Primary resection of the thyroid thus seemed to be too risky, so we decided to perform therapeutic plasma exchange. This led to clinical improvement, enabling us to perform a thyroidectomy. The present investigation reveals the high efficiency of plasmapheresis in the treatment of combined autoimmune diseases. Therapeutic plasma exchange resulted in a reduc

The association of common autoimmune diseases with autoimmune thyroiditis: a two-sample Mendelian randomization study.

OBJECTIVE: Numerous observational and retrospective studies have demonstrated an association between Autoimmune Thyroiditis (AIT) and various systemic Autoimmune Diseases (AIDs). However, the causal relationship between them remains uncertain. This study aims to investigate the causal link between AIT and diverse types of AIDs utilizing the Mendelian Randomization (MR) method. METHOD: We assessed the causal relationship between AIT and eight prevalent AIDs. Summary statistics from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) were sourced from the FinnGen biobank and IEU Open GWAS database. Two-samp

The effect of vitamin D on thyroid autoimmunity in euthyroid men with autoimmune thyroiditis and testosterone deficiency.

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune (Hashimoto's thyroiditis) is characterized by a strong female preponderance, which may suggest that sex hormones have an impact on thyroid autoimmunity. The aim of this study was to investigate whether testosterone determines vitamin D action on thyroid antibody titers and thyroid function tests in men with autoimmune thyroiditis and low testosterone levels. METHODS: The study included 36 men with testosterone deficiency, 17 of whom had been treated for at least 26 weeks with oral testosterone undecanoate (120 mg daily). Because of coexistent euthyroid Hashimoto's thyro

Autoimmune thyroiditis in paediatric thyroid cancer: clinical features and outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate clinical characteristics and survival outcomes of paediatric differentiated thyroid carcinoma (paedDTC) in patients with and without autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT). DESIGN: Retrospective cohort analysis of paedDTC patients with and without AIT, prospectively enrolled in the German Malignant Endocrine Tumour Registry between 1997 and 2024. METHODS: We analysed data from paediatric patients (<18 years) with histopathologically confirmed DTC, stratified by AIT status. Variables included demographics, tumour characteristics, lymph node involvement, and metastasis. Survival o

Lower dietary folate intake increases the risk of autoimmune thyroiditis.

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITDs) are a group of organ-specific autoimmune disorders resulting from the loss of immune tolerance, with autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) being the most common phenotype. In recent years, folate, an essential nutrient, has been associated with the onset of various autoimmune diseases. However, the relationship between dietary folate intake and AIT remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study seeks to explore the possible link between folate consumption and AIT. METHODS: This study is based on the 2009-2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NH

Comparing reference points in strain elastography for predicting autoimmune thyroiditis.

PURPOSE: Chronic autoimmune thyroiditis shows increased stiffness on elastography. The sternocleidomastoid (SCM) or strap muscles have been used as references in strain elastography in prior studies. We aimed to compare the effects of different reference points in strain elastography on its diagnostic performance. METHODS: Patients referred for thyroidectomy underwent strain elastography assessment of the non-tumor-bearing thyroid parenchyma. The strain ratio was determined using either the adjacent SCM muscle or the trachea at the same depth as reference points. Final pathological results se

Steroid-Responsive Encephalopathy Associated With Autoimmune Thyroiditis Presenting With Parkinsonism.

Steroid-responsive encephalopathy associated with autoimmune thyroiditis (SREAT) is a rare condition defined as encephalopathy with a positive antithyroid antibody. We report the case of a 52-year-old woman who presented with Parkinsonism associated with Hashimoto's thyroiditis. A few similar cases have been reported. Our patient responded well to corticosteroids with a significant reduction in symptoms. Diagnosis can pose a significant challenge in SREAT cases because of its variable clinical presentation. Therefore, we recommend evaluating thyroid function and thyroid autoantibodies in the c

An Uncustomary Branchial Cleft Cyst Presentation With Associated Autoimmune Thyroiditis.

