A 49-yr-old woman presented with a solid, painless, nontender nodule in the left thyroid lobe. Thyroid scintigraphy revealed a solitary "cold" area in the left lobe and a slightly decreased 24-hr radioactive iodine thyroid uptake (9%). Although there were no specific clinical or biochemical signs suggesting thyroiditis needle aspiration cytology showed the presence of a subacute thyroiditis. Approximately 1 mo later the entire thyroid gland was affected leading to a completely suppressed thyroid radioiodine uptake and elevated serum thyroid hormone concentrations. This case illustrates that in

In thirty patients with subacute thyroiditis the authors examined cardiovascular system with the use of the ECG as the most accessible and informative enough method. The clinical and ECG alterations were compared before and after the treatment with glucocorticoids. It was established that the patients with subacute thyroiditis had clinico-electrocardiographic alterations attesting to the presence of myocardiodystrophy. The alterations seen on the ECG mirrorred fully enough the impairment of the cardiovascular system. Myocardiodystrophies associated with subacute thyroiditis undergo reverse dev

A 44-year-old man was treated for subacute de Quervain's thyroiditis. This was complicated by the development of vocal cord paralysis, which persisted after recovery from the thyroiditis.

OBJECTIVE: We present three cases of thyroid dysfunction such as Hashimoto thyroiditis, Graves' disease and subacute thyroiditis which developed few weeks after resolution of acute phase of COVID -19 infection in patients with no prior thyroid disease.
METHODS: We discuss clinical presentation, diagnostic evaluation and subsequent management and follow-up in three patients.
RESULTS: All three patients tested positive for COVID-19 infection prior to diagnosis. Patient 1. A 38-year-old female developed hypothyroidism 6 weeks after COVID-19 infection, confirmed by TSH 136 mIU/L (range 0.34-5.6)

Although subacute granulomatous thyroiditis (SGT) is usually diagnose clinically, there are other thyroid conditions that must be ruled out. This task is achieved by means of fine-needle aspiration (FNA). In retrospect, the clinical and cytologic findings seen in 36 SGT cases are reassessed with a view to deciding which findings are most reliable for reaching a confident cytologic diagnosis. These are: the simultaneous presence in the same aspirate of the following cells: 1) follicular cells with intravacuolar granules and/or plump transformed follicular cells; 2) epithelioid granulomas; 3) mu

PURPOSE: Subacute thyroiditis (SAT) or de Quervain thyroiditis is a relatively frequent and self-limited condition with a triphasic clinical course. Its symptoms can mimic other thyroid, upper respiratory, and ear infections. Thyroid ultrasonography (TUS), radioactive iodine uptake (RAIU), and thyroid scintigraphy (TS) may be used for differential diagnosis. To assess and compare the diagnostic value of thyroid TUS and TS in patients on the first phase of a clinically diagnosed SAT.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-two patients (18 women and 4 men, age, 37.2 ± 9.83 years) with clinical diagnosis

Riedel's thyroiditis is a rare form of chronic thyroiditis, characterised by a fibroinflammatory process that partially destroys the thyroid and often involves surrounding tissues. The relationship of Riedel's thyroiditis to other forms of thyroiditis is not clear. A case of Riedel's thyroiditis in a 51-year-old woman presenting with symptoms of subacute thyroiditis, is reported. She was diagnosed with subacute thyroiditis based on clinical manifestation and laboratory results. She was treated with glucocorticoids for six weeks, and then followed-up for 12 months. Three years later, she visite

Lymphocytic thyroiditis with spontaneously resolving hyperthyroidism (LT-SRH) has been reported in the past years, and is referred to as “silent thyroiditis.” It is characterized by a low or decreased radioactive iodine uptake (RAIU) of thyroid in a patient with hyperthyroidism in whom initial diagnosis is generally thought to be Graves’ disease. Thirty-five patients who had hyperthyroidism or goiter with decreased RAIU have been assessed. Twenty-four (68.6%) of 35 patients had LT-SRH and the remaining patients, subacute thyroiditis (SAT). The clinical characteristics of the patients with LT-S

BACKGROUND: The cause of thyrotoxicosis can be determined through the thyroid uptake of 99mTc-pertechnetate. The goal of the study was to calculate the cut-off value of 99mTc-pertechnetate of the thyroid gland for the differential diagnosis of Graves' disease from subacute thyroiditis.
METHODS: A total of 60 patients were included in the study. Based on thyroid scan findings, 30 patients were in the Graves group and 30 of them had been diagnosed as subacute thyroiditis. Biochemical parameters, thyroid scintigraphy, and the percentage thyroidal 99mTc-pertechnetate uptake results were thoroughl

OBJECTIVE: The COVID-19 infection impacts endocrine tissues, and various thyroid disorders have been reported in affected patients. Subacute thyroiditis (SAT), a self-limited inflammatory thyroid condition, is associated with viral respiratory tract infections. Studies have suggested a link between COVID-19 and SAT. Our study expands on this by examining differences in SAT severity before and after COVID-19.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study analyzed SAT cases at an outpatient Ontario endocrinology clinic. Cases were identified as pre-Covid (December 2015 - April 2019) or post-Covid (Dece