Branchial cleft cyst is an embryogenic anomaly of branchial apparatus usually occurring in the lateral aspect of the neck. Very few cases of intrathyroidal cystic lesion of branchial cleft have been reported in English literature so far. The patient was a 42-year-old female who presented to the Otorhinolaryngology department with anterior neck mass. The serology revealed elevated antibodies to thyroglobulin and thyroid peroxidase. Fine needle aspiration done in an outside hospital was reported as an epidermal inclusion cyst. Radiology examination of the neck was suggestive of infected fourth b

Immunological Microenvironment Alterations in Follicles of Patients With Autoimmune Thyroiditis.

Autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) is the most prevalent autoimmune endocrine disease, with a higher incidence in women than in men. Immunological abnormalities may lead to the impairment of ovarian folliculogenesis; however, whether the presence of AIT affects immunological microenvironment in follicles remains controversial. We performed a cross-sectional study including 122 patients, aged 20-40 years, who underwent IVF/ICSI treatment owing to isolated male or tube factor infertility. Patients were divided into AIT and control groups according to clinical presentation, thyroid function, and thyroi

Autoimmune thyroiditis and central serous chorioretinopathy may have a relation.

Autoimmune thyroiditis (AT) is an important cause of hypothyroidism, and central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) is an independent disease of the choroid and retina that leads to accumulation of fluid beneath the retina. While AT has been associated with multiple antibodies, CSCR is still regarded as idiopathic despite extensive research. We hypothesize a causative association between these 2 conditions on the basis of our experience of a case where both CSCR and AT presented simultaneously and depicted a parallel course. CSCR was documented with retinal imaging while AT was documented with se

Cytological, histopathological and immunological aspects of autoimmune thyroiditis: a review.

Autoimmune thyroiditis (AT) is a disease that may be associated with many other autoimmune endocrine and non-endocrine disorders. This disease is mediated by both humoral and cellular mechanisms and it is the result of combined effects of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class II genes and non-HLA genes polymorphisms. The clinical course of AT is variable and may be characterized by spontaneous remission and by irreversible thyroid insufficiency as the consequence of atrophic and fibrous transformation of the thyroid gland in other cases. In this paper, the AT's etiology and immunological mechani

Importance of sonographic paratracheal lymph node evaluationin early autoimmune thyroiditis.

BACKGROUND/AIM: To review the sonographic views of paratracheal lymph nodes (PLNs) in the diagnosis and during different stages of autoimmune thyroiditis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Features of the PLNs (left and right), thyroid sonography, and laboratory data were investigated in 126 cases. Patients were divided into three groups by using thyroid sonographic criteria in the literature (group 1: control, group 2: early-stage/indeterminate, group 3: definite thyroiditis). Indeterminate patients were followed up for 1 year and included as indeterminate/early-stage thyroiditis patients. RESULTS: Pe

Utility of Shear Wave Elastography for Diagnosing Chronic Autoimmune Thyroiditis.

The aims of this study were to evaluate the utility of shear wave elastography (SWE) using acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) for diagnosing chronic autoimmune thyroiditis (CAT) and to verify the effect of fibrotic thyroid tissue on shear wave velocity (SWV). The subjects were 229 patients with 253 normal thyroid lobes (controls) and 150 CAT lobes. The SWV for CAT (2.47 ± 0.57 m/s) was significantly higher than that for controls (1.59 ± 0.41 m/s) (P < 0.001). The area under the receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve for CAT was 0.899, and the SWV cut-off value was 1.96 m/s. The se

Association between autoimmune thyroiditis and depressive disorder in psychiatric outpatients.

Thyroid diseases are often associated with psychiatric disorders. The prevalence of autoimmune thyroiditis in the general population is estimated to be at about 5-14 %. A clinical study was conducted to evaluate the association between autoimmune thyroiditis and depression in psychiatric outpatients. Fifty-two patients with depression and nineteen patients with schizophrenia (serving as control group), attending a psychiatric outpatient unit, were included. In addition to the measurement of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free triiodothyronine, free thyroxine, antithyroid peroxidase (anti-T
